EL CAJON (CNS) - A man suspected of killing his husband at their Mount Helix home pleaded not guilty Friday to a murder charge.Daniel Scott Jordan, 45, is accused in the slaying of 38-year-old Kevin Powell, a Chula Vista city employee whose body was found in the couple's Carmen Drive residence on Aug. 11.Chula Vista police found Powell's body while conducting a welfare check, sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said. EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) - Students at a private school in El Cajon are scheduled to return to class next month.Parents of children at Foothills Christian Middle School got a letter from the school over the weekend outlining their re-opening plan.According to the letter, the school will re-open September 8th.A local mom contacted 10News concerned about the plan. She didn't give her name because she doesn't want retaliation against her daughter. She was surprised at the September return date."If schools could be open, I would send her to school, if the county said we could do that, I would do that, but they're saying we can't go to school and we should be wearing masks," said the mom.According to the letter, there is a five step plan for reopening:*Regular COVID-19 self-check screening questions*Temperature readings prior to entering campus*Hand hygiene*Environmental Cleaning/Sanitization and Refillable Water Bottle Stations*Face masks/coveringsThe letter states that face coverings will not be required, but will be optional on campus. It goes on to list several reasons, including:*There is a lack of evidence that wearing a face mask prevents COVID-19 transmission in children*Children are not typically trained in their use and there is potential for increased risk of infection with improper mask use*Masks can be irritating and may lead to increased touching of face and eyes*It is impractical for a child to wear a mask properly for the duration of the school dayThe mom who contacted us says this will send mixed messages to her child."What we're telling her at home is completely different than, this is completely opposite of everything we're doing. So it's shocking to her, she's like why wouldn't I wear a mask," said the mom.The letter states wearing a mask will be the personal choice of students or faculty, but there may be some occasions where face coverings are required, like field trips."I wouldn't want her to wear a mask at school and be peer pressured not to, or be made fun of for wearing it," said the mom.As far as social distancing, the letter only states, "we will do our best to encourage physical distancing."The letter asks parents and their child to sign it, agreeing to the terms before returning to school.According to CA's governor, counties on the state's COVID-19 monitoring list cannot open schools for in-person instruction. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man and woman were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2017 shooting death of a man in a botched holdup in the parking lot of a Burlington Coat Factory store in La Mesa, in which they made off with cash and three pairs of shoes taken from the victim. Derrick Eli Henderson, 32, and Kathryn Luwana Williams, 26, were convicted in July of murder and robbery charges for the death of 30-year-old Travis Lewis, who was gunned down on July 20, 2017, outside the Burlington Coat Factory store at 7938 El Cajon Blvd. Jurors deliberated for about two days before convicting Henderson and Williams of the killing, and finding true a special circumstance allegation of committing the killing in the commission of a robbery. The defendants met up with Lewis under the guise of purchasing marijuana from him -- a scheme orchestrated by Williams, who called the victim to arrange the meeting and brought Henderson along as muscle, according to Deputy District Attorney Kristian Trocha. Williams then took shoes the victim had just bought out of the trunk of his car and rifled through Lewis' pockets and took cash as he lay bleeding in the parking lot, but left behind marijuana that he had in his vehicle, Trocha said. In his closing argument, Trocha told the jury that Williams was ``just as responsible as if she pulled the trigger herself.'' Co-defendant Tiesha Miller-Johnson, 34, pleaded guilty to robbery and is slated to be sentenced later this month. Prosecutors said she was the getaway driver. Henderson's attorney, Yahaira Aristy, denied that he was the shooter, while the prosecution claimed that Henderson's DNA was found on the gun and that he told someone else that he ``domed that dude'' when talking about the robbery. Aristy also disputed testimony from Williams that after the shooting, Henderson threatened to kill her if she didn't take Lewis' belongings or if she told anyone about what happened. Williams' attorney, Shervin Samimi, said his client was only there to buy marijuana, and alleged the prosecution was stretching with its claims that she crafted a scheme to rob Lewis. 2397
DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) - An East San Diego County man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of poisoning his wife with Thallium.The woman was taken to a hospital on March 15 with an unknown illness. Deputies said the woman had a level of Thallium in her system that was so high, medical staff believed her exposure was intentional.Thallium is a heavy metal which has been used in rat poison and ant pesticides.Sheriff’s detectives, along with the FBI, NCIS, and San Diego County HazMat, conducted an investigation and believed the woman’s husband was responsible for her poisoning.Race Remington Uto, 27, was booked into Vista Detention Facility.
