SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting they be allowed to reopen the local economy. The board voted 4-1, with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher voting "no," to take further steps into reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. The letter requests San Diego County be permitted to reopen gyms, hotels, nail salons, wineries and breweries, churches at full capacity, theme parks, youth sports, charter and fishing boats, community pools, and museums, Supervisor Jim Desmond tweeted.Following the vote, Desmond said in a statement that it will be up to Newsom, but that most of the board believes the county is ready.RELATED: Passive recreation activities now allowed at San Diego County beaches"Just now, the Board approved a plan telling the Governor we are ready to open for business. It's ultimately up to the Governor to decide, but the message is clear from the Board of Supervisors, we are ready to open," Desmond's statement read.It wasn't immediately clear what specific limits these businesses would be required to operate under if allowed to reopen. Though, the county has released reopening criteria (available here).Fletcher said he could not support the measure to send the letter to the state because he believes "we should stay the course in opening in a safe, responsible and systematic way."RELATED: San Diego County allows churches to reopen with limits"We have had success in our re-opening because of the approach we have taken and not in spite of it. While I agree with the need to continue our safe reopening, and believe a number of additional entities are ready to open at this time I could not support the calls by my colleagues to reopen higher risk entities like churches at full capacity immediately," Fletcher wrote. "I look forward to additional progress in the coming days and weeks but do not support this reckless approach."The board also voted to immediately reopen all beach activities and requested a staff report on how COVID-19 has impacted San Diego's most vulnerable populations. As of Tuesday, San Diego County reported 7,554 coronavirus cases and 269 deaths. 2170

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sunday is expected to be the busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but it will still be light in comparison to holiday travel before the pandemic. Four million Southern Californians were expected to travel over Thanksgiving, despite warnings against travel because of the pandemic. The CDC advised people not to travel, asking them to stay home, to avoid further spread of COVID-19. Doctors worry about the effects of this weekend's travel will be seen in a few weeks from now, with a surge of cases. RELATED: Fauci: US may see 'surge upon surge' of virus in weeks aheadThroughout the weekend, the San Diego International Airport remained relatively empty, there were no long lines for pick-up or drop-off of passengers, and the lines for flight check-ins were only a few people long.If you are traveling, health officials recommend following all health guidelines currently in place, like wearing a mask at all times and social distancing. 987

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man killed in 2013 is pleading with the community for new leads as the case has now been left unsolved for more than half a decade.Ralph Green was killed on October 20, 2013.  He was murdered on Jewell Street in the Mountain View neighborhood, on the porch of his daughter’s home while at her 32nd birthday party. His daughter, Chanel Green, says the shooting happened suddenly, catching everyone by surprise.“My mother was on her way outside, so it was a blessing I didn't lose both my parents that day,” Chanel said. “I remember (my mother) shrieking, ‘oh my god, Ralph’s been shot.’ And I ran to the door to see my dad walk holding his neck.”Green says he was shot three times, once through this throat.“My brother catches him, and I moved my brother out of the way, and I laid (my father) down on the ground, and I start screaming, “oh my god, my dad’s been shot, call the police,’” she said. “My dad bled out on the floor, and all I could hope was that he heard me when I told him I loved him.” Channel’s aunt, Jennetta Pierce, was also shot.  Pierce is Ralph’s cousin-in-law.Pierce says she was inside the house, by the window, when the bullets started flying. One of them hit her on the lower back.“I got hit, but I didn’t let anyone know I got hit because my kids were there, and I just told them to get up under the table,” Pierce recalled.  After that, emergency crews came inside the house and took her to the hospital, where she spent two weeks.  She says she spent the next five years focused on moving forward.Police have said the shooting was random.  Chanel says there have been tips, and potentially leads given to the police but none have panned out.  But she’s convinced that there are people out there that know something, that can give her and her family the closure they need.“For anybody who knows somebody that knows something to come forward, now is the time, to tell the truth,” Chanel said. Anyone with information can contact San Diego Police or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Super Saturday is set to eclipse Black Friday in sheer numbers, according to the National Retail Federation. The NRF says an "estimated 147.8 million U.S. consumers [are] expected to participate, up from 134.3 million last year, according to the annual survey released today."This includes both in-store and online shopping. This year had the shortest shopping window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leaving shoppers nervous.Jessica Ramirez said she was so busy working she could only start shopping Saturday. She said the family had been to a few stores that day and she will get as much done as possible in the final countdown before Christmas.Dana Giusti was eating a candy cane while she shopped in Best Buy, saying her sugar fix was staving off anxiety about finishing up Christmas shopping and wrapping all the presents for her family. In Mission Valley, the Target parking lot was filled with lines of cars. Families had different plans of attack to tackle their lists. Some shopped online and picked up curbside, while others braved the crowds inside."NRF defines the holiday season as November 1 through December 31 and has forecast that sales will total between 7.9 and 0.7 billion. Consumers expect to spend an average ,047.83 – including purchases made earlier – for an increase of 4 percent over last year, according to an earlier NRF survey.Today’s survey of 7,779 adult consumers was conducted November 27 through December 5 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points." 1543
