It makes me focus on everything.”Others, however, say they know better than to mix cars and cannabis. “Do not smoke weed and drive,” said marijuana smoker Sam Lee. “We all know we can barely think straight instead of drive.”Now, a team of medical professionals is studying the dangers of smoking and driving.“There’s been increasing concern about the potential of public health impacts of people using cannabis while they drive or shortly after,” said Dr. Michael Kosnett of the University of Colorado Denver.Kosnett is teaming up with Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety on a study about the effects of cannabis while operating a motor vehicle.This study tests three focus groups: daily smokers, occasional smokers and non-smokers as they go through tests measuring reaction times, hand-eye coordination and short-term memory.More than a year into the study, the team has hit an unexpected road block: they can’t seem to find occasional smokers.“As for people who just used it occasionally, like on a weekly basis, that was probably less than one-fourth of the people,” Kosnett said.This study is still in process. Kosnett has not yet released the findings.Denver Police Sgt. Alan Ma, however, doesn’t need to know the results. He says he knows from working his nightly beat that driving high is dangerous.“Their perception and reaction times are delayed,” Ma said about people who drive while high on marijuana. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation that decriminalizes marijuana use throughout the state.The legislation reduces the penalty for unlawfully possessing marijuana to a violation by a fine, and removes criminal penalties for possession of any amount under two ounces. It also creates a process for people with certain marijuana convictions to have their records expunged.Cuomo said New York's former marijuana laws disproportionately affected African-American and Latino communities, and the new law will address the racial and ethnic disparities."Communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by laws governing marijuana for far too long, and today we are ending this injustice once and for all," Cuomo said. Air France confirmed on Wednesday the death of a stowaway who was discovered in the well of the landing gear after a flight from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, bound for Paris. In a statement, Air France said it was saddened by the incident and that an investigation is underway.According to BBC News, the stowaway was a child, roughly aged 10. It is unknown how the child was able to get into the landing gear. While there have been a handful of instances when a stowaway survived in the landing gear of a plane, there have been a number of recent examples of stowaways dying. A wildfire is burning out of control north of Los Angeles, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, fire officials said.The Tick fire near Santa Clarita broke out Thursday and in just a few hours has burned about 3,700 acres, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.The wind-driven blaze had only scorched a couple hundred acres when it quickly exploded to more than 3,000 acres and destroyed several structures, the fire department said.The cause was unknown.The Agua Dulce area, where the Tick Fire is burning, was part of the ongoing intentional power outages, said Lois Bruce, a spokesperson with Southern California Edison.The area was de-energized at about 8:50 am (local time) and blaze started at approximately 1:45pm, Bruce said.Wind speeds in the area are sustained at about 15 mph, with gusts of roughly 30 mph, the National Weather Service said.Mandatory evacuations were ordered for homes in the northern area of Los Angeles County and several shelters were opened.An animal protection nonprofit was scrambling to evacuate animals from their farm in Santa Clarita as a large plume of dark smoke was spotted near the property."Please support our efforts to activate our emergency plan!
