SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Congressional candidate for the 53rd District and San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez says she was unaware of an error on her 2017 tax return and says it was committed by her accountant.Gómez's 2017 tax return shows she reported almost ,000 from pension income but reported zero in actual wages. According to Transparent California, Gómez made more than ,000 that year from her job as a San Diego City Council member and an additional ,000.University of San Diego professor of law Ariel Jurow Kleiman specializes in federal tax law. ABC 10News reporter Adam Racusin asked her to look at the filing."There was a zero on the line where you would normally report your wages," Kleiman said.Discrepancies in Gómez's tax returns were first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.The numbers on Gómez's 2018 return also don't match the dollar amounts reported on a financial disclosure report for Congressional candidates.In a statement, Gómez says her accountant made the errors, but that she has filed a corrected return and paid back the taxes."You may have seen a story about my accountant’s errors on my taxes. Like most people, I trusted my accountant to file my taxes accurately and I was shocked to find out that my 2017 returns were not properly filed. My accountant has taken responsibility for the errors. But I, too, take responsibility and I’ve filed a corrected return and paid the back taxes," Gómez said in a statement.Currently, Gómez is facing off with fellow Democrat Sara Jacobs for California's 53rd District in Congress this November.The Gómez campaign team has been sending out emails pushing for Jacobs to release her returns.A spokesperson for Jacobs told ABC 10News, "The Gómez campaign spent weeks misleading voters and crying wolf about Sara's tax returns, only to have the real story be their candidate's own negligence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Authorities are looking for an inmate who walked away from a San Diego rehabilitation facility.Steven Vargas, 53, was last seen at 10 a.m. Tuesday after leaving the San Diego's Male Community Reentry Program, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Vargas had been given permission to leave the facility but didn't return when required.The facility allows eligible offenders with one year left to serve to do so in re-entry centers, providing them with rehabilitation services that assist them with substance use disorders, mental health care, employment, education, housing, and more. Officials said they were alerted that Vargas' electronic monitoring device had been tampered with just before noon Tuesday.Vargas was sentenced to four years in prison on May 6, 2019 for vehicle theft with prior vehicle related theft convictions and grand theft of a firearm. He was scheduled to be released on parole in June.Vargas is described as a Hispanic male, 6-feet tall, and weighs about 192 pounds. He was last seen wearing faded black jeans, black shoes, a blue shirt, and a charcoal grey sweater. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Come February, SeaWorld San Diego is hoping to fill the night sky over Mission Bay with the lights of a drone show.The California Coastal Commission began considering their proposal for a test run at a hearing near San Francisco Thursday.For decades, fireworks capped off a day of summer fun at SeaWorld. A few years ago - amid ongoing concerns over impacts on wildlife, water quality and pets - SeaWorld scaled back the shows, in favor of laser light shows. Now comes another high-flying option in the form of the drone light shows like those that have wowed at places like Universal Studios and Disney World. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ask anyone, and they'll probably tell you they're going through "COVID Fatigue."It's a thing. In fact, UC Davis Health defines it in a study as tired of being cooped up, tired of being careful, and scared. But what if we told you we could end this pandemic in just five weeks? An MIT-trained physicist claims he has a theory that can do just that."I am a physicist and complexity scientist, and I've been working on pandemics for 15 years," said Dr. Yaneer Bar-Yam from his Massachusetts home.Dr. Bar-Yam is president of the New England Complex Systems Institute. He's a data scientist who studies pandemics and is an expert in controlling infectious diseases. His recommendations were partly responsible for stopping Ebola in 2014, and he claims his complex theory could do the same to stop COVID-19 before a vaccine arrives."The crazy thing is we're always just about five weeks away from getting rid of this disease," said Dr. Bar-Yam.Sounds promising, but his theory takes discipline."What we really need to do is implement a set of very strong actions," added Dr. Bar-Yam.Those actions are on his website EndCoronavirus.org. There are nine specific measures to crush COVID-19 in just five weeks and fully reopen our economy, our schools, and our lives."The most important thing locally is staying away from other people because the way the disease transmits is by breathing the same air or touching the same surfaces," said Dr. Bar-Yam.One of those measures is a lockdown. But not what you might envision, by being cooped up and unable to leave your house. Dr. Bar-Yam uses a theory called Green Zones, something we could even do at the county level. The goal is to go from neighborhood to neighborhood, on a micro-community level, getting coronavirus cases down to zero."You don't want to travel to other neighborhoods or other areas because that's how you transmit the disease from area to area," said Dr. Bar-Yam.The first two weeks are used to isolate cases and stop transmission for 14 consecutive days. If you're not in a green zone, you can't travel outside your neighborhood. Then, the next two to three weeks are used to effectively test, trace, and isolate anyone capable of transmitting the virus until your community is down to zero cases. Dr. Bar-Yam describes what we're doing now as fighting a house fire by attacking the fire in only one room."That's right, it's all over the place, and we're constantly trying to deal with it. And we have to take super aggressive actions if the fire is burning all of the time," he said.If you don't think it can work, know this: his method was practiced in Ireland, Iceland, and numerous other countries, including New Zealand, where less than five cases a day have been reported since May 3. And yes, it even worked for the most part in China with it's 1.4 billion people. But here's the catch: one of the nine measures to crush COVID is "getting everyone on board." As we've seen recently in Ocean Beach or the religious gathering in Cardiff with people packed together without masks, that's a hard thing to do."Everyone has to say, 'Yes, we're going to do this together. And it's our responsibility,'" said Dr. Bar-Yam. "You can't wait for the government. You can't wait for the mayor, or the county, or the state. It has to be a community decision to do this." 3348
