BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah -- The Utah community is mourning the loss of one of its own, a U.S. Air Force pilot from the state who died during a routine training mission off the northern coast of England.1st Lt. Kenneth “Kage” Allen grew up in Box Elder County, but recently moved overseas where he was serving with the 48th Fighter Wing based in the U.K.He had been there for a little over three months when his plane crashed during the training mission.“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our airman and mourn with his family and his fellow reapers in the 493rd Fighter Squadron,” said Col. Will Marshall, Commander of the 48th Fighter Wing.Marshall said Allen was the assistant chief of weapons and tactics for the 493rd Fighter Squadron.On Monday morning, Allen was flying a F-15C Eagle at about 9:40 a.m. when the aircraft crashed into the North Sea.“The outpouring of love and respect from our communities has been a ray of light in this time of darkness,” said Marshall.Allen's death comes just one day after his 27th birthday, and just one week after he recorded himself singing “Time in a Bottle” for his new bride.“Oh my sweetheart Kage,” wrote Hannah Allen on Facebook. “I think I could fill an ocean with the tears I’ve cried today.”The couple were married on Feb. 20, right before Allen joined the 48th Fighter Wing.Family members wrote on Facebook that Lt. Allen was waiting for his wife to join him in England once COVID-19 restrictions allowed.“I never knew a heart could shatter like this,” Hannah wrote. “But I’ve promised you today that the rest of my life will be a tribute to you.”In a tweet, Gov. Gary Herbert paid tribute to Lt. Allen, saying: “He was a Utahn dedicated to making a difference in the world, and kept his virtue through both triumph and disaster.” 1792
Billowing smoke from wildfires on the West Coast is reaching cities thousands of miles away, and those who live closer to the fires are battling hazardous air for weeks now.“We’ve never seen anything like this. Waking up to orange light pouring in your room is such an eerie feeling,” said Danica Gragg. “We’ve never seen anything like it.”As wildfires scorch millions of acres, blue skies are transformed into rust, making earth appear more like Mars.We haven’t even been able to see the sun for a couple weeks,” said Gragg.Located east of San Francisco, unpredictable fires have dictated her family's lives for weeks now. First, it was the fear of evacuating.“There were three different fires at the time when this started: one above us, one below us, one to the right.”Ultimately spared from the flames, her family would still feel the wrath of what’s left in their wake.“My dad is a disabled veteran with COPD,” she said.Suffering from a chronic lung disease, it was the first time the Vietnam veteran found himself completely unable to breathe while taking out the trash one evening.“The ambulance came and of course with COVID, I think that was the first time I really understood what people were going through when you have to see a loved one taken away in an ambulance and you can’t go with them. You don’t know when you’ll see them again,” Gragg said.He was hospitalized for six days.Gragg said her family got humidifiers and also downloaded apps to check air quality. The apps reveal that West Coast cities are suffering from some of the worst air in the world, with San Francisco, Portland and Seattle ranking in the top five.“We can see the atmosphere in totally new ways now, and I have never personally seen so much smoke across the west as I did last week,” said Geoff Cornish, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.Satellite images show choking smoke blanketing the west and moving across the U.S. and Pacific Ocean.“Most of the smoke, as it gets carried east of northern plains, is elevated, and that will be high in the atmosphere,” said Cornish. “Now, somebody who might be really susceptible to respiratory illnesses might sense some of that.”What makes wildfire smoke so toxic is fine particulate matter so small it can get deep into the lungs and bloodstream. It's a public health threat that grows with each destructive wildfire season.“Climate change is not something that should be debatable anymore,” Gragg said. “We can see it. We need to listen to the scientists. They told us this was coming.”And now, her family waits to see how many more days will be dictated by historic fires raging around them. 2631
