SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday the U.S.-China cooperation enables both countries to be more prosperous and more secure and that young people are the best ambassadors.     Obama had a dialogue with 500-strong Chinese college students Monday afternoon in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, a highlighted activity in the first stop of his four-day maiden trip to China since taking office in January.     He covered a wide range of topics, notably the outlook of Sino-U.S. cooperation and youth exchanges between the two countries, while delivering opening remarks and answering questions from the students and Chinese Internet users.     POSITIVE SINO-U.S. TIES     Obama said China is a nation that encompasses both a rich history and a belief in the promises of the future and that the same can be said of the relationship between the two countries. The Shanghai Communiqué signed 37 years ago opened the door to a new chapter of engagement between the governments and the people of the two countries, he said.     "Today we have a positive, constructive and comprehensive relationship that opens the door to partnership on the key global issues of our time: economic recovery, development of clean energy, stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the surge of climate change, and the promotion of peace and security in Asia and around the globe," Obama said.     "We have seen what is possible when we build on our mutual interests and engage on the basis of mutual respect."     The success of that engagement depends on understanding, on sustaining an open dialogue and learning about one another and from one another, he said.     "Our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulties. But the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined," Obama said, noting that the two countries "share much in common" while they are "different in certain ways."     He said one country's success need not come at the expense of another.     "That is why the United States insists we do not seek to contain China's rise; on the contrary, we welcome China as a strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations, a China that draws on the rights, strengths and creativity of individual Chinese like you," Obama said to the students.     YOUNG PEOPLE BEST AMBASSADORS     Obama announced in his speech that the United States would further expand its youth exchanges with China by increasing the number of students studying in China to 100,000.     "These exchanges mark a clear commitment to build ties among our people, as surely as you will help us determine the destiny of the 21st century," he said.     He said young people in China and U.S. are the best ambassadors and that cooperation between the countries should go beyond the governments.     "I believe strongly that cooperation must grow beyond our government. It must be rooted in our people, in the studies we share, in the business we do, in the knowledge that we gain, and even in the sports we play, and these bridges must be built by men and women just like you, and your counterparts in America," Obama said.     "I am absolutely confident that America has no better ambassadors to offer than our young people, for they just like you are filled with talent, energy and optimism about the history that is yet to be written.     "So let this be the next step in the steady pursuit of cooperation between our two nations and the world," Obama said.     "If there is one thing we can take from today's dialogue, I hope that it is a commitment to continue this dialogue going forward," Obama said in his speech. 

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday discussed bilateral relations and other issues of common concern with Papua New Guinean Prime Minister Michael Thomas Somare. Li said Papua New Guinea, as the largest developing country in the South Pacific, has great influence over regional issues.     He said China attaches great importance to bilateral ties with the Pacific island nation, which China has always regarded as a reliable friend and partner.     In recent years, Li said, the two countries have conducted frequent high-level exchanges, deepened political mutual trust, broadened exchanges and cooperation in an extensive number of sectors. Both countries, he said, should broaden their areas of cooperation to agriculture, manufacturing and high-tech, apart from energy and resources.     Somare said Papua New Guinea would like to strengthen cooperation with China in trade, investment, agriculture, infrastructure, manufacturing, education and healthcare.     He also said the preferential loans China has provided to Pacific island nations over the past three years have greatly helped the overall economic and social development of these nations.     Li arrived here on Tuesday on an official visit to Papua New Guinea, the last leg of his three-nation tour. SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday that the biggest threat to U.S. security is the terrorist groups like al-Qaida.     "I do continue to believe the greatest threat to United States security are the terrorist networks like al-Qaida," Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in Shanghai.     He said U.S. troops moved into Afghanistan because al-Qaida wasbeing hosted by the Taliban in Afghanistan but the terror group has now moved over the border of Afghanistan and has networks with other extremist groups throughout the region.     The United States now has 68,000 troops fighting in Afghanistan. Obama is going to decide on whether to grant a request by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Stanley McChrystal, to send 40,000 more troops.     "I do believe it is important for us to stabilize Afghanistan, so that the people of Afghanistan can protect themselves, and they can also be a partner in reducing the power of those extremist networks," he said.     The U.S. president admitted that defeating al-Qaida is a difficult task and is not just a military exercise.     Obama flew into Shanghai from Singapore on Sunday night to kickoff his four-day visit to China, his first trip to the Asian country since taking office in January.     Later Monday, he will fly to Beijing, where he will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and meet with other Chinese leaders.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed that more efforts should be made to improve the people's livelihood while promoting economic growth.     Li made the remarks during a recent visit to north China's Shanxi Province, where he chatted with village cadres and laid-off workers. He said it is an important duty for the Party and government to solve the basic livelihood problems of the people.     The goal of the nation's economic growth is to improve the people's well-being, he said. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called for attention on the ageing problem, noting this is a major issue that concerns "people's livelihood and the nation's lasting peace and stability."     Hui's call came several days ahead of the country's traditional "Senior Citizen's Day," or Double Ninth Festival, which falls on the ninth day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar, or Monday.     Hui, also director of China National Working Commission on Ageing, said at a recent meeting on the aging problem held in Beijing that the elderly were "valuable wealth of the Party and the country," and researchers should provide solid scientific foundation for the government to make strategies for the well-being of the ageing population.     Statistics from the commission show more than 8.3 percent of the 1.3-billion Chinese population are above 65, and in most cities, more than 50 percent of the elderly people live without the company of their children.     Hui said efforts should be made to deal with new conditions concerning ageing, such as unbalanced distribution of the aged between urban and rural areas.
