SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol arrested 58 people for alleged intoxicated driving in San Diego County during its annual Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period this year.CHP officers made the arrests between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Sunday in the agency's jurisdiction in the county, which includes all freeways, as well as roads in unincorporated areas.All available officers were to be deployed to catch drunk or drug- impaired drivers, speeders and other traffic violators during the enforcement period.Last year, 66 people were arrested for impaired driving in San Diego County over the Thanksgiving holiday.Statewide, the agency made 855 arrests for impaired driving during the enforcement period, down from 965 last year. And 44 traffic fatalities were reported across all California jurisdictions -- two of which were in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres allowed an unearned run in the first inning of a 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels Monday evening in their first exhibition game at Petco Park in 2020.Like most sporting events around the world, fans were barred from attending under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.Angels reliever Keynan Middleton took a knee and clenched his right fist above his head during the playing of the national anthem.David Fletcher scored the lone run from second base when pitcher Garrett Richards fielded a ground ball by Tommy La Stella and threw to second base in an attempt to start a double play and the ball went into center field.Fletcher singled on a 1-2 slider leading off the inning and moved to second on Mike Trout's walk.The Padres were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and did not have a runner reach third base.The Padres were outhit, 7-6. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society released a series of tips to help keep pets safe this holiday season."With the bustling holiday season upon us, San Diego Humane Society reminds pet owners to consider their pets' safety when decking the halls," an SDHS release said. "Holiday decorations, seasonal plants and festive treats can sometimes be harmful for pets."Some of the tips to keep in mind this Christmas:-- Sharing holiday goodies with animals can be dangerous. Too much fatty or rich food can lead to digestive problems. Some foods, such as onions, grapes/raisins and chocolate can be toxic-- Ask guests not to share food with pets. They may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. Prepare sealed snack bags in advance and let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates-- Christmas trees can be hazardous, particularly for climbing cats, so make sure the tree is secure and preferably in a corner-- Dangling tree ornaments can seem like great toys to cats and dogs. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria. Ribbons and bows can be a choking hazard and any packages filled with edible gifts are likely to be discovered-- A number of holiday season plants are toxic or can cause digestive upset to pets if nibbled or eaten, including amaryllis, Christmas cactus, Christmas rose, evergreens, holly, ivy, juniper, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate fell in September with multiple industries in the county showing employment increases, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.San Diego County's overall unemployment rate fell two-10ths of a percent from 3.6 percent in August to 3.4 percent in September. The September rate was also lower than the county's unemployment rate one year ago, when it sat at 3.7 percent.Total nonfarm employment increased in September compared with August by 700 jobs while agricultural employment increased by 100 jobs. Nonfarm employment now sits at 1,479,500.Government and educational and health services jobs all saw month-over-month increases in employment, largely due to the end of summer recesses and breaks according to the EDD. Local and federal government jobs increased by 5,100 in the county while educational and health services jobs increased by a total of 1,600.The leisure and hospitality industry saw the biggest decline in month-over-month job numbers, losing 2,000 jobs due to the end of summer recesses and breaks. Leisure and hospitality also saw year-over-year losses of 1,700 jobs.Yearly nonfarm employment increased 26,900 jobs, or 1.9 percent, between September 2017 and 2018,  while farm jobs increased by 100 from 2017 to 2018, a 1.1 percent growth rate.
