SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Violence has been a part of our world since biblical days. I had been with 10News just a couple of months when one of the worst mass killings in U.S. history unfolded close to our border. We begin with that monstrous act.One scene always comes to mind from July 18th, 1984; the day of the McDonald's Massacre in San Ysidro. The body of 12 year old Omarr Hernandez, lying alongside his bicycle on the sidewalk of the fast-food restaurant. James Huberty told his wife he was going out "to hunt humans" that day. He took the lives of 21. A SWAT team sniper ended the seige by killing Huberty. The next day, Omarr's family invited us into their home to share their grief. It was overwhelming.Co-ed Cara Knott was murdered just after Christmas, 1986. Beaten with a flashlight, strangled, and thrown off a bridge alongside I-15 by a California State Trooper on patrol. Craig Peyer has made it a habit to pull over young women at night and direct them down a closed, unfinished exit ramp. He'd try to chat them up. Cara had recently taken a self-defense course and may have scratched at Peyer the night she was trapped in the darkness...and he killed her. Dozens of women told authorities they had been similarly stopped, plus there was blood and fibre evidence--threads from a rare CHP uniform patch were on her clothes. The jury voted guilty. Peyer is serving a life sentence. Cara's dad died pulling weeds from the memorial garden near where she was found. I've seen the rest of the family become closer as time passed..Stephanie Crowe was 12 when she was stabbed to death in her bedroom in 1998. Initially her 14 year old brother and two of his friends were suspects; and two of the boys confessed, including Michael Crowe. Those confessions were later deemed inadmissible; that the police interrogation was flawed. The boys were released and a transient in the rural Escondido neighborhood that night was arrested and brought to trial. There were smudges of Stephanie's blood on Richard Tuite's long-sleeved t-shirt. He escaped custody briefly during the trial but was quickly re-captured. Eventually convicted of voluntary manslaughter, the verdict was overturned on appeal. Tried a second time, a different jury considered that there was no DNA, no fingerprints, no physical proof that Tuite had entered the house; that perhaps the blood stains were due to cross contamination. He was found not guilty. The Crowe family has struggled with their grief for many years.7-year-old Danielle van Dam was stolen from her home in Sabre Springs in February, 2002. Missing for nearly a month, her body was discovered under a tree in a rural area more than 20 miles away. A 49-year-old neighbor, David Westerfield, quickly came under suspicion and was arrested on kidnapping charges after her handprint and traces of her blood were found in his motor home.Westerfield was convicted and sentenced to death. He's been on death row at San Quentin for 16 years. Brenda van Dam became an advocate for victim's rights.Chelsea King was running on a trail outside Rancho Bernardo in 2010; attacked and killed by an emotionally disturbed stranger, John Gardner He avoided the death penalty by admitting to the rape and murder of another teenager the year before, Amber DuBois... and leading police to her grave on a hillside near the Pala Indian Reservation. The Kings started a foundation that touched thousands.James Holmes dressed in tactical clothing and fired off multiple rounds into a crowded Aurora, Colorado movie theatre in 2012. It was during a midnight showing of that year's Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Holmes, from Rancho Penasquitos, killed 12 and wounded 58 others before running out to his car where he was taken down and cuffed. He'd also rigged his apartment with homemade bombs to continue the killing spree but the booby trap was defused without injury. An insanity plea was rejected and Holmes was convicted and sentenced to 12 life terms plus over 3300 years in prison. 4009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many local events went on as planned this weekend, several conferences slated for San Diego have canceled or postponed due to coronavirus worries.So far, a handful of events have pulled back or canceled their plans:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center.The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say. Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The convention center says in addition to the cancellation, some organizers have contacted them about postponing their events until later this year. "We've done things such as increasing sanitation areas within the port facilities, as well as setting aside some prescreening and quarantine areas in case the cruise lines would need it," Valenzuela said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) A local conservation group came dangerously close to running into the armed kidnappers who snatched a California tourist and her guide while on safari in Uganda. Kim Endicott and her driver were abducted at gunpoint from the Queen Elizabeth National Park across the border from Congo on April 2.They were released over the weekend. Details of the negotiated release have not been made public. Bill Toone is the director and founder of Ecolife Conservation in Escondido. He and several other members were leaving the park just as Endicott's group was arriving. Their guides stopped to talk. Endicott's group left and returned to their lodge. They returned to the park roughly four hours later. That's when they were ambushed. "I'm a little surprised that it ended as positively as it did. It could have obviously been really awful, and I kind of thought it might be, so it's thrilling that she's out of there," said Toone. Among other things, Ecolife Conservation provides safe, fuel efficient stoves for homes in remote areas of the world. The group has been working in Uganda for seven years. Toone said he's never felt unsafe. He was shocked to learn of the kidnappings."First of all, it's low season there and so there are very few tourists around anyway, so I guess that is why we became a target, it made it a little simpler, or she became a target," said Toone. Toone said in the days that followed the kidnapping; his group was required to have armed guards. He says the Ugandan government has been misleading on this issue."They say it's required to have armed guards when you go in the park. We've been going to the park for seven years. San Diego (KGTV) - Thousands of kids across California approved for in-home nursing care are struggling to get the help they desperately need.On Thursday two children filed a class-action lawsuit against the California Department of Health Care Services and its director claiming the state has failed to fulfill its commitment to provide them with sufficient Medi-Cal in-home nursing services.It says, “this class action lawsuit asks the Court to order Defendants to take all steps necessary to arrange for previously-approved, medically necessary in-home shift nursing services for Plaintiffs and Class members.”According to the lawsuit plaintiff, Ivory N. is a seven-year-old and a Medi-Cal beneficiary. It says the child needs 63 hours per week of skilled nursing at home but only receives about 56 hours per week.The non-profit group, Disability Rights California, says more than 4,000 Medi-Cal eligible children have been approved by the state to receive Medi-Cal in-home nursing care, but the state lacks an effective system for arranging for needed nursing."It’s too bad that a lawsuit had to be filed, but they are right to file it because right now that need is not being met,” said California State Assemblyman Brian Maienschein.In 2017 Maienschein tried to get the problem fixed through legislation. He believes the state is not following through on its promises to the kids.“It was a significant victory last year that we were able to get money in the budget, but they are still not following through on the promises they made,” he said.According to a news release from Disability Rights California, “29 percent of authorized Medi-Cal nursing hours go unstaffed.” 1693
