Which means 2020, the year that seems to be affected by everything, will see more cases. The CDC says the type of virus that causes AFM starts with a basic fever. Which then may go away and come back.“Most parents don’t necessarily think much about a fever and the sniffles- if parents do see limb weakness so their child complaining of pain maybe headache or back pain and weakness in one or more limbs that is a sign they need to seek medical care immediately,” Routh said.Routh says AFM progresses rapidly by attacking the gray matter of the spinal cord. Paralysis can set in in a matter of hours or days.“I remember one mother telling me that her child laid limply on her chest, couldn’t move. Those are signs that they really need to call their pediatrician or go the ER and get evaluated,” Routh said.As it's a relatively new syndrome, there's a lot we don't know. There's no lab test to diagnose it and there's no vaccine. 90% of the cases are in children under the age of 18 with the average age being 5. Some recover, some have long term complications like Kinley, who is now 11 and still on a ventilator. She's regained use of her right leg and foot and uses it for school work and painting.“I’ve definitely seen how this condition can affect children and their families, not just from a physical standpoint but from an emotional standpoint disrupting the lives of families,” Routh said.The CDC is now trying to track patients and outcomes, tracking the recovery of those who have been diagnosed and researching those who may be at risk. They do know that it seems to affect kids in late August and early September, and prevention is similar to what you'd do for other viruses like COVID-19. The CDC is considering changing its quarantine guidelines for those who have been in close contact with someone who is infected with the coronavirus.Currently, those who have been in close contact with someone infected with the virus would be advised to quarantine for 14 days. Possible new guidance would shorten the quarantine period to 10 days. At the end of the 10-day period, a test would be need to end quarantine.In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Adm. Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary for health at Health and Human Services, explains why a 10-day quarantine might be more effective at getting more compliance with the guidance."People are much more likely to listen to a 10-day quarantine than they are a 14-day quarantine,” Giroir said. “If we can shorten it safely with most risk because we have a quarantine plus a test, we have a lot of tests available now, that might improve our public health responses.”Giroir stressed that final guidelines have not been approved, and the current guidance still calls for a 14-day quarantine.“It's not an announcement that is happening but we are reviewing it and the CDC team is modeling it and looking at data every day,” Giroir said.“And it may change or it may not. The general manager at Grayton Road Tavern received a strange phone call from her manager on duty just before 9 p.m. local time Monday.Jennifer Natale said she was called when her employees found out a woman had crawled up through a ceiling tile in the women's bathroom and hadn't come out."It was honestly just one of those phone calls you don't really ever think you're going to get," Natale said. "I asked her to put me on FaceTime, she did that and it was true. There was a person who crawled up into the ceiling."The bar staff called police, and the woman was found in the ceiling over the kitchen.In surveillance video shown in the media player above, the woman is seen walking into the bathroom, and sometime later a ceiling tile falls in the hallway."It was a really hot day. I can't even imagine how hot it was for that two-hour period," Natale said.Monday was a record-breaking day reaching 93 degrees in the Cleveland area.Police told Natale the woman had pulled similar stunts in the past. The bar is known for its Queen of Hearts game, which left one lucky winner with .5 million in March.
