It’s been nearly four decades since a Northern Ireland-based start-up car company put a futuristic take on the sports car. With its low profile, sleek, stainless steel body and unmistakable gull-wing doors, DeLorean’s DMC-12 remains one of the most recognizable cars on the planet. “You're going down the road and people are just hanging out their windows taking pictures and videotaping,” explains DMC-12 owner Robert Keslar.Keslar bought his second DeLorean with severe engine damage eight years ago.“There was some fiberglass damage from the fire that occurred,” he said. “So, I did all that myself and then I brought it up here to the shop and they finished it up for me and got it back on the road.”Only one model, in one color, was ever released before the company shutdown production in 1982. Its founder John DeLorean was in legal hot water and the original company was left insolvent.“It was a perfect storm,” said current DeLorean Motor Company Vice President James Espey. “A bad economy, high interest rates and a bad exchange rate on the pound to the dollar.”With just over 9,000 produced, an estimated 6500 remain on the road today. But it was 1985’s "Back to the Future" that electrified audiences, cementing the DeLorean’s place in American pop culture. In the film, an incredulous Marty McFly played by Michael J. Fox asks the question: “You built a time machine out of a DeLorean?”Doc Brown played by Christopher Lloyd responds with this: “The way I look at it, if you’re going to build a time machine you ought to do it with some style.”It’s that style and original design that’s been frozen in time. And the re-imagined DeLorean Motor Company remains on its quest to bring the iconic luxury car into the future. “We still have people who don't know that the company is still in existence,” says Espey. DMC is now headquartered just outside of Houston in Humble, Texas. They specialize in the service and restoration of DeLorean cars. They even hope to one day produce new ones.“When the Delorean factory closed in late ‘82, all the remaining parts got shipped here to the United States,” according to Espey.Their warehouse, now a time-capsule, is lined with original parts manufactured nearly 40 years ago. “About three and a half million altogether,” says Espey. “Nuts Bolts Washers glass interior trim switches stainless steel panels pretty much everything to make a car.”That’s enough parts, potentially to build another 500 cars. But DMC says new production is on hold for now. They are waiting for final federal regulations for a law passed in 2015 that would allow them to produce a low volume of vintage cars that would be exempt from today’s emission standards. “In a perfect world that would lead to an all new DeLorean at some point in the future," says Espey.Fortunately, enthusiasts like Keslar don’t have to wait for the future. “The doors the finish the stainless steel there's just nothing else like it,” says Keslar with a smile. “It’s an absolute blast.”A blast from the past. 3024

Jackie Wilkinson recently picked up an unknown call at her home. Her cable company was showing on her caller ID, so Wilkinson did what she normally doesn't do with unexpected calls: she answered. "It appeared that Spectrum was calling, our provider for internet, phone and cable services, so I answered, " Wilkinson said.Other customers report receiving similar calls that show up as Cox, Comcast, Xfinity, Charter, Optimum, and others. The caller immediately offered to help lower her bill, so Wilkinson perked up."He asked, 'Do you want to save money?" Wilkinson said. "Naturally, in this day and age, who doesn't want to save money? So I said yes, and he said, 'Great, now tell me how much you are paying.'"But that last comment from the phone rep raised a red flag."These are questions I would think Spectrum would already know," she said. "They can see your billing price right there!"Who was really calling? When the caller then told her she could save money by signing up for a satellite TV service instead, Wilkinson realized it wasn't really Spectrum Cable on the line.Instead, it was a case of "spoofing," where a fake number shows on your caller ID.Scammers have been spoofing the numbers of the FBI and IRS for several years now and getting people to answer the phone that way. It was only natural they'd start pretending to be your cable company. We contacted Spectrum, and the company said it has other complaints about these calls. It recently sent out a warning to customers saying: "If an offer doesn't sound right, customers may ask the representative on the phone to validate they are an employee by looking up their account number. Spectrum representatives will always have an account number." Then call your company (at their customer service number on your bill) and ask if there is any such person working there.Wilkinson just wants to warn others."If you see your cable company calling, you think its important," Wilkinson said. "The phone number appears on your phone as if they are the cable company, so everything seemed legitimate up until the questions." But cable providers never call you to chat about lowering your bill or offering a discount. These callers are either overly-aggressive sales people for competing services (such as various satellite TV firms), or are outright scammers trying to get your account number or credit card number.Never give personal information to someone who calls you, so you don't waste your money.___________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. Kentucky Democrat Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot who rose to national prominence last year in her failed campaign for Congress against Republican Andy Barr, is turning her sights on a new target: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In a three-minute video released Tuesday, McGrath said McConnell has "bit by bit, year by year, turned Washington into something we all despise.""I'm running for Senate because it shouldn't be like this," McGrath added.McGrath's candidacy marks a significant recruiting coup for Democrats. She emerged as an unlikely fundraising juggernaut in her congressional race, bringing in millions of dollars after her campaign released a biographical video that went viral, and becoming a Democratic celebrity in the process. But it was not enough for McGrath to best Barr, who won by about 3 points in the 2018 election. In the race against McConnell, McGrath appears poised to run as a moderate seeking to break the partisan gridlock in Washington. In an interview Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," McGrath said she had watched the Democratic presidential debate and was concerned that many candidates were positioning themselves too far to the left. 1193

