JASPER, Tenn. — The mountains of southeastern Tennessee soar into the sky as the Tennessee River winds through valleys. Yet, the beautiful landscape isn't just the site of a natural divide — it is the site of a digital one as well."The issue came when we had to go total shutdown, total remote," said Allen Pratt, who heads up the National Rural Education Association, representing rural school districts in all 50 states. He said when the pandemic forced students into remote learning, many in rural areas couldn't get on the internet."I think you have to look at it from the sense of, we have to treat this just like the electric power grid, where every home has electricity — it needs to be the same way with connectivity," Pratt said. The Pew Research Center found that more than a quarter of all Americans — 27% — don't have high-speed internet access at home. In terms of students, 9 million schoolchildren are not able to do remote learning at home, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. In Marion County, Tennessee, about 30% of the county's 4,000 students did not have internet access when the pandemic began. Director of Schools Mark Griffith said they relied on hand-delivering paper lesson packets."We would actually take some food and some of the packets out to the rural areas daily," Griffith said.In order to address the problem, the district set up several mobile hotspots throughout the county, including in the parking lots of some of their schools and the school district office. The hotspots seemed to help, as it reduced the number of students without internet access to below 20%.Yet, the district knows it can't reach everyone. This fall, instead of relying solely on internet access, teachers will save recordings of class lessons onto flash drives and hand them out to students who don't have internet access."They will be able to pick up that recording," Griffith said. "They will be a week behind, but we understand that."It's a short-term solution to a long-term problem that Allen Pratt believes will need major funding from federal and state governments to fix."Our school systems need to help, obviously, and be a part of it, but they shouldn't be in the business of providing broadband," Pratt said. "They should be in the business of educating students. 2313

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A famous architectural gem known as the Razor House is for sale for ,000,000 in La Jolla. The home, which is named for Razor Point, was designed by leading architect Wallace E. Cunningham. Located in La Jolla Farms near the Torrey Pines Golf Course, the home sits on some 12,000 square feet of cliff-top land.PHOTOS: Tour the 'Razor House' in La Jolla“Few residences are so groundbreaking in design that they need a name to convey their architectural significance. The Razor House is one of these rare and celebrated masterpieces which has a name that pays homage to a stunning yet treacherous landscape where majestic cliffs meet the infinity of the ocean,” said Laleh Monshizadeh. “When The Razor House was completed in 2007, the property was widely regarded as an architectural marvel. The cinematic nature of its design has made it a highly sought-after filming location and has already been featured in TV commercials for Calvin Klein and Visa Black Card.”Designed with concrete, stainless steel and glass, the space takes advantage of panoramic ocean views.“Walled in by sheets of glass, the house is so transparent that you feel as if you are suspended in air, completely surrounded by water,” said Niloo Monshizadeh. “It takes a daring visionary to take a modestly sized, steep oceanfront lot that had been previously declared ‘unbuildable’ and create a masterpiece nestled sensitively into the hillside. Following the Wrightian tradition of organic architecture, Wallace E. Cunningham drew inspiration from the challenging terrain, imagining a dynamic residence spread across the land that takes advantage of its position amid deep canyon, golden sandstone and jagged bluff leading into vast views of the Pacific Ocean.”The home is listed by Laleh and Niloo Monshizadeh of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in La Jolla.9826 La Jolla Farms Rd.Bedrooms: 4Baths: 4Partial baths: 2Square feet: 10,653 in main house, 1,301 in guest house 1986

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi lawmakers are taking steps to erase the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag. The symbol has come under criticism amid nationwide protests against racial injustice. The House voted Saturday to file a bill to remove the symbol that many see as racist. A committee would design a new flag including the words “In God We Trust.” Voters would decide in November whether to endorse that design. Mississippi has used the same flag for more than 125 years. Religious, education, sports and business leaders are pushing legislators to remove the Confederate symbol. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves said Saturday that he will sign a bill to change the flag. 695

KEARNY, N.J. — An uninvited guest made its way into several New Jersey suburbs, creating quite a stir inside normally quiet areas.Police believe a 300-pound bear is roaming around communities and was most recently seen in North Arlington. It was likely the same bear that was spotted in Kearny. It's not clear how a black bear ended up in the middle of densely populated areas like Kearny — and Harrison, beforehand — but some New Jersey residents needed a second to get their bearings after spotting the furry animal."I haven't seen any here, this is the first time. Surprised me. Especially close to my house," said Ruben Martinez. He barely noticed that it had climbed up a tree in his own backyard around 1 p.m. Monday. That was until he heard some commotion outside."When I went outside, that's when I found out. I saw police in my driveway, that's how I found out. Plus, I see a lot of people outside," Martinez said.Harrison police said the bear was first spotted on Saturday at the local Walmart and by Red Bull Arena. Officers snapped a picture with their bare hands and posted it on social media, warning people to be on alert."We did get a call from the town of Kearny that there was a bear was in the neighborhood and police were looking for it,” said Herbert Ginbel, a local resident.Police asked residents to bear with them as they tried to capture the animal. They've requested an animal control unit and notified the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife."I just hope everything will work out all right, and as a deacon I pray that the bear will be ok, and it can be returned to the habitat that I belongs,” Ginbel said. It's estimated the bear weighs 300 pounds. Ironically today marked the beginning of bear hunting season in New Jersey, though the governor said 2020 would mark the end of bear hunting under his administration. This story originally reported by Cristian Benavides and Rebecca Solomon on pix11.com. 1941
