Caterpillar could eliminate nearly 900 jobs in the US and Central America, the company said on Friday.Job cuts will happen at locations in Texas and Panama as part of a restructuring, a spokeswoman said. Employees were notified earlier this year, she said.The heavy equipment manufacturer also said it is "contemplating the closure" of an engine factory in La Grange, Illinois, which is part of its subsidiary Progress Rail, a supplier of railroad and transit products. The closure, if it happens, would eliminate 600 full-time jobs in engine manufacturing. The company said it might be "transitioning" its rail manufacturing to facilities in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as well as "outside suppliers." The company said the employees were informed in January.Caterpillar is planning to close its work tools facility in Waco, Texas, by the end of 2018, eliminating 200 job and contractor positions there, the company said. The employees were notified last month. The company plans to move the manufacturing to Wamego, Kansas, and also to "external suppliers."Caterpillar also confirmed that it's closing a facility in Panama, and that 80 jobs will be eliminated. The company said these workers were informed in January.The cost-cutting measures come even as a growing global economy is boosting demand for its heavy-duty equipment. The company reported in January that quarterly sales grew 18%, its first increase since 2012.Sales in North American grew by 46% driven by selling and leasing machinery for home building, infrastructure and for the oil and gas industries. CBS Television Studios has released a statement after "NCIS" star Pauley Perrette implied that "multiple physical assaults" were the reason she quit the hit series.In a series of tweets earlier this week, Perrette -- who played forensic scientist Abby Sciuto -- talked about "tabloid articles out there that are telling total lies about me" and referenced her not "spilling the beans."She also mentioned "a very rich, very powerful publicity 'machine'" she also alleged was spreading false information about her before tweeting the reason she says she left."Multiple Physical Assaults," Perrette tweeted. "I REALLY get it now. Stay safe. Nothing is worth your safety. Tell someone."She left the long-running CBS crime drama after 15 seasons on the series in an episode aired last week."Pauley Perrette had a terrific run on NCIS and we are all going to miss her," CBS Television Studios wrote in a statement provided to CNN."Over a year ago, Pauley came to us with a workplace concern," the statement went on to say. "We took the matter seriously and worked with her to find a resolution. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - Campo Elementary School students were forced off a school bus after a man stormed onto the bus armed with two knives.Matthew Barker, 37, of Campo, was arrested by San Diego Sheriff's Department after he boarded the bus packed with students at an apartment complex near Jeb Stuart Rd. Friday around 8:30 a.m., according to Mountain Empire Unified School District superintendent Kathy Granger and SDSO.SDSO said Barker entered the bus and was immediately told by the driver to leave. Barker ignored the driver and continued up the stairs and toward students before the driver got in front of him.As Barker tried to push past the driver, a grandmother of one of the students saw what was happening and got onto the bus to help the driver, SDSO said. That's when Barker reportedly pulled out a knife and swung at the driver.As the driver and grandmother struggled with Barker, an older student ushered students to the back exit of the school bus and called to nearby parents for help. The students were able to exit out of the bus unharmed.Another good Samaritan then got on the bus, at which point Barker turned the knife on himself, according to SDSO. The Samaritan pried the knife away from Barker and pulled him off the bus as deputies arrived.Barker has been charged with felony assault. SDSO is investigating the incident and believes drugs were a factor in the attack.The bus driver and Samaritans were not injured."We take safety very seriously and want to assure you our buses remain a safe form of transportation for getting children to and from school," Granger said in a statement.Counselors will be at the elementary school Tuesday to offer students support if needed, she added. 1759

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It all started with a high school assignment.Megan O’Grady says she had to write about a topic that she felt passionate about in her life.As the daughter of a law enforcement officer who had recently learned of the deaths of five officers during a 2016 protest in Dallas, it wasn’t hard for her to share what she was feeling at the time.That paper would soon turn into a passion project and the nonprofit, Blue Line Bears.Four years later, the group has dispersed more than 700 teddy bears - sewn with the uniforms of fallen law enforcement officers and given to loved ones that have been left behind.“Taking that uniform shirt and making it into something that can be held and cuddled...it gives them comfort and a little bit of their loved one back,” the 18-year-old tells FOX 4.She says prior to this year, Blue Line Bears filled five to ten requests per week from agencies across the country.“Now, it can be up to like 20 or 30”.Megan’s father is Master Sergeant Patrick O’Grady with the Cape Coral Police Department.He says agencies from all over reach out to the group for bears.O’Grady says they also use the website Officer Down Memorial Page to keep track of impacted families.According to the site, there was 148 line of duty deaths in 2019.This year and at the time of this story, the website reports that the number is already 247.The site says most of those deaths are related to COVID-19 and gunfire.“At any time, we can have over 100 shirts waiting to be turned into bears,” O’Grady says.With an increase in demand comes the need for an increase in space.That’s why the nonprofit is now expanding to an official location in Cape Coral.Megan says the new space will serve as a place to hold meetings and a go-to location for the community to purchases merchandise.She says she's most excited that it will also provide a bigger workspace to prepare the keepsakes that bring support to many families.Because as Megan, now in her first year of college, says, “There’s always a lot of bears to be made.”The O'Gradys say the new location will be complete by the end of the year.The address for the new storefront is 3032 Santa Barbara Boulevard.Click here for more information about Blue Line Bears.This story was first reported by Shari Armstrong at WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. 2315

(KGTV) - For the second time this year, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet, has abruptly canceled all scheduled flights and stopped booking new flights indefinitely. Kelly Skemps was scheduled to fly from McClellan-Palomar airport to Las Vegas on Friday for her brother’s 50th birthday. But Thursday morning she got a call and a text alerting her that her flight had been canceled.“I was shocked,” said Skemps, who admits she was initially excited for the airline to be open.“I thought it was going to be perfect,” she said.Cal Jet bills itself as an easy and competitively-priced flight option from North County to Las Vegas.But this is the second time the small airline has inconvenienced customers by cancelling flights and blocking out their schedule.In February, Cal Jet went dark for nearly two weeks. President George Wozniak said the company they lease the plane from, Elite Air, needed it to fly NCAA basketball players.When they finally resumed operations in March, Wozniak told 10News, “we feel very confident going forward that we have the extra crew and airplanes necessary to fulfill that travel mission for these people.”Cal Jet did not respond to a request for comment after the latest round of cancellations, though a customer service representative attributed the problems to a lack of “aircraft and crew availability.”In an email to customers sent late Thursday, Cal Jet attributed the temporary closure to their efforts to expand to other cities. 1498
