SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo's 7-month-old endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from her mother's pouch. The young "joey" has not been named, but is beginning to spend more time outside her mom, Polly, according to zoo officials.“The joey, right now, cannot get enough things in her mouth,” said Breanne Barney, keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “She’s constantly trying to eat leaves, greens, various vegetables, corn—even chewing on moms’ ears, tail, hands and feet!”The little kangaroo doesn't stray far from her mom though, as she learns to climb and maneuver outside of the pouch, the zoo says.Matschie’s tree kangaroos have an estimated gestation period of about 45 days and are about the size of a jelly bean when born. Once born, they crawl back into their mom's pouch and attach to a nipple to gain nourishment and grow. Tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for a few months.“Polly is an excellent mother, and consistently grooming her little one,” Barney said. “Due to their small population numbers, this joey provides a spark of hope for the future of this species.”The kangaroos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species. There are less than 2,500 of the kangaroos in their native habitats of Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula.Unfortunately, they are hunted by humans for food and trade, according to the zoo. The zoo's Matschie’s tree kangaroos came to the Safari Park’s Walkabout Australia in 2018 as part of a Species Survival Plan breeding program. 1573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Pride is calling for video submissions that will be incorporated into their live-streamed event in July, in lieu of in-person gatherings. They are requesting people submit 15-30 second videos describing what Pride means to them. “We’ve learned as a movement and community that sharing personal stories is what pulls at hearts and minds and can help shape policy,” said Fernando Lopez, the Executive Director of SD Pride. But he also said he wants to make sure that even though the event will be virtual, it still creates a place for the LGBT community to express themselves. “What we’re doing is asking everyone to participate,” said Lopez. “One of the things that makes Pride special and unique is that we ask everyone from all walks of life to come together and celebrate diversity and to be together in community. We’re trying to do that but do it in a different way.” The videos will be incorporated into their live broadcast on July 18. As a year-round educational and advocacy organization, Lopez said SD Pride has already moved a lot of its events online. In doing so, he said they’ve actually been able to expand their reach. “When we’d have an educational forum, you’d get 40-80 people in a room,” he estimated. Now he says they are drawing thousands of people to their online forums.“We’re producing more programming than we have ever before and reaching more people than we ever have before,” said Lopez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's new dive coaster has shed its "Mako" moniker and will now nod to another of the park's coolest animals.SeaWorld announced Tuesday its dive coaster will be called "Emperor," a nod to Emperor penguins. The name is "a tribute to the Emperor penguins’ journey from chilly, frosted cliffs to their deep dive into the depths of the ocean," the park says.The ride will still be modeled after SeaWorld's other "Mako" coasters, taking riders more than 150 feet high, before sending them into a 143-foot face-down drop and through loops and turns at up to 60 miles per hour. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - South Bay Pentecostal Church has been involved in a legal battle since May regarding worshiping indoors, and officials think Friday could be the light at the end of the tunnel.Senior Pastor Arthur Hodges believes during a motions hearing Friday morning the church will be granted permission to reopen indoors.His hope comes from the latest rulings by several judges.On Dec. 3, the Supreme Court ruled places of worship in New York could reopen, saying restrictions meant to curb the pandemic violated the First Amendment of the Constitution.After that ruling, the high court issued an unsigned order to California judges to reconsider Gov. Gavin Newsom's restrictions.On Wednesday, a judge ruled restaurants could reopen indoors in San Diego."That absolutely makes us hopeful, and I've told restaurateurs, business owners, whatever, we're fighting for you, too. Now we have a bigger gun than they do. We've got the Constitution, OK; they don't have that. but they're finding ways to get around it with the right to assemble," Hodges said.Hodges said back in May their initial lawsuit was voted down 5-4 by the Supreme Court.Hodges believes under a high court that shifted majority when Judge Amy Coney Barrett replaced the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg, they will prevail."If religious liberties are lost, you can mark it down your personal liberties are going to be lost," Hodges said, arguing this lawsuit is to protect more than places of worship.Hodges said if they win this legal battle it will pave the way for the rest of the country. 1563

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Southern California home sales are seeing a significant drop, according to a new report by CoreLogic. In San Diego County, home sales are down more than eight percent year-over-year. Despite a dip in sales, home prices rose 2.6 percent from February of 2018 to February of 2019.The median home price in February was 9,000, CoreLogic reports. The report points out that total SoCal home sales in February were the lowest since February of 2008, when only 10,777 homes were sold. According to the report, sales have fallen on a year-over-year basis for the last seven consecutive months.
