Due to the wildfires raging in Northern California, San Francisco, Stockton and Sacramento were the world's three "most polluted cities" on Friday morning, according to Berkeley Earth, a nonprofit that aggregates data from air-quality monitoring sites.PurpleAir, which has a network of sensors around the world, also showed that California had worse air than traditional smog hotspots in India and China.CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller confirmed that "no region on Earth had as many air quality stations in the highest ranges" of particulate matter, or PM, the toxic mixture of particles and droplets that worsens after wildfires. Those values, he said, "stretched for hundreds of miles over Northern and Central California, from the mountains to the valleys and the coast."Schools, colleges and public transit have closed as smoke from the Camp Fire descends on the region."It appears to be the worst air quality ever experienced in San Francisco," said Dan Jaffe, a professor of environmental chemistry at the University of Washington. He called the situation "an air quality emergency," and experts said the smoke could undo decades of progress on pollution."We have made tremendous efforts and investment to clean up our air with considerable benefits for public health," said Dr. Daniel Jacob, a professor of atmospheric chemistry and environmental engineering at Harvard University. "But now it's like we're getting stabbed in the back with those wildfires." 1472

Dog owners from across the country boarded their dogs at Young Gunz Kennel so they could be trained to be hunting dogs. But now, owners are wondering how their pups were left for dead in kennels. After dropping off her puppy "Duke" at Young Gunz?Kennel in early April, Dani Allison of Spencer, Iowa, heard yesterday that Duke was one of three dogs found dead at the facility and the owner, Dustin Young, was nowhere to be seen. "I think that he let our dog die and didn't have the courtesy to call us or tell us or do anything but put him in a black bag," says Allison. Pottawatamie County Animal Control seized the dogs that were still living yesterday and took some to the Council Bluffs Humane Society and others to a makeshift shelter in Oakland where their owners could pick them up. "All of them were pretty shaken of course at the time because none of them had water in probably two days. So we did give them water and food of course but there was a lot of diarrhea and things like that that you have to deal with," says Matt Wyant, who oversees animal control in Pottawattamie County.  1134

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — El Cajon City Council voted Friday not to make any changes in how the city enforces the county's coronavirus public health orders.Thursday, Mayor Bill Wells called for the special meeting to discuss stopping El Cajon Police from enforcing public health measures around facial coverings and distancing.City Council leaders said the city would continue enforcing the rules as they have on a case-by-case basis, according to the mayor. So while police won't respond to complaints like who is or is not wearing a mask or whether a restaurant has too many people inside, they will focus on more egregious violations, like large parties or businesses being fully opened.RELATED: El Cajon Mayor calls for police to stop enforcing county COVID-19 measuresHowever, after California implemented new guidance on Friday that allows San Diego County to reopen several businesses indoors with modifications starting Monday, Wells said no major action by the city was needed.Thursday, Wells told ABC 10News that he understands that the county and state may continue to hand out fines or criminal charges on businesses despite the stance, but the mental health issues surrounding restrictions are too much."I don't enjoy taking a stand like this, this isn't going to be any fun. But I think my responsibility to the people are more important than my comfort," Wells, a mental health professional, said Thursday. "I want to emphasize I'm not telling people not to wear masks. I'm not telling people not to social distance. And I think people who are elderly with co-morbidities should stay in their homes and not socialize with people."According to data from the county on Friday, El Cajon has reported 1,828 coronavirus cases, or 4.9% of the county's total cases. 1781

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - As 10News explores Life in El Cajon, we’re examining the rich history of a city that started with “gold in them thar hills.” The name means “the box” or drawer in Spanish, referring to the way the valley is boxed in by the mountains in East County. A structure that survived El Cajon’s long history is the Knox Hotel, which opened in 1876 to house people drawn to Julian during the Gold Rush. “The people who came here were not poor, they came and they could build lovely houses and buildings like this,” said Eldonna Lay, curator of the Knox House Museum. Complete Coverage: Life in El CajonThe location was halfway between Old Town and Julian, a bend in the road that came to be known as “Knox’s Corners.” It would later grow into El Cajon. In 1889, the railroad arrived and the town began to thrive. El Cajon was incorporated in 1912, bringing advancements like street lights and cement sidewalks. El Cajon’s main attractions were citrus and chicken farming and a warm climate for people suffering from tuberculosis. Gillespie Field played a big role in World War II. It was then known as “Camp Gillespie.” “All of the planes were being made in San Diego but they were out in what became our airfield,” said Lay. In 1947, the Mother Goose Parade was a gift to children from local businesses. In 1961, Interstate 8 opened and businesses started booming. Lay believes growth means the sky is the limit for the city. “They're going to have to go higher, because we've run out of land,” said Lay. 1529

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A plane made an emergency landing Friday on westbound Interstate 8, according to the California Highway Patrol.A 36-year-old student pilot and 25-year-old instructor from California Flight Academy were above El Cajon and had engine trouble about 11:15 a.m., the CHP reported.According to SDSUBaseball's twitter page, the instructor is Ryan Muno, a former Aztec baseball star. Both men were trying to land at Gillespie Field but were forced to touch down on the freeway. The instructor took over the controls and landed safely in lanes near Second Ave."The instructor took over the controls of the plane. He stated he knew they weren’t going to make it to the airport, so his next course of action was to take it down the interstate," Officer Travis Gallows with CHP El Cajon said.Muno able to land the plane on the fast lane on I-8 Westbound, miraculously missing power lines and overhead freeway sign.10News spoke to Jim Andersen, who was driving a few cars behind the plane when it landed. When he passed by, he saw that the two aviators looked shaken up."The two gentlemen were talking to each other. They looked like they were catching their breath because they had just come to a stop," Andersen said.Thankfully it wasn't a crash course, but a valuable lesson on emergency landings. “For them to make that landing, and have nobody else involved in it, it’s pretty much a miracle,” Officer Gallows said. RELATED: Small plane lands on I-15, closing off-ramp / Plane lands on SR-67No cars were hit and no one was injured. The plane, a Piper aircraft based in El Cajon, remained intact. The pilot and instructor pushed the plane to the right shoulder.Officers shut down the Mollison Ave. off-ramp of westbound I-8 due to the plane emergency. WATCH LIVE: CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said the CHP would be in contact with the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the best way to remove the plane."Try not to stop and slow down," Bettencourt recommended to drivers in the area.CHECK TRAFFIC CONDITIONS  2095
