SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One month before the start of the new school year, San Diego Unified School District released the details of its online learning plan for the 2020-2021 school year.The school district's plans were created over weeks of discussions with parents, students, educators and administrators. San Diego Unified will start the school year Aug. 31. Details of the online learning plan include:A six-hour school day with customized learning experiences for each K-12 studentAll students will have daily, live interaction with their teachers via video conferencingCustom learning experiences will be based on student needs and will include daily live, online instruction (up to three hours), independent learning (at least two hours), working with other students in small groups or participating in educator office hours (at least one hour)All Elementary students will receive instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and the artsStudents will receive grades to measure their progress“We continue working to bring all students back to campus as soon as it is safe and responsible to do so. In the meantime, we must ensure our students continue to learn and make academic progress,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten.Superintendent Marten said the district will continue working on access and providing free computers and Wi-Fi service to families that need them.SDUSD plans to release additional details of the online learning plan for the fall on Aug. 10, the same day on which the district plans to provide the next public assessment of when it will be safe to physically reopen. 1646
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for an at-risk man who disappeared from a senior living facility late Saturday afternoon. According to police, 77-year-old Mario Aello left The Shores Post-Acute senior living facility around 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Aello reportedly told another patient he had plans to leave the facility to visit his sister in Sonora, Mexico. Aello suffers from short-term dementia and type two diabetes, police say. Aello is described as five feet, seven inches tall with brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt, a black and gray jacket, blue shorts and brown shoes. 610
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval Medical Center San Diego has been selected as one of a handful of sites to participate in a coronavirus vaccine trial.The medical center will participate in phase III trials for vaccine candidate "AZD1222" developed by AstraZeneca, according to the Department of Defense. The trial is looking for participants who are at the greatest risk of the coronavirus, including:Working in an essential job, such as healthcare professions, emergency response personnel, grocery workers, meat-packing plants, restaurant staff, public transit, etc.;Living in densely populated residential environments;Living or working in congregated living facilities such as correctional facilities or nursing homes; and/orA member of a community that has been hardest hit by this pandemic, such as older persons, persons with underlying health conditions, and racial/ethnic groups such as African Americans, Latino, and Native American populations.RELATED: UCSD to participate in national COVID-19 clinical trial, looking for volunteersThe trial is part of Operation Warp Speed, which intends to have a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutics by 2021. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police announced that a missing 12-year-old girl who disappeared Wednesday afternoon from Allied Gardens has been found safe. San Diego Police say 12-year-old Lani Pace went missing from the 5200 block of Lewison Court before 5 p.m. after her parents left their home to run errands. Lani was at home with her 10-year-old sister, Lily, police said.When Lani's parents returned home about an hour later, she was not there and her sister didn't see her leave, according to police. Lily did see her sister get dressed as if she was leaving the house, she told police.It's unclear where Pace was located. 628
