GREENWOOD, Ind. -- There's nothing like a cold ice cream cone on a hot day. On Wednesday, a large group of second grade students from Greenwood Schools got to take a field trip over to a local ice cream shop after reaching their reading goals. The students who earned 50 Accelerated Reading (AR) points got the sweet treat from Mrs. Curl's Ice Cream Shop. Fifty points is the equivalent of reading 100 books -- quite the accomplishment for these young readers. "This year we had more kids than ever before," said teacher Amber Ploutz in a Facebook post. "So you can imagine it was quite a sight, all of us walking down."As the group of students crossed the city streets, they walked past a group of construction workers. Ploutz said one of the workers out front heard that the students were being treated to ice cream for reaching their reading goals. Instead of just congratulating the students, he took it a step forward and really made their day."He paid for all 54 kids' ice cream cones," said Ploutz. "He didn't want any recognition and said he did it because he was proud of all the hard work they put into school and told them to keep up the great reading."In return, Mrs. Curl's Ice Cream Shop paid that man's good deed forward. The shop gave out free drinks and ice cream to all members of the road crew and also to the police officers helping direct traffic in the area. The worker didn't want any recognition for his random act of kindness, and only gave students his nickname, to remain anonymous. He said people call him, Bub."So thank you, Bub," said Ploutz. "Today was a day these kiddos and I will never forget."   1686

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. -- A local sheriff’s department has issued a warning to parents about a marijuana candy that seems to be making the rounds. The HTC-infused gummies were recently found by deputies in Hancock County, Ind.“They are gummy candy squares, but not your average fruit snacks,” the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department shared in a Facebook post Wednesday morning. “These are THC gummies.”If you look closely, you can see the letters THC printed on each piece of sugar-coated “candy.”“If you come across these, contact your local law enforcement office,” the department’s post said. The drug tip line in Hancock County is 317-477-DRUG.  658

HOLLISTER, Calif. (AP) — A magnitude-4.7 earthquake has struck a wilderness area of central California. The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor occurred at 12:42 p.m. Tuesday and was centered about 16 miles (25 kilometers) southeast of Hollister. The quake occurred at a depth of 6 miles (9.6 kilometers). The epicenter area is in a rugged mountain range, with agricultural areas to the west.Late Monday, the San Francisco Bay Area was rattled by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. That quake was center near Pleasant Hill, northeast of Oakland but was felt widely.More than 67,000 people posted to the U.S. Geological Survey's citizen reporting web page.Veteran seismologist Lucy Jones says the two quakes are too far apart to be related. 741

GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. humanitarian office says needs for assistance have ballooned to unprecedented levels this year because of COVID-19, projecting that a staggering 235 million people will require help in 2021.This comes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and global challenges, including conflicts, forced migration, and the impact of global warming.“The humanitarian system again proved its worth in 2020, delivering food, medicines, shelter, education, and other essentials to tens of millions of people,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a press release. “But the crisis is far from over. Humanitarian aid budgets face dire shortfalls as the impact of the global pandemic continues to worsen. Together, we must mobilize resources and stand in solidarity with people in their darkest hour of need.”The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, expects a 40% increase in the number of people in need of such assistance in 2021 compared to this year.OCHA made the projections in its latest annual Global Humanitarian Overview on Tuesday, saying its hopes to reach 160 million of those people in need will cost billion. Still, OCHA says they’ve only raised billion thus far.UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock told a U.N. briefing that the U.N. appeal could raise billion by the end of the year, which according to the Associated Press, is billion more than last year.“We can let 2021 be the year of the grand reversal – the unraveling of 40 years of progress – or we can work together to make sure we all find a way out of this pandemic,” Lowcock said. 1621
