President Donald Trump visited Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday which was the site of both peaceful protests and riots last week following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. The protests have mostly been peaceful in the city in the last few days. However, some politicians fear that Trump's visit could stoke embers of emotion and spark more violence in the nights to come.Trump's visit took place against the wishes of both Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and Kenosha Mayor Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian — both Democrats — who say that emotions in the city are still too raw."We want everything to calm down," Antaramian said in a press conference on Monday. "We want to give people an opportunity to talk before the president comes into town."There did not appear to be any violence or unrest upon Trump's arrival. Dozens of his supporters lined streets in Kenosha to see his motorcade, and Blake's family held a community gathering near the site of the shooting.During his visit, Trump praised law enforcement at a security roundtable for keeping peace in the city in recent days, and urged lawmakers in other states to lean on federal support in times of unrest. He also visited with business owners whose properties were damaged or destroyed in riots.Trump said Tuesday that he did not plan to meet with Blake or his family during his visit, saying it would be best if relations with the family were handled "locally." He did say he planned to have a conversation with the family's pastor. The President said Monday that he spoke with the family's pastor in the hopes of setting up a call with Blake and his family, but said the pastor requested a lawyer be on the line during the call, which he thought was "inappropriate." 1729

Rattled by a string of explosions, which has put the city on edge for the last two weeks, a possible new explosion was reported Tuesday evening near a Goodwill store, the Austin Police Department said on its Twitter account. But after an hour of investigating, the police department said the explosion stemmed from an an incendiary device. The department said the incident was likely not connected to a previous string of explosions. One male said to be in his 30s was transported to the hospital. Their condition is serious, but the injuries are not expected to be life threatening. Tuesday incident comes just hours after a package detonated at a FedEx package handling facility in Texas. The package's intended destination is unknown.  770

Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden unveiled plans for racial economic equality on Tuesday before reporters in Delaware.Among the highlights of Biden’s plan, he says he wants to make public and historically black colleges and universities tuition free for families making less than 5,000 per year. He also said that he wants to provide student debt relief to lower income Americans. The Biden campaign released data that says that Black college graduates with a bachelor’s degree hold ,000 more student debt than white graduates. Biden also said that if elected, he would devote 0 billion for small business opportunities for those who have “been structurally excluded for generations.”“We need to make bold, practical investments to recover from the economic mess we’re in, and to rebuild for the economic future our country deserves,” Biden said in prepared remarks on Tuesday.During his news conference, he said that he plans to name a vice presidential candidate during the first week of August. Biden has previously said that he will choose a woman, and the former vice president has faced pressure from within the Democratic party to choose a woman of color. In June, Sen. Amy Klobuchar withdrew from consideration to be his running mate and urged Biden to choose a woman of color to be his running mate. 1329

President Donald Trump spent Thursday grappling with how to prevent more school massacres and address the gun debate gripping the country, offering solutions such as giving bonuses to teachers who undergo gun training."These people are cowards. They're not going to walk into a school if 20% of the teachers have guns -- it may be 10% or may be 40%. And what I'd recommend doing is the people that do carry, we give them a bonus. We give them a little bit of a bonus," Trump said. "They'll frankly feel more comfortable having the gun anyway. But you give them a little bit of a bonus."He repeated his suggestion that some teachers get trained to handle firearms as a deterrent to shooters and disparaged "gun-free zones.""I don't want teachers to have guns. I want certain highly adept people -- people that understand weaponry, guns. If they really have that aptitude -- because not everybody has aptitude for gun -- but if they have the aptitude, I think a concealed permit for having teachers and letting people know that there are people in the building with guns, you won't have -- in my opinion -- you won't have these shootings," the President said.Gun-free zones, meanwhile, are appealing to criminals, he said."We have to harden those schools, not soften them. A gun-free zone, to a killer, or somebody that wants to be a killer, that's like going in for the ice cream. That's like saying, 'Here I am, take me,' " Trump said at the White House."They see that as such a beautiful target," Trump said. "They live for gun-free zones."He also disparaged school shooting drills, saying they were tough on the kids."Active shooter drills is a very negative thing, I'll be honest with you," he said. "I think that's a very negative thing to be talking about. I don't like it. I don't want to tell my son 'you're going to have to participate in an active shooter drill. I'd much rather have a hardened school."Trump also promoted the idea of increasing the age limit of those who can purchase semi-automatic rifles from age 18 to age 21 as well as looking at the possibility of committing people like the Florida shooter to mental institutions."I said this yesterday when we had a mental institution where you take a sicko like this guy -- he was a sick guy, so many signs -- and you bring him to a mental health institution, those institutions are largely closed because communities didn't want him," Trump said. The President also blamed violence in video games and movies as partly responsible for shaping young people's thoughts."They're so violent," Trump said.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.
