SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Legendary San Diego anchorman Jack White has passed away. White spent more than 30 years in America’s Finest City as a reporter and anchor at KGTV 10News.White grew up in Oceanside and graduated from Oceanside High School in 1957. He was even inducted into the school’s hall of fame for his contribution to the arts.White began his broadcasting career on the radio in the early 1960s before moving to TV where he spent 34 years at KGTV.On November 14, 2010, the City of San Diego declared Jack White Day. The county made a similar declaration. Many who worked with him called him a gentleman and a great coworker. After leaving 10News, White worked as a technical advisor on the movie “Anchorman.”White covered every story there was to be covered in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's easier than ever to find a place to rent on a short-term basis, anywhere in the world.But this relatively new business model has touched off a whole new way of doing business for another industry: the sex trade.Law enforcement globally is reporting a rise in pop-up brothels. It's bringing this issue out into the light. It tells the shocking true story of a young woman named Ana who spent nine months as a sex slave in a series of pop-up brothels in Ireland. Ana was snatched off the streets of London in broad daylight.According to statistics, that's rare. But what happened to Ana once she was in the hands of the sex traffickers, was not."Doing Money" producer Mike Dormer spoke to 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt, describing the horror Ana endured.RELATED: New CA Medical Board filing on Del Mar doctor accused of prowling"Within 12 hours she was in Ireland in a brothel," Dormer said.Dormer says Ana, and all those like her, are entrapped physically and mentally."Once they've been moved ... they have no friends, no money, no clothes, no passport, no way to escape," Dormer describes.Much like Ana’s reality overseas, U.S. Department of Justice reports reveal the victims are often kept cold, sedated with drugs, and hungry. If they don't meet their quota, they don't eat. Girls are moved by the pimps from one short-term rental to another to both evade being caught by law enforcement and to keep the girls advertised as new in town.It's happening in San Diego...The global issue of pop-up brothels is alive and well in San Diego. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Matzger, of the San Diego Sex Trafficking Task Force, confirms it's happening locally. Last year alone in San Diego, human trafficking was an 0-million industry."We have it going on in massage parlors, hotels ... and we also have it going on in short-term vacation rentals, apartments, condos, and homes," Matzger said.The task force has busted a pop-up brothel operating out of an upscale condo in Mission Valley. Two people were convicted of pimping and pandering and an adult was rescued. She had been trafficked to San Diego from the east coast through Los Angeles. They had two people inside running the computers and security portion of it," the member said. We are not identifying the task force member. "They had a call center, they would give the johns a code to enter the building."He says it all starts on the internet where the girls are advertised for sex. Matzger says the girls are expected to bring in the bucks."Ten times a day. Ten times a night. They work all night long," Matzger says.And they're isolated and totally under the fist of her traffickers"She's dependent on them for where she sleeps, what she eats, when she eats, and when she sleeps. They were convicted and sentenced to three years.Her testimony helped secure the passing of the first Human Trafficking and Exploitation Act in the U.K in over a hundred years. Experts say we have a long way to go and statistics back that up. Worldwide, almost five million women and girls endured forced sexual exploitation last year.In San Diego, the Sex Trafficking Task Force — a combination of positions from members of the DOJ, the San Diego District Attorney's Office, and San Diego Police Department — has created an aggressive front taking on sex trafficking in a county that attracts it because of tourism.Matzger says, "large gatherings such as Comic-Con, sporting events, and other venues that attract tourists ... also attract those looking to buy sex." 4736

King tides occur when there is an alignment of the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s a chance for the community to get a behind-the-scenes look into local policing. The program, Inside SDPD, held a few times a year, aims to bridge the gap between the community and local law enforcement. As seen through local demonstrations against police brutality and rogue officers, there can be a divide that exists between law enforcement and the public. “We’re not here to say we hate all police, that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here to say that law enforcement who is acting outside the bounds of justice, equality, equity… those officers need to be fired. They need to be arrested. They need to be jailed if need be,” said Yusef Miller of the Racial Justice Coalition during an October demonstration in San Diego.There is one thing both sides agree on: wanting to build better relationships. San Diego Police see Inside SDPD as helping with that goal. It's hosted in coordination with the San Diego Police Foundation. The program introduces participants into various aspects of policing, including Taser use, use of force simulations, traffic stops, and K9 demonstrations. The goal is to make situations as realistic as possible. For first-time participant Helen Auerbach, it was eye-opening. “Certainty with the body cameras and the shootings. When you see it from one angle and you see the same thing from a different angle, it’s a completely different scenario,” she said. Teenager Logan Miller also participated. “You’re told it’s a simulation, but when you have the props… and the sound [is] very, very loud and you’re actually being interacted with on screen… again the world I keep saying [is] realistic. You are submerged in that situation,” Miller said.Team 10 asked Assistant San Diego Police Chief Paul Connelly what he would say to critics of the department. “I would just say keep an open mind. We have a very difficult job to do,” he said. In an era where community members are demanding transparency, he said the department continues to work toward that goal. “That’s something the San Diego Police Department is really striving to do. For instance, all our policies and procedures can be found on our website. And we hold events like these to invite the community out so they can see exactly how we’re trained.” Auerbach, who found out about the event through an online neighborhood website, recommends the program. “I really thing everyone should do this. I think every child should be exposed to this in school,” Auerbach said. The next "Inside SDPD" event is in December, focused specifically on K9s. There is a suggested donation for the program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Investors are watching carefully to see if interest rates keep dropping, or if they may eventually dip below zero in the United States.Recently, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan said it's a possibility, as rates have remained historically low for the past few years.In San Diego, the results of a negative interest rate would be good news for some and bad news for others."Low rates are a double-edged sword," says Dennis Brewster of SagePoint Financial. "If you're a borrower, if you're looking to buy a house today, mortgage rates have never been lower. But if you're a saver and you have money in the bank or in a CD, your rates are pretty poor."Brewster says the interest rate tends to drop when growth in the US is slow, both for the population and the Gross Domestic Product. He says that's what's happening now, as the baby boomer generation is getting older and later generations have fewer children. Brewster says slower population growth leads to slower economic growth because there are fewer people in the workforce, which means company production is down, and so is spending. He says that is happening despite record low unemployment.As for negative interest, Brewster says the average San Diego shouldn't worry since it's unlikely to happen."I wouldn't change your long term plans," he says.
