LANCASTER, Calif. — A 37-year-old man who was being treated for COVID-19 is accused of killing his 82-year-old hospital roommate while the elderly man was praying.Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department say the younger man, identified as Jesse Martinez, is facing charges of murder with a hate crime enhancement and elder abuse.Martinez and the 82-year-old victim were housed in a two-person room together at Antelope Valley Hospital on December 17 when the attack happened. Both were receiving treatment for COVID-19 symptoms.“The suspect became upset when the victim started to pray. He then struck the victim with an oxygen tank,” reads a statement from the sheriff’s department.The older man died from his injuries the next day. An outbreak of what residents have described as "zombie-like behavior" involving raccoons who bare their teeth, walk on their hind legs and don't seem to be afraid of humans.According to WKBN in Youngstown, police have taken more than a dozen calls about these incidents since the start of March. Resident Robert Coggeshall, speaking to WKBN, said he spotted one while he was walking his dogs. "He would stand up on his hind legs, which I've never seen a raccoon do before, and he would show his teeth and then he would fall over backward and go into almost a comatose condition," he said.Although raccoons are typically nocturnal animals, many of these incidents occurred in broad daylight.In "28 Days Later," the super-infective Rage virus is an evolved form of rabies transmitted from animals to humans, but the Ohio Department of Natural Resources thinks it's more likely this odd raccoon behavior is a side effect of canine distemper.Although the disease's name includes the word "canine," distemper can affect a number of animals with close evolutionary links to the canine genus, including skunks, ferrets, raccoons and even bears. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, distemper "attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems" of infected animals, eventually causing symptoms such as "circling behavior, head tilt, muscle twitches … seizures, and partial or complete paralysis" in its final stages. If this diagnosis is correct, raccoons baring their teeth at Youngstown people and pets aren't threatening to eat their brains -- they're experiencing facial muscle spasms as their nervous systems escape their conscious control.Distemper is not the T-Virus, and it's not transmissible to humans, but it's still pretty scary. (KGTV) - A local company wants to fill the gap of high unemployment among the blind and visually-impaired.While the majority are college-educated, 70 percent are unemployed. San Diego-based company Aira hopes to reverse the trend. The assistive technology service is announcing a new initiative to provide free service through the Aira?Employment Program.Aira uses smart glasses equipped with a camera that streams live video to a remote, human agent. Using the video stream, GPS, and web data, agents offer live, on-demand assistance to people who are blind or visually impaired.Now job-seekers will be able to take advantage of the service for free as they look for employment. Agents will help navigate employment sites, fill out applications, build resumes, and travel to and from meetings with prospective employers. "Besides ignorance of not knowing what a blind person is capable of doing, the accommodation aspect is the other fear and Aira can help bridge a lot of that," said Juan Hernandez, an Aira Software Engineer who is totally blind. With help from the community and national partners, Aira has an ambitious goal of lowering the unemployment number from 70 percent to under 7 percent.By removing barriers, Aira hopes companies will see an opportunity, blind and visually-impaired workers ready to put their vast skills and talents to work.  1436
