 BEIJING, March 22 -- Followings are regions set to be new driving force for China's economy.Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regionXinjiang literally means "New Frontier", and it is promising to be a new economic frontier in China's northwestern areas. Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has abundant oil reserves and it is the largest natural gas-producing region in China. An economic development plan for Xinjiang is expected to come out soon. It will emphasize use of Xinjiang's advantageous resources, including petrochemicals, coal, non-ferrous metals and agriculture. The investment is likely to rise steadily over the next three years, driven by increased financial support from central government and neighboring provinces, and large-scale investment for key projects from State-owned companies. The rising tourism industry will also be a contributor to Xinjiang's economic growth.Tibet autonomous regionThe Tibet autonomous region is becoming another hotspot in China's regional economic development. The plateau region was traditionally dependent on farming and herding. Recently Tibet laid out a plan to explore its mineral resources, while pledging to stick to rational exploitation and minimizing the damage to the natural environment. The government announced plans to achieve "leapfrog development" in Tibet in January, including building the region into a "strategic reserve of natural resources" with the aim of reducing poverty among the Tibetan people. Tibet has more than 3,000 proven mineral reserves and it has China's biggest proven chromium and copper deposits. According to the plan, mineral resources will contribute at least 30 percent to the regional GDP over the next 10 years. Tourism will continue to play a significant role in supporting the economy.

HEFEI, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Nine people were killed in a traffic accident in east China's Anhui Province Wednesday, police said.A five-seat minibus, carrying nine people, made a head-on collision with a passenger bus with seven people onboard at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mengcheng County of Bozhou City.The minibus was running on the wrong lane when the accident took place, police said.Seven of those on the minibus were killed at the site and two others died later in hospital after first-aid efforts failed.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday called on the Chinese people to pool their strength and resources to make sure the Shanghai World Expo a success.     With just 106 days to go before the Expo opening on May 1, Hu visited the Expo site Friday during an inspection tour in Shanghai.     "Hosting the World Expo is not only a significant event of Shanghai, but also of the whole nation," he said, noting it was both the responsibility of Shanghai and the whole country to hold a successful Expo. BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese political advisor said here Thursday that it was "groundless" that some foreign media reports alleged China had hidden part of defense budget.Jia Yong, a member of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks when commenting on some foreign media reports that part of China's military expenditure might have gone hidden as the country's defense budget growth slowed to 7.5 percent this year.Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the CPPCC National Committee, the top political advisory body, Jia called such reports were merely meant to draw more attention.China publishes the national defense white paper every two years, which is more detailed in military expenditure than many other countries, Jia said.The per capita defense budget of China is the lowest among the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, and the country has dispatched the most servicemen and police officers for peacekeeping missions, Jia said.The Chinese government revealed last week that the country plans to increase its defense budget by 7.5 percent in 2010, compared with last year's 14.9 percent, to 532.115 billion yuan (about 78 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police nationwide were urged Friday to tighten security and step up safety overhaul during the Chinese Lunar New Year and be "ready to handle emergencies to prevent serious accidents."A circular from the Ministry of Public Security told local police authorities to increase scrutiny of fireworks parties, trade fairs, lantern shows, and temple fairs during the Spring Festival holiday which starts Saturday.It said the police should assist in keeping public and traffic order around large events' venues and be ready to handle crime and emergencies.Efforts should be made to strengthen security measures around train stations. Police authorities must release "safety tips" to the public through radio, newspapers and cell phone messages, it said.More than 10,000 large events, including traditional temple fairs, will be held across the country during the seven-day holiday, with more than 320 events expected to attract more than 10,000 people each.The latest ministry statistics show police solved nearly 1,200 homicide cases and 915 human trafficking cases last month.Police also arrested nearly 470 suspects for using telephones to scam or defraud people in January, saving 3.45 million yuan (507,000 U.S. dollars) in economic losses.Last month, the police busted nearly 2,000 bases for illegal fireworks' manufacture, sale, or transportation.The Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, falls on Sunday. It is the most important annual Chinese festival, with family reunions, much fun and plenty of eating.
