A new warning has come that more older adults, over the age of 65, are dying from falls.According to the Centers for Disease Control it's increased from about 18,000 a decade ago to 30,000 in 2016. That number could climb to as many as 59,000 by 2030. Luckily falls are preventable. Here are the main things you can do to keep your house safe.These are small changes you can start making now even if you're not over 65 or not concerned about falling. Jason McCullough with Brothers Redevelopment Inc. walked The Now through a house to show some of those changes. The best part is they're relatively easy.McCullough said some of the changes actually start before you get inside the house."Most falls happen (in) main entry areas, kitchens and baths," McCullough said.According to McCullough a grab bar is a versatile tool that can help in any room."They come in a kind of a decorative finish," McCullough said. "This one's brushed steel.  So we usually place these in a bathroom. We'll do a vertical installation for transitions in and out of the tub. And then sometimes we'll also place a diagonal installation so that when you're in the tub you have more safety and stability."McCullough showed how it should look."It's at a height where she can grab it," McCullough said. "It's on a vertical next to the tub. So she can use that getting in and out of the tub, so it's a great transitional stability piece."He said tubs can be an area prone for falls."You have these custom tubs," McCullough said. "Obviously they're raised so they're a little higher than your normal tub is, but it's still, you can see it's below my knee, so that's much more of a fall risk 'cause you're going to catch that and you can't really catch yourself and you're going all the way in. But if you have this, you have something to hold on to."Transitions from room to room can be fall hazards as well."So this would be an issue right here because we have a rise in the floor and this transition's a little thin," McCullough said as he pointed to a change in floor height in a threshold.  "We'd want to see a wider, more sloped transition piece here or we'd want the floor installed level with the other existing floor."McCullough said fall dangers can even be outdoors. He pointed out several issues in the backyard."This is a great example of where we get comfortable and we miss things over the years," McCullough said, as he pointed to steps without rails.  "Our houses age just like we do.  And as we get older, a lot of times our eyesight starts to go, their motor skills start to slip and they don't notice things that they would have, or someone new to their house would have noticed.  And just this kind of little small ledge here, this could be a trip hazard and you don't have anything to grab onto if you do trip and fall."Another thing to consider is if you find yourself always grabbing the wall or you visit a loved one and you notice marks on the wall, that may be a sign that it's time to consider these upgrades. 3068

A proposed state fund would pay rent for people on the brink of eviction to help them avoid homelessness.The 0 million fund is a key part of Gov. Gavin Newsom's budget proposal to address the state's homeless crisis. The fund, called the California Access to Housing and Services fund, could also be used to support the creation of more housing units and help stabilize board and care housing facilities. Newsom is proposing a .4 billion plan as part of his annual budget. Of that, 5 million would go to investments in Medi-Cal. The proposal also calls for the state using its own excess land for the site of new shelters. That includes open space near freeways, decommissioned hospitals and fairgrounds. The Del Mar Fairgrounds board has held preliminary discussions adding housing on the property. In San Diego County, excess property locations are also in downtown, El Cajon and Oceanside. An additional location deemed excess has instead been assigned to serve as a shelter for migrants seeking asylum. Jewish Family Service will operate the facility, and has requested the location not be disclosed due to security reasons. The current migrant shelter at the old family courthouse downtown at 6th and Cedar will close Dec. 31 for redevelopment. 1266

A new health hazard is washing up on shores around the world.“They found a lot of it in Italy. They found a lot of PPE in beaches of Japan and Southeast Asia,” said senior scientist Jennifer Brandon, Ph.D. about personal protective equipment, or PPE. “We’re already finding thousands of gloves and masks as the pandemic continues.” Brandon believes more people are using and also improperly disposing of these single-use plastics and says the litter can last several lifetimes.“I would not be shocked if it’s going to be in the hundreds of thousands in gloves and masks in the next years,” she said.Brandon says with grocery stores no longer allowing reusable bags and restaurants serving to-go orders in Styrofoam containers, this is adding to the problem.This swell of plastic pollution has a chain effect, impacting animals and humans.“That plastic is going to get eaten by animals and those animals are what you eat,” Brandon said. “Sometimes it can break down small enough, it even gets into our water supply and sea salts.”Experts say 30 billion pounds of disposable plastic is dumped into the ocean every year. Now, that number is expected to rise even more due to PPE waste.“We expect that plastic pollution will outweigh fish in the ocean if we don’t take care quick action to prevent that from happening,” said Shelley Luce, president of Heal the Bay, a nonprofit with the mission of keeping water clear and clean.“We do beach clean ups year-round and we generally get 700 to 800 people coming out early on a Saturday morning,” she said.With social distancing orders and many beaches closed due to COVID-19, large group gatherings are no longer allowed in some areas.So, Luce is now encouraging people to clean up what she calls “COVID waste” on their own or within their social bubble.“You can do a cleanup in your neighborhood,” she said. “Pick that trash up off the streets because you know where that's going to go, into a storm drain and out into the ocean.”Luce says there are simple solutions for this worldwide problem: properly dispose of PPE or wear a cloth mask, both of which can help stop the spread of coronavirus without creating an environmental hazard. 2187

A Mississippi school district has apologized and a high school band director has been suspended after the band staged a halftime skit that depicted police being held at gunpoint.The controversial skit came as the Forest Hill High School band from Jackson performed Friday during a football game against Brookhaven High School to the south. A New York appeals court has denied a motion by President Donald Trump's attorney to stay the Summer Zervos defamation case pending appeal, meaning the gathering of evidence known as "discovery" can move forward as both parties await a ruling on the appeal.Zervos, a former "Apprentice" contestant, filed a lawsuit against Trump in January 2017 in which she alleged that Trump defamed her in 2016 after she said he sexually assaulted her in 2007.Trump's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, is appealing the March 20 ruling by New York Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Schecter, who allowed the case to go forward. He wants the appellate court to revisit the matter of whether the Constitution's Supremacy Clause bars a state court from hearing an action against a sitting president -- what would be considered immunity, because it would make the President immune from suit. Schecter ruled it does not. Kasowitz also argues that Schecter erred in denying the President's motion to dismiss or delay the case on First Amendment grounds.Kasowitz said his motion should be granted on the grounds that New York and federal law both mandate a stay pending appeal, that proceeding with the case could irreparably harm Trump, and that the temporary suspension being sought was not designed to delay the case. But the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court denied his motion in a one-page ruling."We look forward to proving Ms. Zervos's claim that defendant lied when he maliciously attacked her for reporting his sexually abusive behavior," said Zervos' attorney, Mariann Meier Wang.