Bank of America announced on Tuesday that they plan to stop lending money to companies that make assault-style guns used for non-military purposes.During an interview on Bloomberg television, Bank of America Vice Chairman Anne Finucane said, “It’s not our intent to underwrite or finance military-style firearms on a go-forth basis.”According to Finucane, the firm has had “intense conversations over the last few months” with those kinds of gun manufacturers to let them know "it's our intention not to finance these military-style firearms for civilian use."According to CNBC, the bank is a lender to Vista Outdoor, Remington and Sturm Ruger.The move comes as part of a national movement addressing gun control that was put into motion after a gunman opened fire on a Florida high school killing 17 people. BLACKSTONE, Va. — The Jones family has had to adapt to survive and maintain their longstanding farm in Blackstone, Virginia, especially amid the pandemic.“This is a relationship that you’ve been in all your life and to try and figure out how to live without it is just, I mean you hear stories about people who sold the farm and didn’t get off their sofa for the next few years. It’s just soul crushing,” said TR Jones.The farm has been in Jones’ family for 270 years. That’s 270 years of his family’s blood, sweat and tears in the soil. It’s not just his job, it’s his family legacy“Nobody wants to be the one to lose the farm,” said Jones.Farming has never been an easy business and it certainly hasn’t the last few years. The Jones family has had to adapt. It started growing tobacco in the 1700s and then switched to dairy in the 1950s.That means milking over 200 cows at 3 a.m. and then again in the afternoon.“We milk them in five and five sections and in the entire parlor, we can actually milk 20 cows at a time,” said Brittany Jones.A little over a year ago, they decided to bet on themselves again and become a creamery, processing their own milk and making a little ice cream. That’s when Richlands Creamery was born.TR runs the farm with his wife Brittany and his dad, while his sister runs the creamery. But to build the creamery, they had to mortgage the family’s legacy for their future.“We basically put up that whole 270 years against that loan, saying we believe this is going to work,” said Jones.That was before the pandemic. The creamery has been treading water, but they’ve been hit hard just like everyone.“We were kind of getting revved up. We had just gotten ourselves into some Food Lions. All our retail stores, that wholesale purchase from us, were lined up to start buying ice cream, our restaurants were lined up to buy milk and cream, coffee shops, all those things. Then COVID started, which oddly enough was not in any of those feasibility studies,” said Jones.The Jones family is in a tough situation, a situation a lot of families in America are in. Everything they have in this world is threatened by the pandemic.“It’s been difficult because we lost those wholesale accounts to those coffee shops, restaurants, donut shops, ice cream shops that should have all been open this past summer, and they weren’t,” said Jones.But just like millions of Americans, they might be down, but don’t count the Jones family out.“To say that I can just move on to the next job, walk away, do something else, you don’t just walk away from that and say, didn't work out, on to the next job," said Jones.The Jones family is going to keep doing what they've been doing for almost 300 years and for the last year, keep working hard, taking care of their cows and making milk and ice cream for their community.They're going to keep fighting, like so many other American farmers.“You have this group of people who should be run through the mud, but when you sit down and talk to them, they’re so happy to talk to you, they’re so optimistic that tomorrow is going to bring better things and that the journey behind is essentially forged them for the road ahead. And I don’t know that there’s a group of people like that anywhere else in the world,” said Jones. 3281
BELLEVILLE, Mich. — A Good Samaritan was placed in a bad situation on a metro Detroit highway. Now his close call is going viral on social media while also alerting motorists to beware and trust your instincts. It was around 10 p.m. on Sunday when John Hadyniak of Belleville, Michigan was heading home driving down I-94. When he got near Belleville road, he saw a woman on the side of the road changing a flat tire. Hadyniak's first thought was to stop and give her a hand, then his red flag radar lit up like the Fourth of July. The trunk on the car was closed, said Hadyniak, who is also a mechanic, and he noticed there was no plate on the trunk of the car. "I noticed that there was no jack and she had a tire iron in her hand," Hadyniak said. "Things didn't add up. It was just a bad feeling."He listened to that gut feeling and pulled out a flashlight and shined it on the woman. "I put the flashlight on her when I got out of the car," he said. "And about 15 feet off the side of the road there was a guy laying in the grass. I hit him with the light. He got up and jumped in the car and took off down I-94"In that moment, Hadyniak thought of what could have transpired. Those "what ifs" are still swirling around in his head. "Worse case scenario, I could have got bopped in the head with that, laid dead on the side of the expressway," he said. "(They could have) robbed me, stole my car – everything. If I wouldn't have seen him, it would have been bad news."Hadyniak posted the phonies foiled plan on Facebook with a warning to folks to be smart and beware.
