The American Red Cross is now checking all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies, instead of just searching for recovered patients. The organization is calling it a “game changer.”“We can then not only inform that donor of the testing results that we've identified COVID-19 antibodies in their blood, but also use that product as convalescent plasma to help patients who are ill with COVID-19 in the hospital,” said Dr. Pampee Young, Chief Medical Officer at the American Red Cross.Early results from the National Institutes for Health show the plasma can make a big difference for severely sick COVID-19 patients. And data from these new tests will help those researchers working to better understand the virus. The Red Cross says the need for whole blood donors is constant, but plasma is more unpredictable.Over the summer, plasma supplies ran low after unprecedented infections and demand in some states. Now, they're asking more donors to step up to restock for another potential surge in the fall and winter.“Because we can’t predict the demand, we want to ensure that we have enough inventory, because what really saves lives are the units that are on the shelf, not something that we need to collect once we realize there’s a need,” said Young. The Red Cross has taken additional safety steps during the pandemic. That includes making an appointment. You can sign up online at RedCrossBlood.org or by using the blood donor app. 1444
Tennis star Venus Williams has reached a settlement in the wrongful death suit centered around a fatal car accident, according to court documents. The accident, in which the other driver's Hyundai Accent crashed into Williams' Toyota Sequoia, resulted in the death of Jerome Barson two weeks later. His wife, Linda, was driving and was injured when the crash happened at an intersection in Palm Beach Gardens.Court filings from last week show that the case was dismissed with prejudice after a settlement was reached between Williams and Barson's estate, but the settlement amount was not listed. No charges were filed against the tennis star and a second driver over the crash in June 2017, Florida authorities said.An investigation supported by video surveillance showed Williams did not violate the other driver's right of way, the Palm Beach Gardens Police said in an investigative report obtained by CNN affiliate WPBF."Based upon this investigation and relevant Florida state statutes, no charges will be filed in this case," the report said. 1054
Tell us what you want, what you really, really want, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.Spice Girls member Mel B appeared on the daytime talk show "The Real" Tuesday and sparked speculation that the group would be performing at the upcoming royal wedding in May.The hubbub began when co-host Loni Love asked Mel B if she knew anyone who would be attending."I'm going," Mel B said quietly. The audience cheered as the co-hosts of the show exclaimed at the news.Things got really hectic when Love asked if the Spice Girls would be performing."I swear I'm just like..." Mel B started, before Love jumped in and said, "Yes, they are performing! Yes!""I need to go," Mel B said after throwing into the air the papers she was holding. "You're going to get me fired! I'm going to be fired!"She then tried to backtrack."Let's not talk about it anymore," Scary Spice said. "Let's pretend that I never said that."Fans were already buzzing about the possibility of a Spice Girls reunion after a group photo was published of the members having lunch together at Geri Halliwell Horner's house recently.Mel B told the women of "The Real" it was the first time in years that all five members had been together. She said their former manager, Simon Fuller, also joined them. The picture wasn't even supposed to go public, Mel B said."First of all, none of us were meant to post that picture," she said. "We all just took pictures, you know like, candidly. So when I saw Victoria post the picture, I was like, 'Noooo!' I didn't get the lighting right, my makeup wasn't on." 1563
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Americans Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice and British-born scientist Michael Houghton have won the 2020 Nobel Prize in medicine for their discovery of the hepatitis C virus. The World Health Organization estimates there are over 70 million cases of hepatitis worldwide and 400,000 deaths each year. The disease is chronic and a major cause of liver inflammation and cancer. The Nobel committee says, “thanks to their discovery, highly sensitive blood tests for the virus are now available," a development that has greatly reduced the chances of getting hepatitis C through blood transfusions. The medicine prize carries particular significance this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has highlighted the importance of medical research. 769
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. -- A Michigan police officer is being called a hero after the harrowing rescue of a 3-week-old girl was caught on the officer's dashcam.Just before 11 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to a home in Sterling Heights on a report of an infant not breathing.Officer Cameron Maciejewski was the first to arrive and jumped into action. The officer was met by the family outside the home and took the baby, who was not breathing, into his arms.Officer Maciejewski is seen on video calmly taking the baby in his arms and performs back thrusts in an attempt to clear her airways. After a few seconds, the baby coughs up the obstruction and begins the cry.The baby was then turned over to the Sterling Heights Fire Department and transported to the hospital for evaluation.“If it wasn’t for Ofc. Maciejewski’s quick, calm, lifesaving actions, the outcome of this incident could have been tragically different. Not only did the officer save the baby, but the officer did an outstanding job consoling the family,” said police in a statement. This story was originally published by staff at WXYZ. 1116
