MOSCOW, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said here Monday that he was satisfied and pleased with the smooth development of strategic partnership of cooperation with China.     Medvedev said during his meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi that he was looking forward to the upcoming state visit of his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, whom he has held a "successful" meeting with on the sidelines of the G20 London Summit. HEFEI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged efforts to fight pine wood nematode disease, which has caused severe damage to pine forests in several provinces.     Strong measures and more funds must be used to curb the spread of the disease, Hui said.     The disease, also known as pine wood cancer, can quickly kill huge numbers of trees. In China, the disease was first detected in1982 in eastern Jiangsu Province.     According to a conference in Huangshan City in eastern Anhui Province held by the State Forestry Administration, the disease has spread to 14 provincial regions, killed more than 5 million mu(333,333 hectare) of pine forests and caused huge losses.     Attendees at the conference agreed measures must be taken to stop the spread of the deadly disease by 2010 and reduce the area of affected forests 60 percent by 2030.

BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- China unveiled Saturday credit rating standards for the sovereignty entity of a central government, the first sovereign credit rating standards in China, aiming broader participation in global credit rating.     The standards were announced by Dagong Global Credit Rating Co., Ltd, one of the first domestic rating agencies in China.     The sovereign credit rating standards would be able to evaluate the willingness and ability of a central government to repay its commercial financial debts as stipulated in contracts, said the company.     The rating results could reflect the relative possibility of a central government to default as a debtor, and the rating is based on the country's overall credit value, according to Dagong.     Elements of credit risks will include the country's political environment, economic power, fiscal status, foreign debt and liquidity, said the company, adding that it judges the credit of a sovereign entity on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation of its fiscal strength and foreign reserves.     Compared with other rating agencies, Dagong pays more attention to the different economic stage of each country, and examines the features of its credit risks in a holistic and systematic view, according to Dagong.     Jiang Yong, director of the Center for Economic Security Studies under the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said the financial crisis exposed a risk of the international society relying solely on the credit rating institutions of a single country, which is the largest risk of the world economy.     Luo Ping, head of the training center under China Banking Regulatory Commission, said the launch of the sovereign credit rating standards would help improve the transparency of credit rating information, and would strengthen China's position in the international financial arena.

BEIJING, April 27 -- The yuan will remain stable against the U.S. dollar as China will take a cautious and stable position in its foreign exchange investment.     The Chinese currency gained against the US dollar in the past week and ended at 6.8273 last Friday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. The yuan closed at 6.8311 by the end of the previous week.     China will continue its policy of diversifying its huge amount of foreign exchange reserves, the currency regulator said last Friday.     Hu Xiaolian, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, told Xinhua news agency that it will stick to major currencies and high-quality assets in its foreign exchange investments.     China's overseas earnings hit 82.5 billion U.S. dollars in the past year, an 8-percent rise from a year earlier, according to data released by the administration last Friday.     Hu also noted the positive outlook of China's economy has lessened concerns over a depreciation in the yuan.

URUMQI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 overseas media organizations came to Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to report Sunday's riot, a press official said Wednesday.     "All media organizations are welcome to report the riot," said Hou Hanmin, spokeswoman for the Xinjiang regional government and in charge of the press center in Haide Hotel in downtown Urumqi.     "We will do our best to provide convenience for reporters while ensuring their safety," said Hou.     "We hope every media reports the incident objectively through close observation of the truth," she said.     The riot, which occurred Sunday evening in Urumqi, has left 156dead and more than 1,000 others injured.     Wu Nong, a press center worker, said the center had technicians to deal with communication problems for journalists. It has interpreters of English and Uygur languages.
