Washington's state capitol has become ground zero in the debate surrounding whether parents should be able to opt out of getting their children vaccinated. More than 60 kids have been diagnosed with measles in Washington, and the vast majority of them did not have a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. If passed, two bills in the state’s legislature would prohibit parents from opting out of vaccines for philosophical reasons. Cindy Sharpe, with the Washington State Medical Association, supports the bills. "Every child that gets a vaccination protects another child who can’t be vaccinated,” says Sharpe. She says her son is one of the very rare cases of kids that had a medical complication as a result of the MMR vaccine."That needs to be an individual discussion that's had, so the patient is looked at as a person and not as a population," Olsen-Corgan says.This debate isn’t just happening in Washington. Vaccination has become a national hot topic.In a recent interview with Axios, FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb suggested that a federal agency may one day step in to mandate vaccines. He stopped short of saying the FDA might take on that role. It’s an idea Sharpe says she might support, but Olson-Corgan says it concerning."I think it's a slippery slope when you start taking away freedoms, any freedoms in America," Olson-Corgan says. 1445

The CDC is investigating an alarming new trend that's sending people to the hospital across the country for lung issues. Doctors are reporting a spike in severe pulmonary illnesses possibly relating to e-cigarette products or vaping. There are now more than 150 cases in at least 16 states. One of those cases was 18-year-old Chance Ammirata, who ended up in a Florida hospital after he felt pain in his chest. “It was almost as if I was having a heart attack and I couldn't breathe,” he describes. It turns out his lung collapsed, which doctors say could have happened from something he inhaled. The teen blames vaping, which he started about a year and a half ago. “I didn't think vaping could have that effect on my lungs,” he says. In Texas, 17-year-old Trystan Zohfeld spent 18 days in the hospital and lost nearly 30 pounds after his lung failed. His doctors also believe vaping could have played a factor. According to the CDC, since June vaping has been linked to more than 153 mysterious cases of lung disease, spreading from coast to coast, in at least 16 states. The common link: vaping products that contain either nicotine or THC. “We've seen the damage and the dangers of nicotine addiction, but now, we see the possibility of lung problems and others,” says John Schachter with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Health advocates are pushing for the FDA to implement tougher restrictions, including a ban on flavored e-cigs, saying they target children. “Why are we waiting, God forbid, for a fatality? These are children. It's our job to protect them,” says Meredith Berkman, with Parents Against Vaping E-Cigarettes (PAVE). A family in Chicago has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the Chicago Police raided the wrong home during a 4-year-old's birthday party.Stephanie Bures, the plaintiff in the lawsuit, claims that officers had the wrong house during the Feb. 10 raid, claiming that the suspect sought by police had not lived there for five years. Bures claimed in the lawsuit that 17 officers raided the home during her son's birthday party. The lawsuit claims that officers pointed guns at the 4-year-old, and Bures' 7-year-old child.Chicago Police was unable to comment to NBC News on pending litigation. Bures' attorney, Al Hofeld Jr., held a news conference on Tuesday regarding the raid. He claimed that officers handcuffed the parents, shouted profanities and insults and smashed the child's birthday cake. "Hysterical, the children were terrified that they and their families were going to be shot," Hofeld said in a press release. "During the ensuring search, officers smashed TJ’s birthday cake, poured peroxide on his presents, trashed the basement unit, screamed profanity and insults at the families, unlawfully questioned the children in a separate room without the consent of their parents, and joked and laughed throughout the raid.
