The White House on Sunday decried Democratic-led congressional investigations, saying Democrats are refusing to abide by "rules and norms" that govern oversight authority as they issue subpoenas for documents the Trump administration refuses to hand over."There are rules and norms governing congressional oversight of the executive branch, and the Democrats simply refuse to abide by them," White House deputy press secretary Steve Groves said in a statement. "Democrats are demanding documents they know they have no legal right to see -- including confidential communications between the President and foreign leaders and grand jury information that cannot be disclosed under the law."The White House, Groves said, "will not and cannot comply" with what he called "unlawful demands made by increasingly unhinged and politically-motivated Democrats."The administration's statement comes as Democrats become increasingly frustrated by what party leadership sees as unprecedented, across-the-board stonewalling of their oversight powers -- and various congressional investigations -- by the Trump White House.Last week, President Donald Trump invoked blanket executive privilege over special counsel Robert Mueller's full report, preventing the House Judiciary Committee -- which had previously subpoenaed the Justice Department for a full, underacted version of the report -- from obtaining it.Earlier Sunday, House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff criticized the President's move, saying on ABC's "This Week" that there's no basis for Trump using executive privilege to keep Democrats from obtaining the full report."But here, the Trump administration has decided to say a blanket no; no to any kind of oversight whatsoever, no witnesses, no documents, no nothing, claiming executive privilege over things that it knows there is no basis for," he said. "There's no executive privilege over the hundreds of thousands of documents regarding events that took place before Donald Trump was President.""You can't have a privilege -- an executive privilege -- when you're not the executive," Schiff, a California Democrat, said.In a Sunday 2149

Three members of the Minnesota National Guard have died after the Black Hawk helicopter they were in crashed 16 miles southwest of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz said at a news conference Thursday."They paid the ultimate price in service to Minnesota and to the United States of America," Walz, himself a veteran of the MNG said. "The coming days will be dark and difficult. The state of Minnesota stands ready to assist the families of our fallen heroes."The names of the deceased crew members are not being released pending family notification, Walz said. The crew was conducting a maintenance test flight just after 2 p.m. when they lost contact with air traffic controllers, according to 708

This is the extraordinary tale of how a massive, strange-looking fish wound up on a beach on the other side of the world from where it lives. The seven-foot fish washed up at UC Santa Barbara's Coal Oil Point Reserve in Southern California last week. Researchers first thought it was a similar and more common species of sunfish -- until someone posted photos on a nature site and experts weighed in.What transpired after that surprised researchers from California to Australia and New Zealand. It turned out to be a species never seen before in North America. It's called the hoodwinker sunfish."When the clear pictures came through, I thought there was no doubt. This is totally a hoodwinker," said Marianne Nyegaard, a marine scientist who discovered the species in 2017. "I couldn't believe it. I nearly fell out of my chair."How the hoodwinker got its nameNyegaard spent years chasing the hoodwinker sunfish before she located and named the fish. All cases of the big fish were found in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Chile, she said. Except for one time in the 1890s, when drawings and records documented the fish appearing in the Netherlands.Scientists say there are five species of saltwater sunfish, and they come from different places. One enjoys tropical waters, another likes the subtropics and the hoodwinker prefers temperate water, Nyegaard told CNN. She works in the marine division at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand."This is why it's so intriguing why it has turned up in California," she said. "We know it has the temperate distribution around here and off the coast of Chile, but then how did it cross the equator and turn up by you guys? It's intriguing what made this fish cross the equator."The antics of this wayward fish are comical, especially considering how the species got its name.As Nyegaard researched the fish, she realized some species of sunfish had been misidentified. One species that was thought to be rare was very common, while another fish thought to be common was misidentified, she said."It had gone unnoticed because no one really realized it looked different. There's a long history of confusion about the species in the sunfish family," Nyegaard said. "This fish had managed to stay out of sight and out of everybody's attention. It had been taken for mola mola (an ocean sunfish) so it was hoodwinking us all."And a bit of hoodwinking is what it was doing to researchers in California, too.Scientists first thought it was a different type of sunfishAn intern at Coal Oil Point Reserve alerted conservation specialist Jessica Nielsen to the dead beached sunfish on February 19. When Nielsen first saw it, the unusual features of the fish caught her eye."This is certainly the most remarkable organism I have seen wash up on the beach in my four years at the reserve," Nielsen said in a UC Santa Barbara press release. She posted some photos of the fish on the reserve's Facebook page. When colleague Thomas Turner saw the photos later that day, he rushed to the beach with his wife and young son.Turner, an evolutionary biologist who is six feet tall, stretched out his arms to show the scale of the seven-foot-long fish. He snapped some photos of what he thought was an ocean sunfish, a rare sight up-close, he said."It's the most unusual fish you've ever seen," said the UC Santa Barbara associate professor. "It has no tail. All of its teeth are fused, so it doesn't have any teeth. It's just got this big round opening for a mouth."Turner posted his photos on 3545

This petty infraction of rules shouldn’t have led to an arrest. Had responding officers been able to overcome the language barrier, this situation could possibly have been resolved. We are showing our failure to police in an increasingly multilingual city. https://t.co/Kj3GQr6p39— Eric Adams (@BPEricAdams) November 10, 2019 337

The Texas House of Representatives voted 146-0 Tuesday to create the Sexual Assault Survivors' Task Force inside the governor’s office, bringing money and support at the highest levels of state government to reform how rapes are tracked, investigated and prosecuted across Texas. The measure provides up to million to fund the task force, which will collect, analyze and make publicly available a new set of information showing where gaps remain in the system to prevent and prosecute sexual assaults. The lead sponsor of the bipartisan measure said 563
