SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Statewide DUI arrests and fatalities saw a significant increase over Christmas weekend. A total of 47 people died in DUI-related crashes in 2018 compared to 27 deaths over the same time period in 2017. DUI arrests also saw a significant rise. More than 1,100 people were arrested for DUI in 2018 compared to 917 in 2017. In San Diego County, three people died due to DUI-related crashes, tying with 2017. DUI arrests rose slightly from 56 to 57 in 2018. The reporting period for the arrests and deaths was Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, December 25. 584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Serious crashes and traffic-related deaths have increased in San Diego, a trend the police department is hoping to reverse.One strategy to tackle the problem is education through enforcement operations.On Saturday officers focused on the Hillcrest and Linda Vista neighborhoods, citing drivers for speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs/signals and failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. They also cited pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who have the right of way. "For me personally I really want to see the number of our serious collisions reduced because when I am on my normal shift I do go to the serious injury collisions since I work traffic division, and it's just really disheartening and sad to see people involved in preventable collisions getting seriously injured," said traffic Sgt. Robert McDonald. McDonald says the city saw 56 fatalities in 2018, a roughly 51% increase in deaths from 2017. He says 34 of the fatalities were pedestrians. Officers were also targeting people on scooters breaking the rules. "I have seen more and more people riding the scooters on the street, like they're supposed to, instead of the sidewalk, but we still have a continuing problem with people riding on the sidewalk, going too fast, drinking, colliding, injuring themselves," said Sgt. McDonald.Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 1541

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police requested the public’s help Thursday to identify a man suspected of buying an Apple MacBook and iPhones through identity theft and credit card fraud. The man used a fake ID card with the victim’s real information to access the victim’s account at the Verizon store on Sports Arena Blvd. June 9, police said. Two new Apple iPhone X’s worth ,500 were added to the victim’s account. Police said the man also went to the Best Buy on Mission Center Road and bought a MacBook worth ,000 through the victim’s store credit card. The victim has no knowledge of how his information was accessed, police said. Investigators said the suspect is a white man in his mid 20s to mid 30s, heavy set, with short dark hair. He had a beard and was wearing sunglasses when he shopped. Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 885

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SDG&E says the company is ready to meet increased demand over the next few decades, as temperatures rise across California.According to a recent climatology study, the number of days in San Diego where the heat index will top 100 degrees is expected to jump to 4 per year by 2050. The study says it will be at 7 per year by 2100. By contrast, historically, San Diego has averaged less than one day per year above 100 degrees.That means more people will turn to air conditioners and fans to keep cool, creating more demand for energy throughout the year."This is one of our top priorities," says SDG&E Communications Director Denice Menard. "We know the summertime surge is coming."Menard says SDG&E engineers have run thousands of simulations to test the power grid. The company has also invested heavily in solar and wind turbine energy to increase supply.Menard also says the new 15-mile transmission line from Sycamore to Penasquitos will help deliver energy to areas that need it. And a new synchronous condenser in the North County will help manage surges in demand."There have been so many preparations and simulations done by our engineers," Menard says. "We’ve done everything we can to make sure we’re prepared and that San Diego is safe and can beat the heat."SDG&E is also looking to their customers for help. The company hopes their new Time of Use plans will encourage people to avoid energy use from 4-9 pm, when the temperatures are highest and more people are home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams.