It's been over four months since Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle, but driving around some parts of Panama City, many would think it had just been four days since the storm made landfall. Especially if you saw Shelly Summers' backyard, which is now a tent community of 24 displaced strangers. “And we have more coming,” says Summers. Summers has been helping those whose homes were destroyed. "That's just what you're supposed to do,” she says. “How can you go home and shut your door and know that there are people sleeping in the woods? How can you be OK with that? That's not right." The tents have power, heat and even mattresses. Summers and her husband even built an extra shower. Summers and her husband won’t accept payment. “She won’t take it!” says one tent occupant Brittany Pitts. Instead, residents have found small ways to show their gratitude, like carving a fairy house into what was Summers’ favorite tree before the storm. But Pitts still can't help but think that no one should be living like this, especially this long after the storm. She feels the rest of the country has forgotten the victims of Hurricane Michael."You really see just how much people don't care,” Pitts says. Summers agrees, "I feel like the day after, we were forgotten about. It doesn't make me mad. It makes me sad, because that's not how it should be." TJ Dargan with FEMA’s Hurricane Michael Response Team says if residents feel forgotten, it’s through no fault of FEMA, which to date has contributed 6 million in rental assistance. “Well, FEMA is certainly focused here,” Dargan says. “We have a lot of people, and we're pouring a lot of money into this community. So no, FEMA certainly hasn't forgotten about this. The federal government hasn't forgotten about this.” But the fact that Congress has yet to fund any emergency relief for Hurricane Michael frustrates local residents, as well as local politicians.Until there’s more help, Summers believes the tents in her backyard will be her new normal for years to come, but it’s a challenge she says she'll gladly accept. 2108

It will only have been six days from when the remaining top Democratic presidential candidates met in Nevada, but there is plenty at stake in Tuesday’s debate. The debate marks the final time the candidates will be on the same stage before next week’s Super Tuesday, when nearly one-third of all delegates will be decided. Tuesday’s debate is also coming off the most-watched Democratic debate in any nominating contest. Will even more Americans watch on Tuesday before making their final decision? Before Super Tuesday comes a very important South Carolina Primary this Saturday, where former Vice President Joe Biden is in desperate need of a good performance. When: Tuesday, Feb. 24, 8-10:15 p.m. ETHow to watch: CBS, CBSNews.comThe candidatesFormer Vice President Joe BidenFormer New York City Mayor Michael BloombergFormer South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete ButtigiegMinnesota Sen. Amy KlobucharVermont Sen. Bernie SandersBusinessman Tom SteyerMassachusetts Sen. Elizabeth WarrenQualificationsCandidates earned at least 10% support in four national polls, or 12 percent in three South Carolina polls, or have at least one national delegate pledged from the Iowa, New Hampshire or Nevada primaries.Tuesday’s debate marks the second debate that has lifted the requirement to meet fundraising thresholds. This is what allowed Bloomberg and Steyer to enter the debate.Steyer was left off the debate stage last week, but his strong polling in the South Carolina primary has put him back onto the debate stage. Who isn’t on the stageOnly one Democrat still in the race, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who last participated in a debate in October, will be left off the stage. Coming out of NevadaSanders earned a huge win in Nevada on Saturday, claiming 24 out of 36 national delegates. Nevada has placed Sanders as the clear frontrunner going into Saturday’s race in South Carolina. It also stopped the momentum of former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who had been leading Sanders in the national delegate count. Buttigieg only earned three delegates on Saturday. South Carolina comes firstThe South Carolina primary on Saturday is one of the upmost importance to Biden. His fledgling campaign struggled in the Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire Primaries. While he managed to finish second in Nevada, he only claimed nine of the 36 delegates up for grabs. But South Carolina could be where Biden either regains his momentum, or where his campaign dies. South Carolina is the largest state so far to have a nominating race (56 delegates). It is also a state where Biden still holds a lead over Sanders and the field, although Biden now holds a more narrow lead in the polls.A NBC News poll shows Biden leading Sanders 27-23, while a CBS News poll has Biden up 28-23. While Biden will likely not catch Sanders on Saturday, it could give him much-needed momentum going into the most important day of the race. Then comes Super TuesdayNext week marks the biggest night on the calendar. As voters in 14 states (and American Samoa) go to the polls next Tuesday, 1,334 delegates will be at stake. Among the top prizes for next week’s race will be California (415 delegates) and Texas (228 delegates). A KGTV poll had Sanders leading the state with 25%, with Bloomberg at 21% and Biden at 15%. In Texas, a University of Houston Poll had Sanders and Biden tied with 20% of the vote. Bloomberg flat in first debateBloomberg participated in his first debate of the cycle, and his own campaign staff agreed the candidate had a slow start in the debate. The early minutes of the debate featured attacks from other candidates on his handling of “Stop and Frisk” as well as sexual harassment claims. Warren in particular took Bloomberg to task for not allowing employees bound by non-disclosure agreements to speak out. Last Friday, Bloomberg announced he would allow several women to exit from their NDAs if requested. It is hard to gauge how much last week’s debate will impact his numbers, and the fact he’ll have another debate before Super Tuesday gives him an opportunity to negate some of the damage. Eyes on SandersWith Sanders now clearly the frontrunner, Democrats may shift their focus and attacks on Sanders. They could have some fodder, too. On Sunday, Sanders said on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that "it's unfair to simply say everything is bad" about former Cuban President Fidel Castro’s reign over Cuba. Those comments drew some criticism from one of Biden’s advisers. There is also the issue of electability, one that has become more of a focus as Sanders climbs the poll while maintaining a liberal stance on the issues. The candidates could also be looking to slow down Sanders enough to make it challenging for him to reach 1,990 delegates before July's Democratic National Convention. A failure to earn 1,990 delegates before the convention forces a second round of voting, and allows hundreds of Democratic Party leaders a chance to be involved in the nomination. 4957
