AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Faculty and staff at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan are being trained to fight active shooters in a unique way – by using hockey pucks. University police are conducting the training sessions, which were organized by the OU Union and the American Association of University Professors, to improve classroom safety for all. The use of hockey pucks allows those vulnerable to an active shooter attack to fight back with something heavy that will also cause a distraction, according to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon. "Hockey pucks provide the ability to be carried in briefcases or backpacks, are not considered a weapon and will meet the goal of distracting the shooter,” Gordon said. The OU Union has distributed hockey pucks to 800 of its members and will distribute an additional 1,700 pucks to students. "Part of the strategy for fighting is you need to create a distraction to give yourself time as a group in a classroom to rush the gunman so you can get your hands on the gun and take it away from the shooter," Gordon said.Although police and organizers find the pucks to be a good solution to the threat of a mass shooting, some students on campus disagree."I found it, at first, absurd," said Adam Kalajian, a third-year student at OU. "What good will it do? I mean, there’s an armed person coming in, why would you chuck a puck at them? What’s it going to do? Nothing." Jacob Gora, a fifth-year senior, echoed the same sentiment. "If I was to give you a puck and I had a gun, would I be able to take you out easily?" Gora asked. "I mean, a puck isn’t going to distract me or stop me from shooting someone."According to a release, the pucks also serve a second purpose. ASSISI, Italy (AP) — A 15-year-old Italian computer whiz who died of leukemia in 2006 has moved a step closer to possible sainthood with his beatification in the town of Assisi. Carlo Acutis is the youngest contemporary person to be beatified. He follows two Portuguese shepherd children living in the early 1900s who were proclaimed Catholic saints in 2017. Already touted as the “patron saint of the internet,” Acutis created a website to catalog miracles and took care of websites for Catholic organizations. While still in elementary school, Acutis taught himself to code using a university computer science textbook, and then how to edit videos and create animation. At least 257 people have been killed in a military plane crash near Algeria's capital, Algiers, state media reports.The aircraft crashed near the Boufarik air base, between Algiers and the city of Bilda. ATLANTA, Ga. -- Musicians across the country performed for voters to bring unity and hope in a divisive time."Music is therapeutic," said professional saxophonist Christopher King. "It's like that one time that we can all come together whether we're Democrat or Republican."After months of divisive politics, King and other musicians came together through Play For The Vote. Their mission: lift worries and burdens from voters' shoulders and create a different feeling at the polls this Election Day."With everything we've been through since the beginning of this year, you can turn a negative into a positive," said King of this moment in history.Poll workers across Atlanta expected crowds of voters lined up around the building, but the day was quiet. The average wait was under five minutes. For musicians Ally Jenkins and Brian Raddock, performing on Election Day, even to a small crowd, was a moment of triumph, especially in a time where their life’s work has been slipping through their fingers."It's been a nightmare," said Jenkins, a violinist. "Everything was canceled within like three days of each other, and this is tens of thousands of dollars of income and also our purpose for living."Her longtime friend and fellow musician, Brian Raddock, feels her pain. "Devastating is putting it lightly, and in a lot of ways, and it's just because we're both freelancers. It's really show to show," he said.These two have played on Broadway and across New York City until COVID-19 shut their livelihoods down."I feel the most alive when I'm playing music, and to not have that with other people, it's it just kind of makes you feel a little bit lost when you're having to do it by yourself," said Raddock.But Election Day brought back a glimpse of normalcy. "To see some people smile while we're playing music and to use art to really help bring some more beauty into the world, I can't really even describe what it means. It's just wonderful," said Raddock.Their audience, mostly poll workers, agreed. "It was fun. It lifted your spirits to hear them. They're so talented, they're so good, and then to hear their plight, that's just something you hadn't even thought about," said Pattie Harris, an election volunteer.Thousands of musicians across the country are experiencing the same struggle. That’s why so many came together for Play for the Vote. Hundreds of artists volunteered across 48 states to play for voters, but also to start a movement lasting far beyond this year’s election."Music is the one universal language. There's just really a power of connection, that we can communicate, yet not know each other.
