EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Grossmont College and the office of Senator Joel Anderson came together for the eighth year in a row to honor the victims of September 11th. The day before the ceremony, volunteers put up 2,977 flags one for each life taken that September morning. San Diego native and 9/11 survivor, Bill Hay, was the keynote speaker for the memorial. Hay was on the 55th floor of the north tower when the first plane hit.Hay is 89-years-old and a Marine veteran with two purple hearts. He says he shares his story every year because he doesn't want younger generations to forget about what happened. The ceremony included other speakers from Grossmont College, CAL-FIRE and students from Steele Canyon High School. 755
During a press conference on Wednesday, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said that he believes the police officers who shot Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor should be charged with crimes.Biden said that the cases should be handled within the judicial system, but said that the officers in the cases should face charges "at a minimum."Biden added that the person who shot a Trump supporter during a weekend confrontation in Portland, Oregon should also face charges.When asked by reporters how Biden would keep Americans safe in times of civil unrest, Biden said he wouldn't "incite violence" and would condemn it when occurred. He accused Trump of acting "irresponsibly" by not condemning violence amid protests."Protesting is a right and free speech is a right. But to engage in violence: Burning, looting, unrest in the name of protesting is wrong and people should be held accountable," Biden said.Biden added that he "didn't hear much" from Trump in regard to the shooting of Jacob Blake.Biden is scheduled to visit Kenosha tomorrow, where he says he will "meet with community leaders." Biden's visit will come two days after Trump visited the city — a visit that largely consisted of viewing damage caused by riots and meeting with law enforcement officials. EL CAJON, Calif (KGTV) - The Cajon Valley Union School District has found a unique tool to help them teach thousands of refugee students, many of whom don't speak English.They're using soccer."The kids were exhausted after six hours of academics every day," says District Director of Community Engagement Michael Serban. "Time after school can be spent differently."Three days a week, English-learning refugee students take part in the Power Up program. They spend 45 minutes playing soccer, using the game to introduce words and concepts. They spend another 45 minutes in class working what they heard on the pitch."You can see the growth in the students' vocabulary," says Serban. "When they go back in the classroom, they're not just listening. They're using the words that they practiced to increase the basic foundational vocabulary."The program is only in its second year at Cajon Valley, but the problem of working with refugees spans decades.Since 1975, San Diego County has brought in 86,598 refugees. That's third-most in the state. Many of them settle in East County, where their children enroll in local schools."A lot of the students coming to us from refugee camps may not have been in school," explains Superintendent Dr. David Miyashiro. "They're coming to us in 7th or 8th grade with very low English language skills and also with literacy issues in their own language."Serban says families had been asking for a soccer program to help the kids adapt. The district teamed up with Sports for Learning to develop the curriculum.In addition to the soccer and vocabulary, the students get social and emotional counseling to help them cope with the trauma from their home country. It also teaches them the social norms of being in an American school.A few non-refugee students also participate in the class, to make sure the students make friends outside of the refugee community.The district also is a pioneer in helping all of its students learn about careers and options after school. They use the World of Work curriculum to help gauge the kids' interest and aptitude in a variety of career fields.That program helps the refugee students feel like they have a long-term future in America."Before we ask kids to learn to read, we have to show them why they need to learn to read," says Dr. Miyashiro. "These curricula bring relevance to their learning and connectivity to their future."The Power Up program is funded, in part, through a grant from the Refugee School Impact Program as part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. 2563
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Nearly 1,000 students left without answers after three charter schools forced to shut down. In a lawsuit filed by the Grossmont Union High School District in 2015, a judge ruled against the charter schools in Lemon Grove, El Cajon and Lakeside demanding they shut their doors June 28 for good. The charter students say they’re non-traditional and don’t want to go back into public schools. The district superintendent says they charter schools were unlawful when the charters got authorization through the Julian and Borrego Springs school districts. 586
Dr. Anthony Fauci said during a Congressional hearing Tuesday that President Donald Trump has never directed him to "slow down" the amount of coronavirus testing being conducted in the U.S. in order to prevent new cases from being reported.Fauci added that to his knowledge, Trump had not issued such a direction to anyone else on the coronavirus task force.In addition, Fauci said that the U.S. would be conducting more testing in the coming months and increasing contact tracing abilities.Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also denied that he had been told by Trump to limit the number of tests.On Saturday, at a rally in Oklahoma, Trump said that he asked officials in his administration to "slow down" testing capacity in order to keep the number of confirmed cases steady. During a briefing on Monday press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany said that Trump's comments were made "in jest."However, in an interview with Scripps national politics editor Joe St. George, Trump did not specifically say if he asked officials to slow down testing, but added that "if it did slow down, frankly, I think we're way ahead of ourselves." 1184
