BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — For three days, Andrew Bryant said he watched the Parkland shooting suspect inside his jail cell. Bryant, an inmate at the Broward County Jail, said he saw Nikolas Cruz pacing and staring at the ceiling inside his individual cell in the infirmary wing.“I don't think he was looking at anyone, just laying down looking at the roof,” Bryant told Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. Jail records confirm Bryant spent time in the same wing of the jail as Cruz while incarcerated on drug-related charges.Inmate observation logs of Cruz released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office reveal more insight into the accused killer’s behavior. Bryant said it’s that behavior he saw that made him want to reach out and speak to WPTV. “He was just lost in his mind,” Bryant said.Bryant could hear Cruz, see Cruz, and form his own opinion of Cruz. “I just hope he doesn't plead insanity or he gets off or anything because, in my opinion, I don't think he's crazy and deserves everything coming to him.”Bryant said everyone in the jail, from the deputies to the inmates, were talking about Cruz.“I think he felt intimidated being in jail,” said Bryant. “Everyone had a problem with him.”Bryant’s observations matched those recorded by deputies. A deputy is required to check on Cruz every 15 minutes and record their observations of him. They reported Cruz sleeping most of the day and eating infrequently.Cruz made little eye contact with anyone, deputies wrote in the reports. He often sat with a blank stare and appeared to be in thought. He was not allowed to interact with other inmates.“I’ve got kids so I feel strongly about this situation,” Bryant said. “If he was out of his jail, somebody probably would’ve hurt him, to be honest.”Deputies wrote Cruz is cooperative, logical, and coherent. One night, he requested a Bible to read.On one occasion when he met with his attorney, deputies said Cruz was “responsive to interview, shaking his head, nodding and agreeing, forward and engaging in the conversation.”Jail records show Cruz met with his brother twice last month, as well as with a family friend. He also met with attorneys, psychologists, and investigators.Bryant said the infirmary was on a heightened level of security while Cruz was there. He said inmates were not allowed out of their cells during that time. “When he’s not there, you will get out once or twice a day for an hour or so.”On Fen. 23, Cruz left the infirmary for another floor where he is kept away from other inmates.Bryant was released from the Broward County Jail five days later. 2635

BONITA (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Bonita say their street is becoming congested with "toll dodgers" - drivers who are going out of their way to avoid paying the .55 toll on State Route 125.   It's not just the traffic buildup that neighbors find concerning, it's that these drivers are often speeding - right past an elementary school, parks and horse tracks. In a community meeting Tuesday, the City shared plans to fix the issues on Briarwood and San Miguel Ranch roads. RELATED: Drivers dodging tolls on SR 125 cause problems in South Bay neighborhood"There's a lot of concern about people trying to evade the tolls," said Greg  Cox, with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. As a result, Cox said the City lowered the speed limit on San Miguel Road to 25 mph and placed a stop sign at a popular horse crossing. They also plan to intall a traffic signal at Sunnyside Elementary School. "If the County can secure a grant for the funding, that could be done within the next year," Cox said. John Scott has been in the neighborhood since the mid 1980s. BETHESDA, Maryland — The Montgomery County Police press office said Tuesday afternoon that it received a call to assist for a report of an active shooter at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.Around 3:15 p.m. Eastern, reports indicated it was a drill, not an actual active shooter situation.During the situation, Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Maryland, tweeted about it from inside the center."I am currently at Walter Reed Medical in Bethesda where we've been told there is an active shooter," Ruppersberger said. "I am currently safe in a conference room w/ approx 40 others."Two individuals separately told CNN they were inside the building at Walter Reed just before 3 p.m. Tuesday and were told to continue to shelter in place. Bowe Bergdahl received a dishonorable discharge from the US Army but will avoid prison time for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy after abandoning his outpost in Afghanistan in 2009, a military judge ruled Friday.The judge also ruled that Bergdahl's rank be reduced from sergeant to private. Bergdahl has looked forward to today for a long time," Eugene Fidell, Bergdahl's civilian attorney, said at a news conference after the sentence was announced."As everyone knows he was a captive of the Taliban for nearly five years, and three more years have elapsed while the legal process unfolded. He has lost nearly a decade of his life."The sentence is effective immediately, except for the dishonorable discharge, which Bergdahl is appealing, according to Fidell.Bergdahl appeared visibly shaken as the sentence was announced, according to CNN affiliate WRAL. He was shot in the leg, and his K-9 partner, Remco, was shot in the face and killed."I thought I was dead," said Hatch, who now walks with a heavy limp after 18 surgeries. He said he was concerned because there was little time to plan the search for Bergdahl, and other soldiers knew he had willfully walked away.When asked why he would go searching for Bergdahl, Hatch said, "He is an American.""He had a mom," he added.Bergdahl tearfully apologized this week to the service members who searched for him."My words can't take away what people have been through," he said. "I am admitting I made a horrible mistake."Lawyer: Trump's remarks 'preposterous'Following the sentencing, President Donald Trump tweeted that the decision was a "complete and total disgrace to our Country and to our Military."Fidell denounced the President's comments, saying "every American should be offended by his assault on the fair administration of justice and his disdain for basic constitutional rights."Bergdahl became a political talking point in 2014 after President Barack Obama's administration traded five detainees at Guantanamo Bay in exchange for his release.In February, Bergdahl's defense team argued he was unable to have a fair trial after Donald Trump became president because of comments Trump made on the 2016 campaign trail.During the campaign, Trump called Bergdahl a "dirty, rotten traitor" and said he "should be shot" for deserting his post. "In the good old days, he would have been executed," Trump said.Bergdahl's attorneys argued that the comments, as well as critical words from Sen. John McCain, violated his right to due process. But Col. Nance ultimately ruled against dismissing the charges, saying that while Trump's comments were "troubling," they did not constitute a due process violation."Trump -- when he was a candidate, of course -- made really extraordinary and reprehensible comments targeted directly at our client," Fidell said Friday. "It's one of the most preposterous state of affairs that I can think of in American legal history."Investigator said jail time would be 'inappropriate'Since his return home to the United States, the 31-year-old from Idaho has been the subject of scrutiny while the US military investigated his decision to leave his post.Bergdahl has said he abandoned his post because he wanted to travel to a larger base to report "a critical problem in my chain of command," though he did not specify what the problem was.He was charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy in March 2015.Kenneth Dahl, the Army general who led the investigation into Bergdahl's actions and interviewed the soldier for a day and a half, previously testified in a preliminary hearing that jail time would be "inappropriate."During his time in captivity, Bergdahl said he was tortured, beaten and spent months chained to a bed or locked in a cage while his health deteriorated.
