CINCINNATI (AP) — The Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan has died at the age of 77.A family spokesman says he died at his home Sunday in Danville, California.Morgan was suffering from a nerve condition, a form of polyneuropathy. CLEVELAND — The morning of Nov. 23 started out like any other for Amanda Zupancic. She’s a special education teacher in Cleveland. Around 11 a.m. that morning, in what would be her 3rd period class, she was in session with a middle school student and his mom on Zoom in the upstairs office of her west Cleveland home.She was suddenly interrupted with a loud noise.“I heard a glass-shattering crash downstairs,” she said. “I was like, 'hold on, I think someone is breaking into my house, just joking.' I didn’t think anyone would be breaking into my house in the middle of the day,” she said.But that is exactly what was happening.“There was a man walking though my baby gate with a knife in his hand walking upstairs,” said Zupancic. “He started threatening me, yelling at me, calling me names. He grabbed me upstairs into my bedroom.”The man began rummaging through her things, all the while Zupancic’s student and his family were still on that Zoom call listening from Lake County.In the 911 call, the student’s dad tried to explain the situation. “The teacher that teaches my son, somebody broke into her house we saw it on the Zoom,” said the student’s dad to a Lake County dispatcher.As the robber frantically searched for valuables, the dad gave as much detail to the dispatcher as he could.“I guess she heard the man say, ‘Get on the floor. I’m going to cut your f-ing throat,’” he told the dispatcher.Zupancic told the man he could have her car keys but they were downstairs. He agreed she could go and get them. She said, instead of getting the keys, she let her two dogs out.“When I reached for my keys, instead I opened the gate and I have a German shepherd and a Great Dane-boxer mix. So the German Shepherd stood between myself and this guy, and the Great Dane Boxer mix went at him,” she said.It gave her enough time to think.“I just grabbed a pair of scissors and I chased him to the front door,” she said.She continued to chase him down her street.“I started chasing him with this pair of scissors, in my house shoes, down the street, yelling 'help me, help me, this guy robbed me,'” she said.Zupancic said a local contractor working on a house in her neighborhood saw the encounter and tackled the man to the ground and detained him until Cleveland police arrived.When they got there, they arrested Charles Derosett.Derosett is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault as well as other charges. He is a convicted felon, previously serving time behind bars for aggravated robbery.Zupancic is still shaken up. COCKEYSVILLE, Md — A unique program that partners retired thoroughbred racehorses with veterans to help combat PTSD is now adapting to help Maryland National Guardsmen who are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic."It's been rewarding every day. Just to see the smiles on the faces," employee Steve Mooney said.Mooney first got involved with Saratoga WarHorse 5 years ago, participating after he got back from a deployment in Afghanistan and suffered from PTSD and insomnia."It has help me cope with things a little different. Help me look at stress a little different," Mooney said.After going through the program in another state, Mooney helped start a branch at the Baltimore County Center for Agriculture in 2018."How many marriages did we save? How many people came off substance abuse?" Mooney said.He said the program changes lives with the connection veterans work to earn from horses."They're running around the pen trying to avoid you, and then as you interact with the horse, it comes to a point that the horse is gonna say, 'alright, I wanna be your friend now,'" Mooney said."You can see that moment when that horse and that vet decide to become friends, and there's a kind of like a handshake, and that's probably the coolest part of this whole program for me," volunteer Marc Junkerman said.An Army vet, Junkerman also decided to volunteer with the program after participating himself and feeling the change."I had to be mindful that whatever I was bringing into that ring had to positive. I had to put all the negativity down because otherwise, you're not going to get that connection with the horse. So, what's really cool is if you put that negativity down and then go in there and connect, you usually bring something better out," Junkerman said. "The flip side is, why would you then pick up something you put down? We will clean it up with the other stuff at the end of the day."Now, the program is adapting to help the thousands of Maryland National Guardsmen who dropped what they were doing to help the state through this pandemic."This is a completely different thing that none of us have dealt with in the past," Tech Sgt. CINCINNATI, Ohio — Customs officials in Cincinnati discovered thousands of live crabs that they said someone was trying to smuggle into the country.Agriculture specialists with U.S. Customs and Border Protection discovered the invasive Chinese mitten crabs on Oct. 16 while conducting routine inspections, the agency said in a news release.The crabs are considered a seasonal delicacy in Asia, according to Customs officials. But they have had a "disastrous impact" on habitats where they've been introduced.The crabs were hidden in packages labeled as various types of clothing. They were being sent to various residences in New York. The shipments were refused entry into the U.S. Across the country, Customs agriculture specialists intercepted more than 352 pests and 4,638 quarantine materials on any given day in the fiscal year 2017, according to the agency. 877
