— and, in some cases, entire bodies — without families knowing about it and often gave them ashes that didn't belong to their loved ones, federal prosecutors announced on Tuesday. Megan Hess, 43, and her mother, Shirley Koch, 66, were indicted this month on nine counts of mail fraud and transportation of hazardous materials, according to court documents. They appeared before a U.S. magistrate judge in Grand Junction on Tuesday. Hess and Koch face up to 20 years in prison for each of the six counts of mail fraud and up to five years in prison for each of the three hazardous materials counts.Hess and Koch owned and operated the Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in Montrose, on Colorado's Western Slope. In dozens of alleged instances from 2010-2018, Hess and Koch sold body parts and bodies to third parties without informing families of the decedent, an indictment said. When families did agree to donate the body parts, Hess and Koch sold more than the families allowed, prosecutors said. They shipped the body parts in the mail.U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn said Hess and Koch also kept a container in their office of various ashes, which they would give to families, even if the remains weren't their loved ones."I saw statements from family members who felt guilty for this," Dunn said, "and I want them to know this is not their fault. They are the victims here. This was a fraud perpetuated on them."In February of 2018, Colorado regulators shut down the funeral home at the same time the 1488

Just after 6 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a Walmart store on Fletcher Avenue for reports of a woman trying to make a "firebomb" inside the store. Emily Stallard, 37, was opening items like flammable material, projectiles and matches inside the store that she hadn't paid for, the sheriff's office says. A security guard saw her and immediately called 911. Authorities say the guard and an off-duty Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer, who was in the store at the time, detained Stallard until deputies arrived. “This woman had all the supplies she needed to cause mass destruction at her disposal. Had it not been for an observant off-duty law enforcement officer and a watchful security staff at Walmart, she may have followed through with her plans to cause an explosion inside the store," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. The sheriff's office says Stallard had a child with her at the time. She is charged with attempted arson of a structure, fire bombing, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, child abuse and battery on a law enforcement officer."I am proud of the quick response by the officer and security personnel who stepped in and the thorough job performed by my deputies to investigate this matter and make an arrest," Chronister said. "I can't stress enough: if you see something, say something. You don't have to tackle a bad guy to be a hero. One phone call to law enforcement when you spot something or someone suspicious can ultimately save lives."This story was originally published on 1540

While the most likely scenario shows decreased activity, there is still a chance of another major earthquake striking in the next seven days.“According to our forecast, over the [next week,] there is a 4 percent chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 6.4,” the USGS said. “It is likely that there will be smaller earthquakes over the [next week,] with 40 to 230 magnitude-3 or higher aftershocks. Magnitude 3 and above are large enough to be felt near the epicenter. The number of aftershocks will drop off over time, but a large aftershock can increase the numbers again, temporarily.”The uncertainty in the ground below their feet has thousands of Puerto Ricans sleeping outside.“We don’t know if there is going to be any other quake big enough to do additional damage or bigger than what we’ve seen so far,” said Jochen Braunmiller, a seismologist and research faculty member at the University of South Florida.“I was a little surprised about the actual location of those earthquakes because they are not happening right at the plate boundary between the North American and the Caribbean plate,” Braunmiller said. “They are happening close to the island and above the plate boundary.”Braunmiller said the quakes are hitting in a deformed zone near the upper crust. If the location of the earthquake changes, it could be catastrophic for the island.“The worst-case scenario for Puerto Rico would be a subduction zone earthquake on the order of magnitude 7.5 or 8,” Braunmiller said. “I don’t think from historical data earthquakes have been much bigger than that. It would take out a lot of infrastructure for Puerto Rico for quite a while.”The USGS is continually updating their forecast 1720

— higher than that of the average flu strain. The organization also said that while the disease does not spread as quickly as the average flu, because the viral strain is so new, it still poses an issue due to lack of immunity built up in humans. The vast majority of COVD-19 cases remain in mainland China, where more than 80,000 people have been infected with the virus. South Korea (more than 6,000), Iran (more than 4,000) and Italy (more than 3,000) remain hotspots for the disease. In the U.S., at least 236 people have contracted COVID-19 — the majority on the west coast. Fourteen people have died as a result of the disease — 13 in Washington state, and one in California.According to 694

on Thursday that recent tweets and statements from President Donald Trump have made it "impossible" for him to do his job. Barr's response to questions on whether his decision to overrule DOJ prosecutors on lowering the sentencing recommendation for Trump ally Roger Stone offered some criticism of the president. Barr added that he did not have any direct conversations with the president on Stone's sentencing. “I’m not going to be bullied or influenced by anybody ... whether it’s Congress, a newspaper editorial board, or the president,” Barr told ABC News. “I’m gonna do what I think is right. And you know … I cannot do my job here at the department with a constant background commentary that undercuts me.”On Wednesday, Trump thanked Barr for his decision to step in on the Stone case. “Congratulations to Attorney General Bill Barr for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not have even been brought,” Trump 956
