SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Republicans in Congress have one final option to challenge the 2020 presidential election outcome. Still, an expert from UC San Diego says it's "entirely impossible" that it would succeed.On Jan. 6, both houses of Congress will meet to vote on the Electoral College results. It's a Constitutional formality that gives Congress the ultimate, final say in who will be the next president."Normally, this is what marks an election as over," says UC San Diego Political Science Department Chair Thad Kousser. "But with this year, everything is different."If one Representative and one Senator object to the Electoral College results during that vote, both houses have to go to their separate chambers and vote on the objection. If both agree to the objection, electoral votes can be thrown out.Alabama Republican Rep. Mo Brooks has already said he will object. He's looking for a Senator to join him."In my judgment, if only lawful votes cast by eligible American citizens are counted, President Trump handily won the electoral college and a second term as president," Brooks said in a speech to the House of Representatives on Dec 3.In that speech, he claimed, without presenting evidence, that millions of non-citizens voted in the election in several states."As such, it is my duty, under the U.S. Constitution, on January 6th, if the required one Senator will join me, to object to and later vote to reject electoral college submissions from states whose election systems are so badly flawed as to render their vote submissions unreliable, untrustworthy, and unworthy of acceptance," he said.Even if he files the objection, Kousser says it's just a political stunt."It's entirely impossible that the Democratic-controlled House will object to (electoral votes)," says Kousser. "And it's very unlikely the Republican-held Senate will as well."Kousser says moderate Republicans in the Senate, like Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney, and Susan Collins, have already said they won't vote to reject electoral results.Kousser believes Brooks' objection and any support it receives is a way to pander to outgoing President Trump, who still has control over a large following and can impact future Republican elections.Kousser says it would also lay the groundwork for another four years of political divisiveness in Washington, D.C."It's really about partisan gain," he says. "I think you have one side that wants to use every tool in its toolbox to de-legitimize the winner of this election, no matter what the costs."Democrats in the House filed similar objections in 2001, 2005, and 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue responded after a man reportedly got his hand stuck in an industrial tortilla press Thursday night.According to the department, the incident happened just after 5:30 at Tortillera La Perla on the 3100 block of National Avenue in San Diego.The man has been carried out of the factory, but a piece of the equipment is reportedly still stuck to the man's hand. His condition is unclear at this time. Also unclear is how the man got his hand stuck in the press. 507

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County avoided being on the state's monitoring list for the third consecutive day on Friday, which should allow the county to be removed from the list.Friday, the county reported a calculated case rate of 96.3, below the state's threshold of 100 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people over 14 days. Despite this, the county said Friday, "the state said today that it will review its data before removing San Diego County from the list."San Diego County has remained within the necessary thresholds of California's other five monitoring metrics:The county could be placed back on the list if it posts three straight days over the state thresholds once again.If or when the county is removed from the list, officials say the region shouldn't expect an immediate return to normal. California is not planning on issuing any further business reopening guidance and county officials have said that no new business sectors are scheduled to reopen if the county gets off the list."The goal of our exercise is not to get off the state's monitoring list and get our case count below that, the goal is to have it remain below that," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Thursday. "And we have to avoid the temptation or mindset that if tomorrow's numbers are under 100 that somehow we feel like we've made it, that we're done, we can go back to normal ... we want to avoid the seesaw of up and down, opened or closed."But part of the uncertainty is the state hasn't clearly outlined what happens after a county falls off the watch list. Mayor Kevin Faulconer sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting guidance on how counties proceed after they fulfill the requirements to get off the list."No process currently exists for restarting other activities, such as gyms and fitness centers, places of worship, non-essential office workplaces, personal care services, barber shops and salons, shopping malls, and higher education, all of which have been restricted to outdoor operations," Faulconer's letter read. "The lack of a consistent process for these businesses, with logical, data-driven triggers, exacerbates an increasingly difficult economic situation, and undermines the credibility of and compliance with the State's public health order."Schools, however, would be the next sector to see some sort of reopening. In-person classes at schools 7th- through 12th-grade can resume after San Diego County stays off the state watch list for another 14 consecutive days — depending on school district plans. This could mean students are able to return to the classroom before the end of the month.So far, 56 local elementary schools have also filed waivers with the county to return to classrooms early.Last month, California released guidance on how schools can resume in-person this fall if approved, including measures regarding face coverings, physical and distance learning requirements, testing needs and contact tracing, and physical distancing.Those guidelines also included when schools would be required to go back to distance learning:Schools should consult public health officer first if a classroom needs to go home because of a positive caseA classroom goes to distance learning if there is a confirmed caseA school goes to distance learning if multiple classrooms have cases or more than 5% of a school is positiveA district goes to distance learning if 25% of a district's schools are closed within two weeksSchools that have already reopened for in-person instruction would not be required to close again if the county is placed back on the watch list. That decision will be made on a school by school basis.Friday, the county reported 406 new coronavirus cases out of 9,508 reported tests, bringing the region's total to 34,065 cases, and seven new deaths.There have also been four new community outbreaks in the county: two in businesses, one in a restaurant-bar, and one in a food processing setting. The company says the median home value in San Diego currently sits at 1,500, rising just over one percent year-over-year. According to Zillow, at this time last year, home values were growing by about 6.1 percent. San Diego’s housing inventory also increased over the last year, jumping six percent. According to the site, there are 531 more homes on the market than last July. In the rest of the U.S., the median home is worth 9,000, up 5.2 percent from a year ago. By this time last year, home values in the U.S. rose at 7.7 percent. Despite the slowing trend, Zillow says home values are still growing in 48 of the top 50 markets. Zillow says San Jose and San Francisco are the exceptions, indicating stabilizing values following a period of extreme growth. 906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County has seen two flu deaths and more than twice the unusual number of illnesses so far this season, health officials reported Wednesday. County Health and Human Services officials said the number of confirmed flu cases is more than double the past three-year average, putting this year on par with the severe 2017-2018 flu season. Seventy-seven San Diego County residents died of flu complications last season. Almost 10,000 became ill. More than 235 cases of flu were confirmed by Sept. 28, compared to 67 at this time last flu season. “People should get vaccinated now to avoid getting sick and infecting others,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available throughout the region.” The flu shot is recommended for everyone over six months old. It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop, according to health officials. Anyone who needs the vaccine and does not have health insurance can go to a County public health center.
