SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old man was hospitalized Monday with non- life-threatening wounds to his leg and hand after he was shot by another man in a parking lot near Mission Bay, police said.The shooting happened around 7:10 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot in the 2600 block of Ingraham Street, north of West Mission Bay Drive, San Diego police Sgt. Kevin Gibson said.The 28-year-old man was standing alone in the parking lot when another man approached him and fired five shots, striking the victim in the leg and the hand, Gibson said.The victim was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, the sergeant said.No detailed suspect description was immediately available.One person was detained at the scene and later arrested on unrelated charges, Gibson said. The nature of those charges was not disclosed.Detectives from the San Diego Police Department's special operations unit were investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting. 1027

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Former Congressman Darrell Issa is poised to end a political retirement that started only last year when he lost his seat in a Democratic wave that turned over seven Republican-held California districts. Issa scheduled a news conference for Thursday and will announce he's seeking the seat held by fellow Republican and longtime-U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, who is running for re-election while under indictment on corruption charges, said Larry Wilske, a retired Navy SEAL and Republican also running in Hunter's San Diego-area district.In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Wilske said Issa told him he will run. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old woman who succumbed to some type of medical emergency -- possibly a drug overdose -- and became gravely ill after being arrested in University City last week died in a hospital today, authorities reported.Aleah Jenkins was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center nine days after being taken into custody, according to San Diego police.On the afternoon of Nov. 27, Jenkins was riding in a vehicle that was pulled over in the 3700 block of La Jolla Village Drive, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.After determining that she was the subject of an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for possession of methamphetamine, officers arrested Jenkins. While still at the scene of the traffic stop, Jenkins became ill and vomited."The officers called for paramedics, but (Jenkins) said she had only had an upset stomach, so medics were canceled," Dobbs said.Jenkins was then taken to downtown SDPD headquarters, where, while being processed for booking into county jail, she passed out, according to police."Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts and called for medical assistance," the lieutenant said.Paramedics took over the emergency aid and rushed Jenkins in for hospital care."During the course of the medical intervention, controlled substances were found concealed in (Jenkins') clothing," Dobbs said this afternoon."At this point, there is no indication any force was used on (her)."A cause-of-death ruling will remain on hold pending autopsy results.Police, however, believe that Jenkins may have suffered a drug overdose, according to Dobbs.The officers who conducted the traffic stop during which Jenkins was taken into custody have been identified as Nicholas Casciola and Jason Taub. Schwartz Federal Office Building in downtown San Diego will result in a 21-month closure of a portion of Front Street, beginning Saturday.According to the U.S. General Services Administration, a two-block stretch of Front Street, between Broadway and West F Street, will be affected by the construction project, which is expected to last until June 2021. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be detoured around the project area.The project will reinforce and enhance the Front Street underpass beneath the Schwartz Federal Building. The project is designed to increase safety for the building's occupants as well as pedestrians and motorists, according to the GSA.The Federal Building's existing framing at the underpass will be reinforced with new steel beams, concrete paneling and column support structures, federal officials said.Signs will be in place on Interstate 5 to alert motorists to the closure as they enter downtown. The easternmost lane of Front Street between Broadway and E Street will provide access to the underground parking garage at 101 West Broadway and for turning city buses.Construction work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. except on weekends and holidays.The roadwork will be completed first, followed by pedestrian walkways with full-height walls to separate the road from walkways, according to the GSA."One of our strategic goals is better management of federal real estate and this GSA construction project allows for that while also being a catalyst for downtown revitalization," said GSA Regional Administrator Tom Scott.
