(AP/KGTV) — The U.S. Navy is expected to honor a World War II hero when a new aircraft carrier is named for Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller. "Dorie" Miller enlisted in September 1939 as a Mess Attendant Third Class. He was recognized for manning a machine gun on the USS West Virginia and returning fire against Japanese planes during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. He then helped rescue injured sailors as ship evacuations were ordered. Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for valor for his actions, the first African American to receive the award.This will be the second ship named after Miller and the first aircraft carrier ever named after an African American.“In selecting this name, we honor the contributions of all our enlisted ranks, past and present, men and women, of every race, religion and background,” said Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly. “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observed, ‘Everybody can be great - because anybody can serve’. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) – A firefighter was burned and one dog died in a house fire that erupted in Carlsbad Thursday afternoon. According to crews, the fire broke out on the 3900 block of James Drive around 1 p.m. The blaze started in the garage and quickly spread to the rest of the home. A firefighter received minor burns battling the blaze. A witness who was nearby when the fire started broke windows to help rescue one of the three dogs inside the home. One of the dogs was able to leap out of a window while a second was rescued by firefighters and revived with oxygen. A third dog was unable to be revived and died due to its injuries. At this time, it's unknown what caused the fire. 704

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Live Well San Diego is getting some new wheels.The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to purchase a vehicle that will take the services of the public wellness, safety and quality-of-life program directly to residents.The Live Well ``mobile office'' will offer disaster aid; community health services; housing assistance; and outreach to seniors, veterans and the homeless, according to planners.Supervisor Greg Cox called the rolling service a continuation of Live Well efforts that will allow the county to reach out to citizens more efficiently.The vehicle will make regular stops countywide, Health & Human Services Agency Director Nick Machionne told the board.``We don't anticipate any issues,'' Machionne said. ``The mobility will only improve our access.''The goal is to have the vehicle on the road this year, HHSA spokeswoman Sarah Sweeney said.The program will cost 0,000, which will come out of the fiscal 2019-20 budget.  A woman wielding a kitchen knife has attacked at least 14 children at a kindergarten in Chongqing in central China, local police said Friday.Chongqing City Banan District police said the children were slashed as they walked back to class after their morning exercises at Yudong New Century Kindergarten about 9.30 a.m. local time.Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed small children bleeding from severe cuts to their faces at the entrance of the kindergarten as stunned adults looked on.School security guards and staff restrained the 39-year-old attacker and took her into custody. Video from the scene appeared to show angry onlookers attempting to hit and kick the woman after she was detained.Chongqing resident Xia Yang said the attack had shocked residents of the city, a metropolis of some 30 million people.Nearby residents said the kindergarten doesn't have any outdoor space for the children, and they have to use a local public park for their morning exercises."It happened when the children were entering the school gate ... The attacker just ran at them with a knife.
