EAST FREEHOLD, N.J. — A 3.1 magnitude earthquake was detected Wednesday morning in the Central New Jersey town of Freehold, according to the United States Geological Survey.The USGS detected the quake around 2 a.m. while the National Weather Service referred to the quake as a "small tremor" despite that it was felt in much of Central Jersey.The depth of the quake was reported as about 3.1 miles. There are no reports yet of any damage or injuries due to the earthquake.Hundreds of reports were coming in from as far as Philadelphia and Long Island, New York on the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map.Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said that about 125 non-emergency and 911 calls came in from residents who reported feeling and hearing the quake.Twitter user @BWf34, in Freehold, said it "felt like an explosion, then shaking. No obvious damage to house. Woke up the entire family."Twitter user @arorasa, in East Windsor, said the "whole house shook. (KGTV) - Grandparents and their grandson escaped a house fire in El Cajon Wednesday night but they lost their family cat.The fire broke out in the back room of a home on Gladys St. at 11 p.m.Despite the danger, the grandson ran back into the home to find the cat. He suffered smoke inhalation and was treated by paramedics.Another grandson told 10News his grandparents are devastated because they had lived at the home. He started a GoFundMe account to help them recover.The fire was knocked down in 15 minutes. (KGTV) - A man and a woman were taken into custody following a carjacking and a string of robberies targeting San Diego convenient stores early Tuesday morning.The crime spree started around 1 a.m. when the couple allegedly carjacked a victim in El Cajon.Minutes later, the couple drove to a 7-Eleven store near the intersection of San Carlos Drive and Bisby Lake Avenue, police said.A male suspect armed with a handgun walked into the store while the clerk was preparing the register for the day, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.CRIME NEWS: Man hospitalized following deputy-involved shooting in Lemon GroveThe armed man reached over the counter and took money out the register, then the suspect ran out of the store. (KGTV) - A possible vehicle break-in led to a deadly shooting in the East County early Sunday.El Cajon Police received a report of shots fired just after 1 a.m. near West Chase Avenue in El Cajon. Police said a homeowner was woken up by the sound of his dogs barking in the 1100 block of Mona Place and looked outside to see someone trying to break into his vehicle.The homeowner retrieved his handgun and went outside to confront the 32-year-old suspect, police said.A confrontation between the two occurred and the homeowner shot at the suspect multiple times, police said, striking him at least once.The suspect then took off in his own vehicle and crashed into the driveway of a nearby home in the 1000 block of West Chase Ave. Officers arrived to find him dead of a gunshot wound.Police have not released the identity of the homeowner or suspect. The homeowner is cooperating with officers. It's not yet clear if that person will face any criminal charges as a result of the shooting. 1054
