SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Back in 1960, a young Amos Johnson Jr. was studying theology in Berkeley, Calif.It was the first time he was old enough to vote. Although he could cast a ballot without issue here in California, African Americans in southern states faced plenty of challenges."There were so many Jim Crow laws to keep blacks from voting in the south, all the civil rights in the south were really diminished," said Johnson.He describes the years leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which bans racial discrimination in voting, as a time filled with protest and frustration around the country."It was a chaotic time, it was a time of great distress," he said.For the longtime San Diego pastor, the right to vote isn't something he's ever taken for granted. He says since being able to cast a ballot for himself, he's voted in every single election he could."I think that's where the power is. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the nation continues to process what happened during the first presidential debate, many are expressing frustration about what didn’t happen.Local and national Latino American leaders are calling out the moderator and the candidates for making no mention of the millions of Latinos in the country.Just moments after the debate ended Tuesday night, organizations like the National Association of Hispanic Journalists shared a series of tweets highlighting that Latinos were not mentioned during the debate.According to the Pew Research Center, more than 32 million Latino voters are eligible to vote in November.Voters like Denisse Roldan Newell wanted to hear more from both candidates about their policies on a range of issues.“It's not just immigration, it's not just the border wall, it's having to do with economics, with smalls business development, with affordable health care, with education,” said Roldan Newell.Roberto Alcantar with the Chicano Federation told ABC 10News it was concerning that the candidates made no mention about COVID-19 and it’s disproportionate affect on the Latino community.In San Diego, Latinos make up 34% of the population but 65% of COVID-19 cases."These are not just Latino issues, these are issues for all of us as American. While, yes, we are Latinos, we are American and our issues are America’s issues," said Alcantar. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Choir members in San Diego have made it their mission to use music to bring comfort to people nearing the end of their lives.Threshold Choir's director, Nadean Burington, started the local chapter in 2011.  It is an a cappella choir that sings for and with those at the thresholds of life.  They sing at the bedside at San Diego hospices, institutions, and private homes.Recently, doctors diagnosed Burington with stage four cancer. She has recently started requesting the choir's services.“It's wonderful. It's a gift back to me now for what I've given to help start it,” Burington said. “I feel well at this point but I want to the music continue for as long as possible.”Burington says the next directors have been picked out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials say they seized more than .1 million in narcotics in two days at ports of entry in San Diego and Imperial Valley counties.Monday, a 45-year-old Mexican citizen driving a commercial bus was stopped at the San Ysidro port of entry and underwent a secondary screening. A K9 officer detected narcotics in the vehicle's gas tank.Officers found 229 pounds of cocaine, 23 pounds of fentanyl, and more than six pounds of heroin in the gas tank. In a second incident, on Tuesday, agents stopped a 23-year-old U.S. citizen at the Calexico East port of entry and referred them to a secondary screening. The port's imaging system screened the vehicle and noticed an anomoly in the back seat. A K9 officer also made a positive detection.Officers discovered 73 wrapped packages of methamphetamine hidden in the back seat, firewall, glove box, and inside vehicle panels.Later that same day, at the Calexico West port of entry, a 35-year-old Mexican citizen was found to be smuggling narcotics in the same manner.Imaging and a K9 officer detected narcotics, leading officers to find 50 wrapped packaged of methamphetamine inside vehicle panels.CBP officials seized all of the narcotics, valued together at more than .1 million.“Seizing these 400 plus pounds of narcotics is not only about keeping drugs out of our communities,” said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. “It’s also about keeping millions of dollars in profits away from transnational criminal organizations, and preventing the ensuing crime and chaos they cause on both sides of the border." 1617
