SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New numbers show the trash continues to pile up at San Diego landfills.San Diego County's daily waste disposal per person increased from 5.5 pounds in 2016 to 5.6 pounds in 2017, according to the research group, Equinox Project, the nonprofit institute at University of San Diego."When the economy's booming and there's more disposable income, people tend to buy more stuff. That means more packaging, and it tends to come with more waste," said Nilmini Silva-Send, a researcher with the Equinox Project.San Diego County's disposal rate is among the highest in the state.More trash means more greenhouse gasses released and less landfill space. As for the biggest trash makers, Del Mar comes in at more than 17 pounds per person, followed by Coronado and Carlsbad. The Del Mar Fairgrounds and Naval Base Coronado are among several possible factors. "The higher the socioeconomic level, the more waste they will tend to produce," said Silva-Send. The cities tossing the least amount of trash per person are Oceanside, Chula Vista, and Imperial beach. The biggest increase for trash disposal happened in Santee, while the biggest year-to-year decreases were in Imperial Beach and National City. The waste report is part of the Equinox Project's annual Quality of Life Dashboard report, which provides a snapshot of economic and environmental trends in the region. 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly two dozen children were hurt over the weekend after a platform collapsed at a San Diego indoor parkour gym.One of the people hurt said her 10-year-old son was one of her rescuers. It was kid’s night out, so most parents dropped their kids off. Julie Blair hadn’t been to the gym, so she stayed to make sure her son Ian was safe.RELATED: Investigation underway in platform collapse at San Diego parkour gym“I love him so much, and I'm lucky to have him, and I'm glad that we're okay,” said Blair. Julie can’t seem to hold Ian enough after terror shattered a night of fun. “They were having pizza, I was talking to the other mom, and it happened so fast. All of a sudden I heard a cracking sound and we just plunged to the ground.”Police and firefighters carried one scared child after another out of the building after the platform collapsed.Parent’s received frantic phone calls and scrambled to find their children.RELATED: Teen girl has broken bones after Barrio Logan platform collapse, city continues its investigationBut it was Ian who rushed to his mom’s side. “Her head was against the wall and I thought if that falls that's going to hit her neck. So I’m like mom, get up, get up.”Ian says he then started clearing the wood and the blood-stained glass. "I said, I'm fine, I'm fine, nothing happened to me. I was more concerned with my mom instead of myself because I love her and stuff.”"He just said I didn't want you to worry about me because I knew you were so hurt,” said Blair. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the country's best spots to lay and in the sand and watch the tide roll in is right in San Diego.Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University more widely known as "Dr. Beach," has released his annual list of the best beaches in the U.S. Rounding out the top 10 at number nine is San Diego's own Coronado Beach for the second straight year.Tucked along Coronado, the beach is hailed by Leatherman as a local oasis and "toast of Southern California."RELATED: Coronado's Free Summer Shuttle service launches before Memorial Day"Coronado Beach is the toast of Southern California; it is a veritable oasis by the sea, measuring hundreds of yards wide. With its lush subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf," Leatherman writes. The Hotel del Coronado is also touted for its "Old World elegance" and appeal that it adds to the sandy shores. Coronado Beach was the only California beach to make the list. Topping the beach rankings is Kailua Beach Park in Oahu, Hawaii. So what makes Leatherman the expert? He uses 50 criteria to evaluate beaches, including water and sand quality as well as safety and management. Since 1991, the professor has graded beaches and is regarded as a coastal expert, from storm impacts and coastal erosion to beach health. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of the FBI’s 'Ten Most Wanted Fugitives' from Las Vegas may be hiding in the San Diego area, the FBI said Tuesday.Jesus Robert Munguia is accused of bludgeoning his wife to death in 2008 in Nevada. The FBI said Sherryl Sacueza left Munguia and took the couple’s four young children with her. Munguia learned his wife was romantically involved with another man and persuaded her to return home with the children, said agents.Investigators said Sacueza returned and Managua locked the children in a bedroom before driving Sacueza to a remote area, attempting to strangle her, and beating her with what may have been a tire iron.FBI public affairs agent Mollie Halpern said Munguia uses aliases including Mono, Chuy, and Miguel. Munguia has a tattoo on his chest that reads “My Baby Jessica” and a tattoo of a teardrop near his left eye. He is also missing his right index finger. The FBI also believes Munguia may be hiding in Tijuana, Mexico.Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. The agency is offering 0,000 for information leading to Munguia’s arrest. 1144
