SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite criticism, a spokesperson for the California Republican Party told ABC 10News on Tuesday that the party will continue placing unofficial ballot drop boxes around communities.They've popped up in Orange, Los Angeles, and Fresno counties, but so far none have been reported in San Diego. Several have been labeled "official", as confirmed by CA GOP spokesperson Hector Barajas. “We could've had better wording on the ballot boxes and so we changed some of the wording around already on the ballot boxes but the important thing to remember is that these ballot boxes are inside our campaign headquarters or inside of businesses or other organizations. It's not as though they're outside in front of a mailbox or outside a library or a secondhand store or another place of business,” he told ABC 10News.On Monday, California's Secretary of State and the State Attorney General sent a cease and desist to the GOP, calling the boxes illegal. Some argue that the boxes are deceptive and could lead to tampering. “These boxes are not the same as county election drop boxes that are required to meet state security standards,” said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.Barajas told ABC 10News, “What is happening right now is the Secretary of State -- with this cease and desist -- is basically looking to engage in voter suppression [by] eliminating more options for individuals to be able to drop off their ballot.”Barajas said that "ballot harvesting" is a practice that allows a third party to collect voters' completed ballots and was legalized four years ago in a bill authored by San Diego Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.A tweet Tuesday from one of Gonzalez’s accounts reads, "Apparently, Republicans in our legislature think that when I wrote that a voter could designate a 'person' to turn in their ballot, they thought I meant a fraudulently labeled box. I'm terribly sorry. I will define person next time.”When asked how many boxes the GOP has placed around the state, Barajas responded, “We're not giving an exact number but we will say that we've got them statewide and with the amount of press we've gotten on this we're considering maybe even doubling or tripling our efforts.”The San Diego County Registrar of Voters reports it has already received 175,000 completed ballots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Del Mar may be the county's smallest city, but it has no shortage of workers commuting in every day to serve its residents and tourists.They're coming from as far away as Oceanside, La mesa, and Rancho Penasquitos. It's because the city - with a median home price of .7 million - has no affordable housing. "If they could live here and walk to work we'd get all kinds of benefits from that," said Del Mar Mayor Dwight Worden. To help make that happen, Del Mar may start charging developers of condos and condo conversions fees by the square foot. That could add to more than a hundred thousand dollars per project for affordable housing. Right now developers of those projects pay a flat fee of ,500, which hasn't been updated since 2007.The city council is considering a per square foot charge for existing construction and per square foot for new construction.The money would either go to expanding Del Mar's rent subsidy program, which currently assists five families in the city.Worden, however, said he prefers physical units because they are there forever. Del Mar currently has no affordable housing units, but the state requires it to have about 70. Worden said two currently proposed developments would include units, but he also would like the city to use the extra money to apply for federal and state grants.He also floated the idea of Del Mar buying an apartment building, converting them to condos, selling a portion of them to recoup its investment, and keeping some for low-income workers. 1571

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - HazMat teams responded to a fire station in North Park after a suspicious package was found outside the station, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official.Fire crews found the package by Station 14's front door around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when they returned from a call.Fire officials told 10News the package was a taped-up cardboard box with writing on it that made it appear dangerous. Some of the words were misspelled.The hazmat and bomb personnel set up a perimeter around the station, blocking off 32nd Street and Lincoln Avenue by about a block in each direction.The bomb squad x-rayed the package, determined that it was not dangerous, and reopened the street around 5:45 p.m.The package was filled with aluminum flux and trash, according to a tweet from San Diego Fire-Rescue.At about 3p on Sunday someone left this box at SDFD North Park station on 32nd St. The bomb team was called to ID the contents - aluminum flux and some trash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone video of a Pacific Beach man's search and rescue of his blind pet chameleon plays out like the perfect Hollywood action sequence.Vince Kay Vera says his pet chameleon, "Pete," is temporarily blind due to an infection. "He doesn't normally act like this.
