SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new program at three San Diego-area community colleges is hoping to bridge the gap between minority students and their teachers.The Deber Program at Mesa, Southwestern, and City colleges hopes to encourage more bilingual people to become teachers."We don't have enough people of color in the classrooms," said Laurie Lorence, Teacher Education Director at Mesa College.The program will help recruit bilingual college students who want to become teachers. It will assist them throughout their college careers with applications, transfers, testing, and mentoring."We're hoping a lot of students want to give back to their community and reach down to give them a hand up," said Lorence.Right now, there's a wide disparity between the number of minority teachers and students of color in San Diego.According to the San Diego County Office of Education, 69% of students in local schools are students of color. But only 26.3% of teachers identify themselves as teachers of color. Bridging that gap can help minority students succeed."A student can look up at the teacher and say, 'Wow, if that person's done it, maybe I can too,'" said Lorence.For Karina Vidro, one of the students already in the Deber Program, the help it provides is vital."I know where I want to be, but I don't know all the details in between," she said. "So knowing that someone is going to be there to support me in that direction is fantastic."The Deber Program is funded through a five-year grant from San Diego State University. Lorence says the first few years will focus on Hispanic and LatinX students. They plan to expand to other minority groups after that. 1662

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Kensington sake bar and restaurant is getting creative to survive the latest COVID-19 shutdown orders.Like for so many businesses, the pandemic has been served up economic pain at Tanuki Sake Bar, where revenues have been cut in half.The most recent COVID-19 shutdown orders were a gut punch for Kai Ishii’s father, who opened the restaurant more than two years ago."Definitely disappointment on his part, and worry for his employees and the business," said Ishii.With the restaurant being takeout only, Ishii's family can only afford hours for one of their four servers."The biggest thing is the uncertainty of what’s next," said Ishii.What Ishii did do next is inspired partly from fast food."Definitely got some inspiration from In-N-Out, when they ask you, 'Do you want to eat in the car or take it home?"" said Ishii.But he knows the concept of in-car dining would only go so far."We wanted to give them something to occupy their attention," said Ishii.So Ishii bought an 18-foot-tall movie screen and a projector, and set them up in their modest parking lot — just 6 spaces. Last weekend, the sake bar started offering a pop-up Japanese movies and anime to go with dinner."We found a way to put audio in the car, so it's a lot more immersive," said Ishii.Each car can use wireless speakers for sound. The dinner for two and movie costs .Their first screening Saturday was sold out, and so is another screening later this week. Ishii is hoping to show two or three films a week, and its not just about the extra revenue."We have a lot of wonderful loyal customers, and we’re hoping the big screen will add to that ... create foot traffic, create buzz with the cars driving by and bring more attention for the restaurant and takeout orders ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A hearing that will decide where to place the so-called “bolder than most” rapist is set to take place in October.According to documents sent to 10News, the Department of State Hospitals proposed that Alvin Quarles live at 43050 Desert Ranch Road in Jacumba Hot Springs.Quarles was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison in 1989 after being convicted of attacking and raping four women.RELATED: Alvin Quarles, 'Bolder than Most' rapist, to be released from prisonIn 2013, Quarles became eligible for parole but was instead transferred to a state hospital because one of his victims objected.He earned his nickname because he made his victim’s male partners watch or participate in the sex crimes.“I don’t believe he’s suitable for release at this time,” Dr. Cecilia Groman, who created a report on Quarles’ rehabilitation, testified at a release hearing.RELATED: 'Bolder than most' rapist up for conditional releaseBefore the placement is finalized, the public is able to comment on the proposed location through September 5. San Diego (KGTV) - A San Diego man claims San Diego County Sheriff deputies roughed him up in jail and the incident was caught on camera.He’s calling the deputies' actions an abuse of power.“I’m actually pissed,” said Joshua Strode. “I’m actually very angry.”San Diego State University police arrested Strode back in June for being drunk in public, something he denies.Strode was taken to San Diego Central Jail. He claimed he was inside the first-floor intake area when deputies came at him from all directions.“I kept on trying to tell them, 'You’re hurting me badly, please stop," he said.A video given to Team 10 from inside the jail shows Strode’s encounter with law enforcement. 692

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge has ordered a man charged with attacking and stabbing two women to stand trial. A preliminary hearing was held Tuesday for Patrick Douglas, 51.Douglas is charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with two stabbings in El Cajon and La Mesa on the same day.Police in La Mesa said a female Frito Lay delivery driver, later identified as 35-year-old Dina Hammond, staggered into a 7-Eleven where she had just made a delivery after being stabbed several times.RELATED: Pursuit suspect arrested for pair of stabbings in La Mesa, El Cajon?Hammond was rushed to the hospital in stable condition following the stabbing.Shortly after, Police in El Cajon received a call after a woman was found with stab wounds at a strip mall. The woman, later identified as Shawntey Palmer, was also in stable condition after being taken to the hospital.After the stabbings, Douglas led police on a chase after a Mercedes-Benz matching the description of his car was spotted.During the pursuit, Douglas reached speeds of more than 100 miles-per-hour before the car was found abandoned.Douglas was eventually located and arrested. 1161
