EL CAJON, CALIF. (KGTV) - A pair of Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets from an El Cajon high school are turning heads for their achievements. It has been 19 years since a student from Grossmont High School was appointed to military service academy and the class of 2018 has two who received multiple appointments.John Flaherty and Nicholas Ghosn earned four appointments in total.Flaherty was nominated to West Point and the United States Merchant Marine Academy while Ghosn earned them to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.“I was on top of the world,” said Flaherty describing the moment he got the call he was being appointed, “it was everything I dreamed of since I was four-years-old.”Flaherty is attending West Point and Ghosn will head to Annapolis at the end of their summer.Nicholas Ghosn says it was bittersweet to get the nod from the U.S. Navy.“All I ever wanted was to go to that college and join the ranks of the officer corps in the Navy, but I knew I was going to be away from my family and friends and home,” said Ghosn, “it’s going to be a long time before I get to see them so I was kind of sad because I knew this was it.”The 17-year-olds grew up a mile and a half from each other in Spring Valley and played sports together.“It’s unprecedented,” said Gunnery Master Sgt. Mark Brosnan on the two earning nearly million dollars in scholarship money from the schools.“I’ve never had cadets from public school get two appointments in the same year,” added Brosnan. They are teenagers, but they know they are on the precipice of something great.“They don’t let you into the Naval Academy or West Point if you eat tide pods,” laughed Ghosn, “Thats on the application.”The two head to their respective schools in late June, but plan to see each other at the Army-Navy game in December.  1855

DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) -- New details emerged Monday in a warrant released after a man is accused of poisoning his wife.A search warrant revealed that the woman had been sick for months and had no idea what was going on with her.According to the warrant, the young mother began to feel sick in September, then started feeling better before her condition worsened in January. She suffered hair loss, no longer had the strength to walk or open a door and had to be helped around by family members and her extremities even became like dead weights, according to the warrant.RELATED: East San Diego County man suspected of poisoning his wife with Thallium The warrant goes on to say that she suffered major loss of use of her extremities and was near death.Doctors determined that she received thallium poisoning by oral ingestion. Thallium is a chemical element used in rat poison and ant killers.Investigators determined that the poisoning could have only been done by someone with personal access to the food and drinks she consumed.According to the warrant, her husband Race Remington Uto, 27, had the most access to commit the crimes.Investigators searched the couple’s home in Dulzura and confiscated laptops, a coffee blender, four cups and other electronics. The warrant also shows that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy and that the couple had gone through counseling.Race told detectives he has no idea how his wife came into contact with the poison. She also said she had no idea who would want to hurt her.The warrant shows the victim thought she may have been exposed to the poison while working in an old school building. 1661

Dog owners from across the country boarded their dogs at Young Gunz Kennel so they could be trained to be hunting dogs. But now, owners are wondering how their pups were left for dead in kennels. After dropping off her puppy "Duke" at Young Gunz?Kennel in early April, Dani Allison of Spencer, Iowa, heard yesterday that Duke was one of three dogs found dead at the facility and the owner, Dustin Young, was nowhere to be seen. "I think that he let our dog die and didn't have the courtesy to call us or tell us or do anything but put him in a black bag," says Allison. Pottawatamie County Animal Control seized the dogs that were still living yesterday and took some to the Council Bluffs Humane Society and others to a makeshift shelter in Oakland where their owners could pick them up. "All of them were pretty shaken of course at the time because none of them had water in probably two days. So we did give them water and food of course but there was a lot of diarrhea and things like that that you have to deal with," says Matt Wyant, who oversees animal control in Pottawattamie County.  1134

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — A family jewelry shop in El Cajon is out tens of thousands of dollars after a brazen robbery Friday.A couple entered Ishtar Jewelry Store on Avocado Avenue and began browsing around. It was a seemingly ordinary evening."They were looking for different pieces of jewelry, bracelets, necklaces," said Nadin Toma, the store owner's daughter. "My mom was the one who was helping them out. The female found a piece that she liked."After that, Toma said the woman claimed she needed to get her wallet from the car to purchase the piece of jewelry."Our door to get in is an electric door," explained Toma. "We have to buzz anyone in and out just for security purposes."So, the woman was buzzed out, but Toma said she held the door open. That's when the man by her side made his move, jumping over the display counter, snatching up a handful of gold chains, then running out of the wide-open front door."They just grabbed and ran as fast as they could," Toma said. "They got away."Toma estimates the cost of the gold chains were anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But, the thief also left something behind. His fanny pack hooked onto the front door and broke off his body as he ran away.Toma said inside the fanny pack was the suspect's identification card, which she gave to police. She also said a Good Samaritan wrote down the license plate number of the car the couple used to get away."With any robbery, it's very painful for anyone who goes through it," said Toma. "Unfortunately, it happened to us."Toma is hoping the ID card and the license plate number will help police track down the suspect.El Cajon Police is actively investigating. 1666

During the last few months, many health experts have been talking about reaching “herd immunity” with the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Over the Christmas weekend, Dr. Anthony Fauci said he estimates the country needs to reach 80-85% with the vaccine to attain herd immunity. Here’s what that means.Herd immunity is a concept used in discussions about vaccination, and signifies the threshold needed for a population as a whole to be protected from a virus. The World Health Organization clarifies that herd immunity, or population immunity, “is achieved by protecting people from a virus, not by exposing them to it.”The Mayo Clinic also describes the situation following the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak. They say people who survived the pandemic were later immune to infection of the H1N1 flu, also referred to as swine flu.Health experts warn that relying on community infection to create herd immunity could be dangerous; there are questions about how long the antibodies created by infection protect against reinfection, and a high level of community infection could lead to overwhelmed medical facilities and a high number of deaths. When the threshold of herd immunity is reached, it means the vast majority of a population is vaccinated and has antibodies, thereby lowering the overall amount of community spread of the virus. It also means portions of the population who cannot get vaccinated are kept safer by the limited spread. What that threshold is varies depending on the virus and the efficacy of the vaccine.According to the WHO, herd immunity against the measles is reached with 95% vaccination, while herd immunity against polio is 80%.Dr. Fauci believes herd immunity for COVID-19 can be reached with around 85% of the population having antibodies. 1778
