SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans have every opportunity to get moving as the new year gets underway.America's Finest City was recently ranked by financial website WalletHub as the ninth most active city in the U.S. The study examined 100 cities around the country, comparing them on metrics including the presence of fitness centers and sports facilities, costs of fitness memberships, trail availability, and share of inactive adults. The metrics were then organized under either "budget and participation" and "sports and outdoors."San Diego ranked first in fitness centers and sports centers per capita, seventh in baseball and softball diamonds per capita, 22nd in basketball hoops per capita, 16th in parkland acres per capita, and 30th in walking. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego gun owners could soon face more requirements when it comes to storing their firearms.City Attorney Mara Elliott announced the proposal Tuesday. It would require gun owners to store their guns in a Department of Justice approved lockbox or trigger lock, unless the owner or authorized user is carrying the firearm or it is in their immediate control. Elliott said state law requires locks to accompany guns sold in California but does not always require their use. "Safe storage laws work when it comes to protecting our kids," said Elliott, who made the announcement next to a playground at Mission Bay. Elliott pointed to the 2013 death of 10-year-old Eric Klyaz, who was fatally shot when playing with a gun in a friend's garage. "Two families were torn apart that day, but the impact of his death cut deeper than that," Elliott said. Violators would face up to six months in jail and a ,000 fine. Elliott said police wouldn't be doing door-to-door checks, but could cite someone when responding to a different call.Still, Michael Schwartz, who heads the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC, said law is duplicative and that education is the better approach. "This is something that invades someone's choice in their home," he said. "Whether or not you have a child, maybe you're a single woman who lives at home, and now she's taking away a number of choices that a single woman has to be able to defend herself in her own home."The proposed ordinance says it will not substantially burden a person's ability for self-defense at home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County sheriff's deputies fished a man out of the ocean in Del Mar who they say rammed a Border Patrol truck at the end of a dangerous chase.According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's North Coastal Station, it all started when deputies tried to pull the man over in a blue Smart car driving with no lights or a license plate.The driver failed to stop and took out a road sign then drove the wrong way down Coast Boulevard in Del Mar around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.A few minutes later, the man crashed into a Border Patrol truck at the dead-end of 15th Street. No one was inside the truck at the time.Border Patrol agents spotted the driver running towards the beach.The man jumped over the bluffs' edge and plunged naked into the water, where he spent two hours in the surf.He was taken into custody after he was fished out of the ocean by a Border Patrol boat around 4:15 a.m.Deputies are currently attempting to identify the suspect. 982

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans will soon have four new restaurants for dining along the San Diego Bay, as Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined Port of San Diego officials and The Brigantine Inc. for the ribbon cutting ceremony Monday for Portside Pier. Portside Pier is an over-the-water dining complex that has been years in the making. It will have four restaurants -- Brigantine on the Bay, Miguel's Cocina, Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Coffee & Gelato. The dining complex replaced Anthony's Fish Grotto, a staple for 52 years along the bay. The dining complex is now owned by The Brigantine Inc. The restaurants are opening amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The design of the restaurants have plenty of outdoor space to seat about 500 people, with all social distancing guidelines in place. The complex has capacity for about 1,000 people, once pandemic restrictions are lifted. Portside Pier is the first of several projects along the waterfront, to improve and update the embarcadero. The coffee and gelato bar are already open. The other restaurants officially open on July 28. 1090
