In the latest move by some countries to construct new embassies or give their missions in Beijing a makeover, the Australian embassy will spend million refurbishing its already elegant building, the Australian ambassador announced Tuesday.The refurbishment will cover much of the embassy's high-traffic areas and incorporate all four levels of the Chancery building.A new 2,500-sq m annex building will also be constructed on the site, the ambassador added.The project will begin immediately after the 2008 Olympics and is scheduled for completion in 2010.Geoff Raby, the Australian ambassador to China, said the number of embassy staff had increased to 190 resident Australian diplomats and their families and 120 Chinese staff.He recalled there were about 32 Australian staff and 60 Chinese employees when construction of the embassy was completed in 1992, making it one of more iconic buildings in Beijing."The Australian embassy in China is one of our biggest embassies in the world," Raby said.It is a sign that Australia attaches more importance to its relations with China, the ambassador said.Woods Bagot, a global studio specializing design and consulting that operates in Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe, will implement the project with Chinese local design institute UAD and multinational engineers Arup."The (Australian) government demanded new thinking for a new diplomatic era in China," Jason Marriott, managing principal of Woods Bagot, said.The Australian embassy is located in the second diplomatic neighborhood on Dongzhimenwai Street.The first diplomatic neighborhood is near Jianguomenwai and a third one is north to Liangmahe.The United States has plans for a new embassy project in the third diplomatic neighborhood after Republic of Korea and Malaysia finish their new buildings.Wang Fan, a researcher of international relations with China Foreign Affairs University, said the embassy building and renovation boom symbolized how important China was to foreign countries' diplomatic strategies.

TAIPEI, June 23 - Taiwan "presidential candidate" Ma Ying-jeou, who is from the main opposition party, has picked a "former premier" and economic expert as his running-mate for the 2008 election. Ma, from the Nationalist Party or Kuomintang (KMT) and one of two serious contenders for the "presidency", chose former "premier Vincent" Siew because of his experience, one of Ma's aide told Reuters. Siew, 68, served as "economics minister" from 1990 to 1993 and as "premier" from 1997 to 2000 under then "president" Lee Teng-hui. He now chairs the authoritative Chung-hua Institute for Economic Research. Siew ran unsucessfully for "vice-president" alongside KMT candidate Lien Chan in 2000, when opposition leader Chen Shui-bian swept to power, putting an end to half a century of Nationalist rule. Ma faces a close contest next year with Frank Hsieh, candidate of Chen's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Wen's three-day trip, the first by a Chinese premier in nearly seven years, comes six months after Abe went to Beijing to mend ties chilled by his predecessor Junichiro Koizumi, who repeatedly visited Yasukuni Shrine that honors Japan's war criminals of World War II. Yesterday, the two leaders declared their firm intention to move forward on rebuilding relations, signed agreements on energy and the environment and issued a joint statement that spelt out issues for cooperation. An environmental accord called for the two to work on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol on climate change by 2013. The other agreement committed the two nations to cooperate on developing energy resources and building nuclear power plants in China. In the joint statement, the two vowed to seek ways to jointly develop gas deposits in disputed waters, pursue the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and strengthen defense cooperation. During their talks, Wen said that the history issue is crucial for bilateral relations as it affects the national feeling of the Chinese people. It could be an obstacle to improved ties if not handled well, he added. He urged the Japanese leaders to face up to history and "open up good, forward-looking relations toward a beautiful future". Wen also reiterated China's position on the Taiwan question, hoping the Japanese side can realize the acute sensitivity of the issue and deal with it properly. Abe reiterated Japan's commitment to the principles enunciated in the three joint documents directing bilateral relations. On disputed waters in the East China Sea, the two sides agreed to speed up the negotiation process to seek a solution that is acceptable to both. The two sides pledged to make the area "a sea of peace, cooperation and friendship". Wen arrived in Tokyo just hours after the two countries signed an accord lifting Beijing's four-year ban on Japanese rice imports. China banned imports in 2003, claiming Japanese rice did not meet the requirements of its revised quarantine system. Wen is scheduled to address Japan's parliament today. He will also meet Emperor Akihito and co-chair an inaugural meeting with Abe on a high-level economic dialogue that will involve officials at the ministerial level and above. He will even join in a game of baseball - a popular sport in Japan - tomorrow with college students in western Japan before returning. Meanwhile, Abe accepted an invitation to visit China again this year. BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Financial operations of loan growth in China was steady in February with increasing individual deposits, the People's Bank of China reported on Wednesday.     Outstanding renminbi deposits among the country's financial institutions reached 40.49 trillion yuan (5.70 trillion U.S. dollars) in February, up 17.22 percent in comparison to the same period last year.     The growth was 2.10 percentage points higher than January, the central bank said in a statement.     In February, the outstanding value of all renminbi loans of financial institutions hit 27.22 trillion yuan, up 15.73 percent compared with the same period last year.     The growth was 1.01 percentage points lower than January, the central bank said.     China's M2, the broad measure of money supply, reached 42.10 trillion yuan in February, up 17.48 percent from a year earlier. The increment was 1.46 percentage points lower than the number in January.     The narrow measure of money supply, M1, rose 19.20 percent to 15.02 trillion yuan, but the increment was 1.52 percentage points lower than January.

LOS ANGELES - More Chinese tourists are expected to visit the United States as new travel rules between the two nations are pending, a report said on Sunday.Southern California is a likely destination for middle- and upper-class visitors with money to spend, said the Los Angeles Times.Travels agencies are preparing for what they hope could be a boom in new Chinese tourism to the United States that is expected to occur next year.Both nations are finalizing a deal to ease entry restrictions and lift a ban in China on promoting travel to the United States, according to the paper.The negotiations have been going on for several years, but China's government news agencies and sources at the US Commerce Department said a deal should be completed within the next few weeks, said the paper.The new travel rules are expected to be a particular boom to Southern California, which already sees more Chinese tourists - 110,000 in Los Angeles County last year - than anywhere else in the United States. But travel officials expect that number to grow significantly if more members of China's emerging middle and upper classes are able to travel to the region for vacations.China's travel industry is currently prohibited from marketing the United States as a travel destination because of disputes over the strict entry process initiated after 9/11 - a reality that US officials blame on the need for national security and concerns about visitors overstaying their visas, said the paper.
