As the polar ice caps retreat, polar bears could struggle to survive by the end of this century, a number of university researchers wrote in a study published in the Nature Climate Change journal.The study looked at a number of sub-species of polar bears who live in the arctic and how they have adapted to reduced sea ice from 1979 to 2016. The group of researchers said that all but a few sub-species of polar bears will be able to reproduce and survive given projected conditions by 2100.Polar bears use sea ice to capture seals for food. When sea ice erodes for the summer, polar bears fast. Although polar bears are capable of fasting for months, there are limits to how long the bears can go without food.The researchers examined energy needs of polar bears, and that the amount of time polar bears would fast would lengthen to a point that makes it too challenging to survive and reproduce.While resting female polar bears can generally fast for longer periods of time, reproducing females, males and cubs all require shorter fasting periods, the research found.“Avoiding continued sea-ice decline requires aggressively mitigating greenhouse gas rise,” the researchers wrote, “and our results explicitly describe the costs to polar bears of avoiding that mitigation.”To illustrate how much sea ice is being lost, NOAA is projecting that the arctic could have ice-free summers by 2042.Scientists have long discussed the possibility that polar bears could become nearly extinct by the end of the century. Beyond reducing carbon emissions, proposals have included relocating cubs to areas of the Arctic expected to retain higher levels of sea ice have been proposed. As the nationwide unemployment rate continues to sit in unprecedented territory, the dramatic job loss numbers also mean millions of Americans have suddenly found themselves without health insurance.Experts call it a cruel twist during the pandemic, meaning many people who get sick with COVID-19 may not get the health care help they need because they don’t have coverage.“We have massive numbers of people who are worried about their health but who no longer have coverage,” said Michelle Johnson, who oversees the nonprofit Tennessee Justice Center.Johnson says calls to her organization have increased dramatically in the last few months as Americans are finding themselves uninsured after losing their jobs due to COVID-19.“We’re just going to continue seeing people who are losing their insurance,” she said.According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly 27 million people in the United States may have lost employer-sponsored insurance. Roughly half of Americans receive health insurance through their jobs. And while programs like COBRA allow people who have been laid off to continue their coverage, many can’t afford to pay those costs with no income.Johnson says the problem is particularly troubling in state’s like hers where Medicaid expansion already meant there were hundreds of thousands of residents who were uninsured.She hopes the federal government might consider opening enrollment in the Affordable Care Act to help those who have suddenly lost coverage.Johnson’s biggest concern though, is the consequences may prove deadly as those without coverage now avoid trips to the doctor or emergency room for fear of getting stuck with bills they can’t afford.“People will delay getting the care they need because they’re worried about being a financial burden,” said Johnson. 1804

As she watches her three boys play in the backyard, Acacia Clark can’t help but be consumed by an overwhelming sense of anxiety as she thinks ahead to the coming school year.It’s been a long four months for Clark and her husband, who are both trying to juggle full-time jobs, while at the same time, raise their young kids who haven’t been inside a classroom since March.“My focus on my work has been abysmal,” Clark said, as one of her 6-year-old twin boys asks her for a popsicle. “I’ll get in a few minutes here or there, but it’s been very stressful.”The COVID-19 outbreak meant schools in Newton, Massachusetts, where this family resides, had to be shut down. Across the country, school districts are carefully weighing their options about reopening in the middle of a pandemic.Clark wants her children to have the daily structure of school back in their lives. However, she's also incredibly concerned about someone in her family catching the virus.“What if one of us gets sick? That means the whole house would get sick. Then, how do we work?” she wondered.That is the reality facing countless families across the country.“It’s more than being stuck between a rock and a hard place, it’s just being stuck in a hard place constantly and not having a light at the end of the tunnel,” she added.Families are now having to juggle it all, while at the same time, making sure their kids don’t fall through the cracks.As some school resume in-person learning, many parents like Clark are worried about what could happen if there’s a sudden outbreak and their child’s school is forced to shut down.“I can either work or be there for me kids; I can’t do both,” she said.Recognizing the impossible predicament the pandemic has placed parents in, Congress passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act back in March. It gives parents two weeks of paid sick leave if you find yourself having to quarantine. Parents also get two weeks of paid sick leave at two-thirds of their regular salary if the child's school or daycare shuts down because of COVID-19. Additionally, it guarantees 10 weeks of leave at two-thirds of their salary if they need to take care of a sick child.But those benefits will run out on December 31.“Employers are recognizing that there has to be a solution. If kids can’t go back to school, parents can’t go back to work full-time,” explained Chris Feudo, an attorney with Foley Hoag in Boston.As the pandemic enters its fifth month in the United States, Feudo says another issue facing parents is that they’ve already exhausted all of their FMLA leave. Because of that, he says parents should talk to their employers as soon as possible if it appears your child’s school or daycare might shut down because of a COVID-19 outbreak.“Come up with a plan and say, ‘This is the most I can do for my employer.’ If you have a thought-out plan, it shows you're being proactive and I think employers will be more responsive to that,” he added.Feudo says if you've run out of FMLA leave and need to ask your boss for more time off to care for family members, it's best to have the conversation in-person, if possible, or via a Zoom or video conference call. He says employers are being more flexible right now because of the outbreak but they need to see that employees are willing to bring up difficult situations before they become major issues.Under federal law, it’s also illegal for employers to retaliate against someone for using FMLA leave.As for Clark, she’s still waiting to find out if her district will have in-person learning this fall and she’s doing her best to manage whatever new challenge the pandemic throws her way.“I don’t know single parents are doing it, especially if they’re trying to bring in a paycheck,” she said. 3762

As we head into cold and flu season, you can expect things will be handled differently at workplaces, schools, day cares and medical offices because of COVID-19.Anyone with symptoms like a runny nose, a cough or sneezing will likely be asked to stay home.“So, I think there's going to be a requirement for any of these symptoms for employee health at the workplace to take a larger role in screening patients probably a lot more testing,” said Dr. Scott Joy, Chief Medical Officer at Englewood Primary Care.Joy spoke with us about how people should handle these symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. He recommends staying home for 24 hours when you have a cold without a fever.If you have a fever, isolate for up to six days or until you've been fever free for a full 24 hours. If you're coughing or sneezing more than four times in an hour, you should probably stay home and see a doctor.“We haven't had a metric like that before, so we're going to experiment with that data point and see what it does to our workforce and our clinic infection control over this season,” said Joy.Joy also reminds people to get the flu shot.A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found people who got the vaccine had 25% fewer episodes of upper respiratory infections than those who didn't. That means fewer sick days from work and fewer doctor visits.The hope is that COVID-19 measures like handwashing, mask wearing and watching your distance will lead to fewer respiratory infections overall. But should you experience those symptoms, you may be directed to urgent care centers instead.The idea is to keep doctor offices sterile, so people with chronic conditions and other issues feel safe coming in to see their primary care physician.“In the last couple of months, people that have been putting off their care, I just diagnosed a gentleman, new diagnosis with pancreatic cancer,” said Joy. “We're detecting breast cancer, heart disease blood pressure that is out of control.”Urgent care centers are equipped with personal protective equipment and are typically faster, and cheaper than a visit to a hospital emergency room. But you should call your doctor's office first to see what they recommend based on your symptoms. 2228
