After decades of silence, one of perhaps hundreds of sexual misconduct victims of an Ohio State University team doctor is speaking out for the first time, hoping his story serves as a lesson. The numbers are staggering: nearly 50 instances of rape, almost 1,500 cases of fondling. Those new numbers detail how widespread sexual abuse was at the hands of an Ohio State University's Dr. Richard Strauss. Many of the accusers are former OSU athletes. One of those shared the story he kept hidden for decades. For 14 years, he's been a trusted name in Grand Rapids, Michigan. But for years, Mike Avery, 607

A manhunt is underway for a University of Connecticut senior suspected of killing two men last Friday. Law enforcement agencies in multiple states are searching for the suspect, 23-year-old Peter Manfredonia.Manfredonia is accused of killing 62-year-old Ted DeMers and 23-year-old Nicholas Eisele before forcing Eisele’s girlfriend into her vehicle and fleeing the state with her. The 23-year-old girlfriend was located Sunday at a rest stop near Paterson, New Jersey, with her 2016 Volkswagen Jetta and was not hurt, according to police.Meanwhile, Pennsylvania State Police say Manfredonia was dropped off by an Uber in front of a Walmart in East Stroudsburg before walking behind the store and onto a set of train tracks on Sunday. A surveillance photo shared by authorities appears to show Manfredonia walking on the tracks in a white t-shirt and dark colored shorts, carrying a large duffel bag. Police believe the bag is full of guns that the suspect stole from a home invasion in Connecticut.??UPDATE??SUSPECT was last seen yesterday (Sunday) afternoon in East Stroudsburg, Monroe County, PA. Across the country, 86 percent of police departments are dealing with an officer shortage. Half of those departments report the shortage has gotten worse in the last five years.“I grew up in a police family,” said Captain Nick Augustine with the Montgomery County Police Department. “I always saw the police car in the drive way, and it was always a career I wanted to go towards.”Augustine followed his father’s footsteps, put on a badge, and joined the force in 2001. He joined at a time when it was common to have legacy officers, meaning officers who were second or third generation police. However, with the declining number of people joining police departments, that has changed. “We may have one or two applicants who come from the law enforcement family that are actually applying to be a police officer,” said Augustine. As a captain in the Montgomery County Police Department, heading up the personnel division,Augustine has seen the shortage firsthand. The shortage in both legacy officers and the shortage in the number of people join the force altogether. The shortage at MCPD began in 2014. In August of that year, MCPD had 1,400 applicants for that academy class. The next class had only 600 applicants, which was a 58 percent reduction.“That was alarming,” said Augustine. “We were still able to fill our class at that point, but over the last couple of session, that has dropped where we haven’t been able to fill classes.”Any of the departments around the country, like Seattle and Miami, are dealing with shortages at a similar rate as MCPD. Adding to that, many departments are also seeing a rise in the number of officers resigning within the first five years on the job.“Looking at reasons why our numbers are dropping, the economy right now is very strong with low unemployment numbers,” explained Augustine. “Veterans--which we tend to have apply to be law enforcement officers--are now being offered private contracting jobs, which is paying higher than a government job.”Surveys from multiple police research organizations show recent controversial events and public perception of police officers have also played a role in the shortage. To combat this, departments have increased recruitment efforts. MCPD has place billboards outside their county and streamlined the police officer application process.“This is a rewarding career,” Augustine said. “You never know how many people you affect in the community by your actions.” 2463

A woman in South Florida called 911 after a bullet came through her car's windshield -- but dispatchers didn't send help right away. Police say they mishandled the call while their supervisor was streaming a Netflix movie.Guadalupe Herrera was driving near a gas station in Coral Springs on June 9 when what she thought was an object that might be a bullet almost hit her head. She called 911 three times seeking help, but officers were not dispatched until 34 minutes after the first call, according to a Coral Springs police internal investigation, which was first reported by the 595
