Last Sunday, a gunman walked into a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and opened fire on the congregation and killed more than two dozen people. The next day, President Donald Trump told reporters the mass shooting wasn’t a “guns situation,” and instead blamed it on “mental health.”Politicians have linked mental illness and mass shootings again, and again, and again. In this week’s podcast, host Jimmy Williams talks to a journalist who looked into that link … and found that it doesn’t exist. For more on mental illness and violence, check out Olga Khazan’s story at The Atlantic. 625

Larry Nassar has been moved from a federal prison in Tucson, Ariz. after his lawyer claims Nassar was assaulted in prison. The disgraced former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor was moved to a Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It's a place where inmates stay while waiting to be transferred to another prison.Nassar pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault in November 2017 after being charged with molesting seven girls, all but one of whom were gymnasts. Those sexual assaults happened at Michigan State University. In a filing by his attorneys, Nassar claims that he was abused in prison and also mentions the time when he was charged at by one of the victims' father in court."Dr. Nassar reports, that in late May he was physically attacked in federal prison within a few hours of being placed in general population," the court filing reads.  953

Liquidation sales are finally starting at hundreds of Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores around the US, as the troubled toy retailer begins the process of going out of business. Most stores will start their liquidation sales Thursday, March 22, at 10 a.m. or when doors open.Millions of parents and children are dreaming of bargains on Barbies and savings on Star Wars. But before you grab an empty shopping cart and start hunting for Black Friday-style bargains, you may want to know a few cautions. If earlier Toys R Us closing sales are any indication, among the 200 stores that started liquidating in February, you may want to bring some skepticism along with your wallet. We went to one store at the beginning of its closing sale, and shoppers said they were not impressed. So here are 9 commonly asked questions:1. How big are the discounts? In the first week, they may not be great.  We found signs saying "up to 40 percent off," but most items had much less of a discount than 40 percent?off. Ten or 20 percent off was more the norm in the first few days, and 10 percent off may not be any great deal.2. Will they discount recent sales prices?  No, as with any liquidation sale, discounts are off full list price. Because of that, our check found that Lego sets and video games like Call of Duty were no cheaper than the same items at Walmart, despite the 20 percent markdown.3. Is everything on markdown? They may be this time.  However, among stores that started liquidating in February, diapers, baby wipes, and formula were not on sale.  That may change, as stores need to clear out everything this time.4. How do you know if the item is a deal? You may want to use a price comparison app like RedLaser, where you scan the bar code of the toy you are thinking of buying, to see if it is cheaper elsewhere. Or simply look up the item on Amazon or Walmart.com.5. Will they honor gift cards? Yes, until April 15th, according to the store.  But you may want to use them in the next week, because pickings will get slimmer and slimmer as the days go on.6. What if something is broken or missing? You will be stuck. All sales are final.7. What about the Babies R Us gift registry?  That will stay open until the stores close, but parents of newborns may want to start a new registry somewhere else.  8. Is Babies R Us really closing? For now, yes. Babies R Us may stay open IF a buyer steps forward.  Rumors have Amazon buying some Babies R Us and top performing Toys R Us stores, but nothing is confirmed yet.9. When will you find the best deals?  Typically a week after the sale starts, when most items remaining drop to 50 percent off.  But you won't find the hottest toys (Playstations, Apple products, American Girl dolls, etc) after the first few days.As always, don't waste your money.________________________"Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. LAKESIDE (CNS) - A pileup on a rain-slick stretch of state Route 67 north of San Vicente Reservoir left one motorist dead Monday and another seriously injured. The chain-reaction series of crashes took place shortly before 7 a.m., when a 37-year-old Alpine woman lost control of her northbound Toyota Yaris near Foster Truck Trail in Lakeside, sending it veering sideways into the path of a southbound Chevrolet Silverado 3500 pickup, according to the California Highway Patrol. The resulting broadside collision fatally injured the driver of the subcompact car, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow said. Her name was withheld pending family notification.Following that crash, the truck, which was towing a trailer, careened onto the northbound side of the street, where a Chevrolet HHR station wagon hit it head-on.At that point, a Chevrolet 1500 pickup struck the back end of the HHR, and a Toyota Prius hit the right side of the Chevrolet 3500, Garrow said.Paramedics took the unidentified driver of the HHR to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego for treatment of major injuries. The other two motorists and a passenger in one of the vehicles suffered minor injuries in the wreck and did not require hospital care."It is believed all parties involved were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision," Garrow said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in this accident, according to the CHP. 1420

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live on Louisa Drive in La Mesa say they're living in fear every day because of a rise in crime connected to two homes they suspect are drug houses. The residents are asking the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to increase patrols in their neighborhood and do more to enforce the law at those homes."I have kids, and it's just not a safe place anymore," said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous because that person fears retaliation from neighbors. "You never know what's going to happen."According to one sergeant from the Rancho San Diego sheriff's substation, there are two homes on Louisa Drive that have people living in them with a criminal history. Right now, deputies are investigating those homes to see if any criminal activity is going on.The sergeant says there are other homes around the corner from Louisa Drive that are also under investigation.A search of crimemapping.com shows seven reported crimes in the last six months on Louisa Drive, most of them drug-related. Last January, 10News reported on one woman on the street who woke up to a pair of strange men standing in her bedroom."The concept of someone in your house while you're sleeping, it's startling," said her daughter, who also found her room ransacked.Neighbors also complain of people passed out in the street, walking through their yards at all hours of the day and night, and leaving garbage in their yards. The sheriff's department says people can file requests for extra patrol at certain hours. They try to accommodate those requests depending on staffing levels and other, more urgent calls. They also say that people who live in the neighborhood should call 911 every time they see something. 1736
