AUSTIN, Texas – Inside a restaurant called “The Pita Shack,” Ayman Attar Bashi recreates part of his culture through the food served in his restaurant. “We are lucky,” he said. He and his family are lucky because a decade ago, they fled violence in Iraq, becoming refugees and resettling in Austin, Texas. “To be a refugee is not a choice,” he said. “Not a choice.” Refugees like Ayman, though, may no longer be able to count on Texas for a fresh start. Governor Greg Abbott said the state has already done more than its fair share. In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Gov. Abbott said that since 2010, “…roughly 10% of all refugees resettled in the United States have been placed in Texas.” He added that, “in addition to accepting refugees all these years, Texas has been left by Congress to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.” “There had been 41 other governors that had had come out and said, ‘yes, our state we would love to continue to accept refugees’ and that was a mix of Democrats and Republican governors, and so Gov. Abbott was the very first who had said no,” said Russell Smith, with Refugee Services of Texas, the largest resettlement agency in a state. Last year, Texas took in 2,227 refugees – the most of any state. It was followed by Washington, with 1,930 and California with 1,802. Overall, America is admitting fewer refugees. Back in 2016, President Barack Obama set a limit of 110,000 for the 2017 fiscal year. This year, President Donald Trump is setting a limit of 18,000. Though a judge put a temporary stop to the Texas plan, the potential for refugees to be rejected looms large here. “Every action has negatively affected resettlement at the same time,” Smith said. Whether the plan eventually goes through – or gets permanently rejected by the courts – remains to be seen. Back at his restaurant, Ayman says he and his family feel safe and welcomed in Austin. “You’re an active element in this community because we’re hiring people, we are providing people with good food, spread our culture – at the end of the day, you feel like you are doing a lot of good things in this community,” he said.The Trump administration has not said yet whether it will seek to appeal the federal judge’s decision, which stopped Texas from refusing refugees. 2356

Four kids were removed from a Phoenix home after one child died, and the other children were found with "insects crawling out of their ears." Phoenix police report that on January 7, they responded to a home for an unresponsive child. Phoenix Fire Department paramedics pronounced the 1-month-old boy dead at the scene around 11 p.m. Police say there were a total of five children in the home at the time, two 1-month-olds, a 1-year-old, 4-year-old, and 6-year-old. While police were there, the other 1-month-old child began to have trouble breathing. The child was taken to the hospital where it was found to have "traumatic head injuries," and a brain bleed. The Department of Child Safety removed the other three children from the home. During their evaluation, the other children were found "to have a lice infestation, covered in dirt, extremely soiled diapers, and insects crawling out of their ears." The 1-year-old was also found to have multiple skull fractures. The 4-year-old child later reportedly told investigators that "Dada," 38-year-old Donald Roy Ferguson, threw the baby, who later died, to the ground. An autopsy report did not find any deadly traumatic injuries, but additional medical tests are being done. During their investigation, police say Ferguson was watching the children while their mother, 29-year-old Emmaline Amelia Ramirez, was out getting baby items. Ferguson called her to return home when the baby was choking. Ramirez allegedly returned home and gave the child CPR, and reported he was fine, according to Ferguson. She then ate and went to bed. Around 10:30 p.m., the child stopped breathing again, and Ramirez performed CPR and called 911. Ferguson later admitted to becoming angry and hitting Ramirez, according to court records. Ramirez also allegedly told police that when Ferguson hits her, the children cry and hide under the bed. Doctors are seeing more children with an illness that can look a lot like the flu or cold. It's known as RSV. It stands for respiratory syncytial virus. It comes with the typical runny nose, cough and congestion we see in the wintertime. Adults can usually get over RSV without a problem. But it can be a lot more severe for young children.“From a newborn to a 3- or 4-year-aged child, and they go to a daycare or they're exposed to other kids who have a runny nose, cough or congestion. These kids can fall sicker much more, and will have more respiratory distress and dehydration than kids who are older,” says Dr. Purva Grover with Cleveland Clinic. Respiratory distress and dehydration are what makes RSV different from the typical cold. Doctors say some of the signs include shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Parents may be able to tell this is happening in a child if they're heavily breathing from both their nose and chest, as well as grunting noises. It's important that families see a doctor before this becomes respiratory failure. There isn't a vaccine specifically for RSV. But some doctors say they've been able to treat it with other vaccines. “There is a vaccine which is actually an antibody treatment that we give to the most vulnerable premature infants, those that are in their first year of life and were born very prematurely,” says Dr. James Gaensbauer, a pediatrics and infectious disease specialist at Denver Health. “But it's not an ideal thing, you have to give a shot every month for every five months that is typically the season.” Doctors can also do other things to treat the symptoms, like giving kids extra oxygen.RSV usually lasts about two weeks. 1707
