SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-area elected officials mourned the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, with county Supervisor Nathan Fletcher calling her death, ``a heartbreaking loss for our country.''``Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg had a brilliant mind, compassionate heart and deep appreciation for our constitution and what American values should represent,'' Fletcher said Friday. ``I had the great honor to have lunch with her a few years back and was blown away by her intellect and playful spirit.``As a professor at UCSD, her dissent in Shelby v. Holder is a masterpiece in constitutional law. There will never be another RBG.''The court ruled in the case that the provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 containing the coverage formula determining which jurisdictions are subject to preclearance based on their histories of discrimination in voting was unconstitutional. In her dissent, Ginsburg wrote, ``throwing out preclearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet."Fletcher's wife, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, tweeted, ``My heart aches. We will truly miss the clear vision and leadership of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Rest in Power!''Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, D-San Diego, said ``We have lost a major force of our time. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a tireless advocate for justice, a brilliant legal mind, and an outstanding role model for generations of people.``Like millions of Americans, I join Justice Ginsburg's family in mourning her devastating loss, and honoring her legacy of feminism, equality, and progress.''Assemblyman Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, wrote, ``Our nation is better, fairer, and more just because of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Today, we pause to reflect on her extraordinary life. Tomorrow, we must do the work to ensure her legacy is not undone. Godspeed Notorious RBG.''San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez called Ginsburg ``a trailblazing advocate for women and a voice of integrity, justice, and equality on the Supreme Court.''``Her life has inspired generations to always pursue justice for all,'' Gomez said. ``In her memory, we must keep fighting to make equality a reality in America.''Ginsburg was the second woman appointed to the Supreme Court, nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993.The Columbia Law School graduate taught at Rutgers and Columbia and was a fierce courtroom advocate of women's rights, making her an iconic figure to feminists and earned her the nickname ``Notorious RBG.''While heading the Women's Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union in the 1970s, she brought a series of cases before the court that helped establish constitutional protections against sex discrimination.Ginsburg died at her home in Washington of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer, the court announced. She was 87. 2972

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District will host the region's third "Free Ride Day" Tuesday, making all fixed-route bus and rail services free for everyone to use throughout San Diego County, ensuring residents are able to reach their polling place and exercise their right to vote."Free Ride Day this year has a different purpose than in past years," said Nathan Fletcher, MTS Board Chair and San Diego County Supervisor. "We are holding it on one of the most important days for our country -- Election Day. We want San Diego residents to have every opportunity to participate in our democracy. Free transit rides all day long will help do just that."Free rides will be honored on all MTS and NCTD fixed-routes services including buses, the trolley, Sprinter and Coaster. MTS and NCTD services will operate on a normal weekday schedule.Passengers will not need a Compass Card or valid fare for either system, but face coverings will continue to be required on board all MTS and NCTD vehicles and at transit facilities. Services not included during the Free Ride Day promotion are Amtrak Rail 2 Rail, MTS Access and NCTD LIFT paratransit."North County Transit District is a proud supporter of Free Ride Day because it's critical to our agency's effort to promote transit ridership and improve air quality," said Tony Kranz, NCTD Board Chair and Encinitas Councilman. "However, NCTD is honored this year to provide transportation at no cost to our residents on Election Day. These rides will help bridge the gap between where people live and where they can cast their vote on November 3."According to the transit agencies, one reason for hosting Free Ride Day on Election Day is that transit can help bridge the gap between where a voter lives and where they need to vote. The San Diego County Registrar of Voters will have fewer polling places than in prior elections, so many voters will be required to drop off or cast their ballot at a different location than they did for the primary election in March. There will be 235 "Super Poll" locations, down from approximately 1,600 polling locations during the primary."Free Ride Day coinciding with Election Day elevates access for all of our San Diego voters to get to their assigned polling place," said Michael Vu, Registrar of Voters. "We encourage voters to do their homework if they plan to vote at their polling place. Double-check the location because it may have changed, wear a face covering and mark your sample ballot in advance to quickly fill in the official ballot at the poll."Both MTS and NCTD have implemented new cleaning and sanitizing protocols and practices on vehicles and at transit stations. Vehicles are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected daily with CDC-approved solutions for COVID- 19. Disinfectant is applied to all hard surfaces and common areas that are routinely touched or used such as seats, seat backs, fare boxes, driver controls, all handrails, walls, and windows. 3011

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Ralphs Grocery Co. has agreed to pay ,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit alleging a courtesy clerk at its Point Loma store was denied a request to change her work schedule to accommodate her pregnancy, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Wednesday. The agency's lawsuit alleged the Ralphs store in question denied the employee's request to change her schedule, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, and she was forced to quit as a result."The EEOC applauds Ralphs for agreeing to meaningful measures to protect pregnant employees in the workplace," said Anna Park, regional attorney for the EEOC's Los Angeles District, whose jurisdiction includes San Diego County. "Frontline managers and supervisors must be educated on their obligation to properly handle accommodation requests for pregnancy-related medical conditions."In addition to the monetary relief, Ralphs has agreed to review and revise its policies and procedures on discrimination and provide training to employees and managers on federal anti-discrimination laws, with an emphasis on pregnancy discrimination and handling employees' accommodation requests for pregnancy-related medical conditions, according to the EEOC.Patricia Kane, acting director of the EEOC's San Diego's local office, said, "With the proper policies and procedures in place, employers can reasonably accommodate a pregnant employee. Employers should take stock and review their policies and practices to ensure they are compliant with federal law." 1606
