BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's visits to Bangladesh, Laos, New Zealand and Australia had contributed to promoting friendship, mutual trust and cooperation between China and these countries, a senior Chinese official said Thursday.Xi paid official visits to the four nations between June 14 and June 24, meeting with leaders and exchanging views on a wide range of issues, witnessing the signing of a series of bilateral cooperation agreements, addressing business forums and attending cultural activities."The visits boasted great achievements. QINGDAO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The spread of green algae has quickened as the temperature rises in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province.The area covered by green algae surged by 60 sq. km on Tuesday to 460 sq. km, according to the latest monitoring figure by the North China Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration released Wednesday.The surge is three times as fast as the average increase over the past four days, which was from 380 to 400 sq. km."It's getting hotter and hotter in Qingdao these days, and the green algae grows faster and faster," said Wang Zhigang, a local resident who swims in the sea every day.Sixteen to 20 degrees Celsius were the most favorable sea temperature range for growth of the algae, said Pang Shaojun, a researcher from the Institute of Oceanology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.The air temperature in Qingdao has risen by one degree Celsius per day on average over the past five days, reaching 27 degree Celsius Wednesday, according to the city's meteorological bureau."The sea temperature has risen to 20 degrees Celsius today, and the algae will keep growing if the temperature keeps rising," Pang said.The weather report said there would be a heavy rain in Qingdao, which would lower the air temperature to 25 degrees Celsius in the next three days, which meant the sea temperature would remain in the best range for the continued spreading of the green algae.Over 6,000 people, including cleaning workers and sea police, were deployed to clean the green algae as its continuing spread might affect the local fishery and tourism industries, said Ding Shugen from the Qingdao Committee of Municipal and Rural Construction.

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) - The first Chinese language study program for foreign diplomats concluded on Saturday at Hanban, the executive body of the Chinese Language Council International.The program, which started on February 27 with a two-hour class every Saturday, had attracted 31 diplomats from 16 countries to China. The countries included Slovenia, Benin, Poland, Cameroon, Kenya, Nepal, Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Afghanistan, and the Philippines."We have a lot to do in China and that makes us feel that it is necessary to learn Chinese. BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here Thursday that the country would push forward friendly relations with the Islamic world.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks when meeting with the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.Wu said China and all Islamic countries, as developing nations, enjoyed a long history of bilateral exchanges.China has always valued the traditional friendship with Islamic nations, Wu said, expressing appreciation for those countries' firm support on issues concerning China's core interests.China also has always supported Islamic nations on issues related to their concerns, and would work with them to increase exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, trade and culture, he noted.Wu also briefed Ihsanoglu on China's national and religious policies and on the social and economic situation of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.Ihsanoglu said friendly exchanges between the Islamic world and China not only accorded with fundamental interests of all parties, but also promoted human progress.The OIC was opposed to terrorism, separatism and extremism in any form, Ihsanoglu said, noting that the Islamic world would work with China to carry forward the traditional friendship and increase exchanges and cooperation.Besides Beijing, Ihsanoglu and his delegation would also visit the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Xinjiang.
