SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was stabbed to death in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter early Wednesday morning, and police say one person was detained in connection with the incident.At around 2:30 a.m., San Diego police responded to reports of a stabbing in the 400 block of Fifth Avenue, near J Street.When officers arrived, they saw a man in his 40s with a stab wound on his chest lying on the ground with a woman trying to keep pressure on the injury.The victim was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.After the victim gave police a description of the attacker, officers spotted and then apprehended a man believed to be linked to the stabbing.ABC 10News learned the man was detained for questioning.SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said the incident is under investigation, but it appeared the stabbing took place following an exchange of words between the victim and his friends and another group of people. 940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A mountain lion cub rescued by the San Diego Humane Society continues to make great strides in its recovery.The Humane Society said the female cub was found by Vista Grande Fire Station firefighters near a road in Idyllwild on Sept. 2. The cub was “semiconscious, extremely emaciated, dehydrated, weak and had tremors,” according to the Humane Society.Under the care of the Humane Society’s Project Wildlife, the cub -- believed to be 14 weeks old -- has made significant health progress.Through daily fluid therapy, medications, and proper meals, the Humane Society said the cub has increased her weight from 10.5 pounds to 22 pounds.Christine Barton, the director of Operations & Wildlife Rehabilitation at the Humane Society’s Ramona campus, said, “With each passing day, she becomes more active and responsive and, though she still has some medical issues to overcome from being in such a fragile state, we are delighted she has responded well to our treatment and are hopeful she will make a full recovery. Mountain lions are special predators and we are proud to have an expert team trusted by the state of California to care for the species.”The Humane Society added:“Mountain lions typically stay with their mother until they disperse to live a solitary life at around 12-18 months of age. Because it is not safe to return a young mountain lion to the wild if found injured or orphaned as a kitten, Project Wildlife has been working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to monitor her progress and when stabilized, to ensure she has a good permanent home at a qualified facility.San Diego Humane Society acquired the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona on Sept. 1 from the Humane Society of the United States. San Diego (KGTV) -- A local enterprise center for at-risk teens in City Heights is doing what they can to help those struggling during the pandemic. Their weekly food distribution is serving hundreds of people.The Union of Pan Asian Communities, also known as UPAC, works with at-risk teens in the City Heights community. The organization strives to lead the teens on a successful path.“We provide all the mentorship and guidance that we can for these kids to follow the right tracks but employment is such a critical feature,” says Director Dante Dauz.In 2018, the Enterprise Center was created to help the teens gain employment and entrepreneurial skills. The center consists of the “Neighborhood Cafe,” a commercial kitchen, print shop and technology center.“They are prepared to open up their own business,” says Dauz. “They’ve been instructed from top to bottom about what licenses they need, business formation, marketing plan.”When the pandemic hit, Dauz says many people in the City Heights area were in need of food.“This community was already experiencing challenges and barriers before COVID-19 hit.”UPAC distributes 6,000 pounds of food through care boxes every Friday.“In addition to the distribution boxes our cafe also pumps out roughly 1,000 hot meals for the families.”Dauz says the teens serving the families not only get a chance to better their professional skills but also give back to the City Heights community they love.“Food for the next few days isn’t going to solve all their problems but, its definitely going to help,” says Dauz. “We take a lot of pride in being able to do that.”The organization says to ensure there is enough for everyone, they encourage people to call and reserve a donation box ahead of time. 1750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A major crash on state Route 94 in San Diego’s Webster area sent several people to the hospital and caused traffic backups early Monday morning.According to California Highway Patrol, at around 12: 10 a.m., a black sedan traveling on southbound Euclid Avenue somehow veered off the roadway, went down an embankment and onto westbound SR-94.The crash caused a chain reaction of vehicles slamming into the back of the black sedan while the driver was trapped inside.To prevent the pile-up from getting worse, witnesses sprang into action using a light to wave down the traffic.When fire crews arrived, they had to use the jaws of life to remove the driver from her car. She was taken to a hospital with major injuries.Several other drivers were also transported to a hospital with minor injuries.CHP is investigating what caused the black car to lose control and crash. 895

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of Americans filed for unemployment for the first time last week, leading to increased competition for the jobs that are available.The Labor Department reported Thursday that nearly 2.9 million workers are now seeking weekly payments from the government amid coronavirus-related closures. In San Diego County, the Workforce Partnership reports that it has received notice from 92 companies totaling roughly 12,000 workers — those notices, however, are voluntary, so the actual number could be much higher. Those workers could receive up to 0 per week from the state of California, plus an additional 0 from the federal government's stimulus package. "I'm in an industry that is vulnerable to situations like this in the future, so what do I have to do about it to guarantee that this doesn't happen to me and my family again in the future? That's my question," said Sean O'Hara, who recently lost his job as general manager of the now-closed Splash Cafe at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, which is operated by the French Gourmet. "All the restaurants are closed that I can see.
