SYDNEY, Australia – Koalas are on track to become extinct in New South Wales before 2050, according to a report from the Australian state’s parliament.A committee released the report Tuesday after a year-long inquiry and it’s asking the government to take immediate action to save the nation’s most loved animal.A government estimate showed that there are about 36,000 koalas in the state, but the committee says that estimate is outdated and unreliable. The report says the loss in koalas is partly a result of the 2019-2020 bushfires that devastated the country. The committee says at least 5,000 koalas were lost in the fires over the past year, potentially more.“An estimated 24% of koala habitat on public land has been severely impacted across the state, but in some parts, there has been a devastating loss of up to 81%,” the report says of the wildfire devestation. However, the committee says the most serious threat to koalas is habitat loss.“The ongoing destruction of koala habitat through the clearing of land for agriculture, development, mining and forestry has severely impacted most koala populations in the state over many decades,” wrote committee chair Cate Faehrmann. “The committee found that this fragmentation and loss of habitat poses the most serious threat to koala populations and made a number of key recommendations that stronger action must be taken by government to protect and restore koala habitat on both public and private land.”The committee also found that climate change is having a severe impact on koalas, not only by affecting the quality of their food and habitat, but also by compounding the severity and threats of other impacts, such as drought and bushfires.Along with its findings, the committee provided a long list of recommendations for the government to implement in order to save the state’s koalas. Those included prioritizing the protection of koala habitat corridors, improving monitoring methods and increased funding. One recommendation encourages the government to look into the establishment of a Great Koala National Park on New South Wales’ North Coast. 2120

TAMPA, Fla. -- As parents across the country grow more concerned every morning when they send their kids to school, more and more are turning to bulletproof backpacks.“After Sandy Hook, people couldn’t wrap their minds around a bulletproof backpack but now they think it’s something that they need," said Yasir Sheikh, the president of Guard Dog Security. The Sandy Hook shooting inspired Sheikh to create a backpack out of bulletproof materials. It doesn’t seem like much. The backpack has just a thin layer of kevlar, but it is certified to withstand handgun rounds.“Ideally, we think with the way things are going this should become mandatory, common for all students," said Skeikh. "It’s a sad reality, it’s become a new normal."Others feel the same. Just three days after the deadly school shooting in South Florida his company saw a 150 percent increase in the number of bags they shipped. But do they actually work?Ryan Hart is a certified firearm instructor for defense training company Ground Ready International Training, or G.R.I.T Ready. He also teaches active shooter survival courses.Hart put a barrel with sand behind the backpack to simulate a body and took aim with his Glock 19.“The rounds definitely penetrated the front of the bag here," said Hart inspecting the shot-up bag, "But if we flip it over there’s no penetration past the armor itself."Next up: the AR-15.In the last decade, this style of gun has been used in six of the 10 deadliest mass shootings throughout the country, including the Parkland school shooting.“It went right through the soft armor," Hart said after spraying the backpack with bullets from the AR-15.It's what Hart expected, as the Guard Dog Security backpack is not certified to withstand assault-style weapons. To stop bullets from a similar weapon, the backpack would need to be equipped with steel plates like those installed in military vests. However, that would make the backpack fairly heavy to carry.“I would recommend (the backpack), yes," Hart said. "While it did not stop a direct shot from an assault rifle it can still stop bullet fragments, ricochets, glass flying through the air.”Then we posed this question to Skeikh: "What do you think it says about our society that we are resorting to items like this?"The backpacks cost between 0-200. Fifty percent of the proceeds from sales of the backpacks right now will go to the victim's families of the Parkland shooting.Guard Dog Security is also looking into possibly making backpack, that would have the ability to stop assault-style weapons. 2664

TAMPA — Wearing masks is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 — and health experts say everyone should continue to care for their face coverings to ensure protection when in public. After wearing a mask for a few months, doctors say there are some clear, tell-tale signs that it is no longer working correctly."When the edges start to fray or if the pieces where they connect start to fall apart, or if they are visibly soiled, then you should really get a new mask," said Dr. Tracey Taylor, the associate dean of USF College of Nursing.Experts also say that if a mask no longer fits over the nose or doesn't have a close fit around the face or chin, it's time to get a new one."It's super important to make sure your mask is fitting appropriately, that it's not visibly soiled, that the edges aren't frayed and that the attachments to the ear loops or tie backs — whatever type you're wearing — is appropriately attached," Taylor said. For those who own cloth masks, experts say owners need to remember to wash them. Experts say washing cloth mask with detergent or soap is best and that they don't need to be washed with super hot water. Those who own cloth masks with filters should remove the filter and clean it separately. However, there's another option."You can put them in a paper bag and seal it up for a couple of days. That'll inactivate any virus that's on it," said Dr. Marissa Levine, a professor of public health practice at USF.After several months, experts say they have more information about which masks are effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.Cloth masks are most effective when they have at least three layers of material or a spot to add a filter. They're typically the easiest for the general public to use because they're reusable, and doctors say the research shows they mostly prevent the spread of the virus.Although any face covering is better than none, some aren't as effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.Experts say bandanas are very thin and don't offer the same type of protection as a mask.Doctors say any mask with a valve on it is completely ineffective because the valve allows virus-carrying particles to leak out.Popular neck gaiters that wearers can easily pull up and down don't provide a lot of protection for the wearer or those around them."If you find yourself with a single layer, you could use something like a paper towel inside there to add an extra layer if you need to," Levine said.Experts advise keeping two masks on hand in case one gets lost or breaks."There's no one thing that we do that will protect us to the highest level. It's a series of things," Levine said. This story was originally published by Larissa Scott on WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 2755

State of Nevada “thinks” that they can send out illegal vote by mail ballots, creating a great Voter Fraud scenario for the State and the U.S. They can’t! If they do, “I think” I can hold up funds to the State. Sorry, but you must not cheat in elections. @RussVought45 @USTreasury— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 20, 2020 337
